Thanks!** *(in Photo Questions)* A: The wood is Red Birch with a natural finish. The island is painted paint grade maple. **Q: How to find a Kitchen Designer?** *(in Kitchens)* I want to start the process now in hopes that we will be able to start our kitchen remodel this summer. I am assuming finding a great CKD is the first step? What is the usual process for selecting a kitchen designer - do they come to the house to interview, give general layout ideas? What questions should I be asking? My goal is not so much to find help on finishes I want someone who can figure out a great layout for us (we're combining our kitchen and dining rooms and removing the stove wall), who can measure the space, produce renderings and hopefully think of things we haven't. I have never done this before and would like to be as prepared as possible so thanks in advance for any insight! A: I worked for a kitchen dealer for twelve years and just recently went independent. I feel that there is a place for a designer to learn what you would like in a new kitchen, attain the dimensions, and crank out a suggested layout without any bias to buy cabinets from any particular place. This person could also guide you on appliance and countertop suggestions without you feeling pressured to buy what they carry. I also have seen general contractors get comfortable with one source and tend to migrate to "one fits all". Whatever you do, keep in mind it's your kitchen, your cooking style, your needs and desires and the designed layout should address those factors and not just what happens to be offered from any particular cabinet seller from Home Depot to the fancy boutique. You are are the right track by simply getting on this site and placing your question. Best wishes. **Q: Bathroom vanity light- over just vanity, or centered on wall between v** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi! Should we do a traditional 3 light/24" vanity light over the 48" vanity, or could we do a light centered on the wall, that spreads over both toilet and vanity? (See second picture, obviously our vanity is bigger.) A: I'm glad you provided this example with the multi light fixture. Note the shadows. There should be direct balanced lighting to the subject in front of the mirror. Otherwise the shadowing effect may be distracting. Perhaps a ceiling canned spot light in front of the toilet, and then balanced light or lighting for the vanity. **Q: Love the tile! Where can I get this?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: The brand is "Island Stone". It is of their "Linear Series" of glass tiles. "Seagrass" is the chosen color for this client. **Q: Need help picking a range hood** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are remodeling our kitchen and have chosen to go with dark stained cherry wood cabinets (Schuler Cherry Ginger Snap). We have ordered a 36" Wolf range and want a wood range hood but I can't decide on whether to do a tapered hood or a traditional box hood. To complicate matters, we are putting the microwave in the wall cabinet to the left of the hood. If we go with the box hood, the side cabinet can be a couple inches wider to accommodate a mid-range microwave. (We experimented with putting the microwave in the island, but DH and I are too tall and have too many back problems to mention, so would rather have the micro at shoulder height.) I've attached some of the design photos -- please help! What are your thoughts for the best look? A: I might be opening another tangent to your discussion but I will say "Tapered" if you scribe the top molding to the ceiling. The drawing of the "Square" option shows top molding not scribing to the ceiling and maybe some like that but I think it's undesirable to cap with crown molding just a couple inches from your ceiling. What should be the priority to change if we want a brighter, happier, less dated kitchen? Working on a limited budget, any tricks appreciated. I know it needs new hardware....give me a FULL vision!! A: Just a note about painting if you are considering that. I noticed a couple references on using a pro and I definitely agree since your cabinets are oak. Oak's coarse and open grain is not as tight grained like the typical painted wood - maple. Oak's grain could easily show through the painted surface. A pro will do a lot of surface prep before dipping the brush into the paint. You probably have at least $3k of what looks like quartz for your countertop so don't waste that. Wait until you have made all other changes before changing the backsplash. It just might work if you are painting the cabinets --- *Source: Houzz professional profile.
