"Learning from the past does not mean living in the past".

Evens Architects is committed to the idea that architecture inspired by classic traditions, whether the sources are Spanish, Italian, French or even Moroccan, is uniquely well suited to the climate, landscape, and culture of contemporary California. We are adept at the interpretation of classical design languages that reflect the tastes of our clients and the particulars of their locale. Whatever the style, these traditional archetypes need not be nostalgic or retrograde.

We are fascinated with exploring with our clients how these grand traditions can say something important about how we live…today.

Our design philosophy is predicated on deep, meaningful connections between the house and the land. Southern California is blessed with a nurturing environment that provides extraordinary opportunities for true indoor-outdoor living. The homes we design fulfill that promise with beauty and joy.

Stone, stucco, and terra cotta become elements of a nuanced design language we use to articulate the stories of our clients’ lives and ambitions. The complexity and individuality of those stories supersedes questions of style and taste. Far beyond dry exercises in Spanish Colonial or Mediterranean Revival, our ambition is to create highly personal, one-of-a-kind homes that enrich the lives of the people who occupy them.

Architecture is our vehicle to celebrate lives well lived.

**★★★★★ — 8932helmsplace, July 2014**

> I have worked with this company in two different projects and they are outstanding! They are very professional and just a pleasure to work with.

**★★★★★ — Michael G Imber, Architects, April 2014**

> One of the nation's most repeated residential architects, Evens Architects continue to surprise me with their creative solutions. Masters of detail and form, marrying modern to a traditional style we can all live with. They deserve the Houzz "Best of 2014" - A firm well worth following!

**★★★★★ — calibadger, March 2014**

> wonderful would just be a starting point. erik and kaa gave us plans for a home that we plan on spending the rest of our lives in. they asked how we live, what we do, how we move around. they showed us examples of homes and details in many styles. asked what we liked and what we didn't. from there they began to design our house from the ground up. no pre-conceived designs or notions about what the home should be. from several basic designs they created for us, we quickly chose one and moved on toward developing the details. erik is wonderful with these details, particularly in the classic italian/mediterranean style we chose. wonderful ideas and input. always responsive to our needs and suggestions, no matter how small. we don't have a home yet (we have an immaculate foundation), but there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that it will be unique, beautiful and our dream home.

**★★★★★ — Taylor Borsari Inc., March 2014**

> Erik and his team designed a beautiful Spanish Colonial for us from top to bottom. They were extremely tuned into our vision and their ability to listen, process and execute is beyond compare.

**★★★★★ — Quantum Windows & Doors, Oct. 2013**

> It has been a great compliment and testimony to grandeur to be specified for projects such as those designed by Erik Evens. Evens Architects captures the historical beauty specific to Mediterranean Architecture, and we at Quantum delight in our contribution that goal. The discerning Southern California homeowner can place their trust in Erik to create for them not just a home, but a masterpiece.

- [Dume Drive Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/dume-drive-residence-pj-vj~733002)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 12
 - Description: Situated on its site to embrace panoramic views of Santa Monica Bay to the south, the living spaces of this family home engage the landscape in a way that encourages daily living in the out-of-doors. Living and dining as fresco is a grand tradition in Mediterranean climes around the world, and is an important element of the lifestyle of coastal Southern California. In this home, the focus of the main level is the loggia, a protected outdoor living space that is the center of family life. This wa…
- [Carmel Valley Estate](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/carmel-valley-estate-pj-vj~197941)
 - Location: Carmel, CA
 - Photos: 24
 - Description: When we first visited our client's property, a gently rolling, eight-acre parcel in Carmel Valley, we were inspired by its pastoral beauty. Dotted with stately oaks, and nestled against a backdrop of verdant mountainside, the site and the locale reminded us of the hills of rural Tuscany. Thus the vision for the design was born. Inspiration was drawn from Badia a Coltibuono, a 15th Century Benedictine abbey northeast of Siena, which rises solemnly against the foothills of the Chianti Mountains. A…
- [35th and The Strand](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/35th-and-the-strand-pj-vj~253976)
 - Location: Manhattan Beach, CA
 - Photos: 8
 - Description: Our clients were in search of a confident vision for their family retreat on the Strand in Manhattan Beach, and we helped them find it in the great tradition of American seaside shingled architecture. This residence emerges clearly from that lineage of finely detailed, exuberant coastal houses of the American Northeast, yet the language of the architecture here has been fine-tuned for the California climate and lifestyle. There is something about the character and image of this great style that…
- [Santa Monica Beach House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/santa-monica-beach-house-pj-vj~314789)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 14
 - Description: Located in a compact historic district immediately adjacent to the beach in west Santa Monica, this charming cottage is typical of the original houses in this seaside neighborhood. Built about 1903 as a weekend retreat on the sparsely-developed coastline, the house originally sat on the windswept sand dunes of what was a remote and rustic locale at the time. Access to the cottages of the area were by boardwalks laid on the sand, or by automobile for those brave enough to venture into the dunes b…
- [Marlboro Road](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/marlboro-road-pj-vj~1099529)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 20
 - Description: A thorough immersion into the lifestyle of our clients, and a careful study of locale and site resulted in a residence thoughtfully connected to the rich tradition of the California Spanish Colonial Revival. Articulately speaking the language of that great tradition is paramount for a project such as this one, and every effort was made to carefully connect this residence to the design lineage that can be traced back to Montecito of the 1920's. Saying a person looks old rarely qualifies as a comp…
- [Emerald Bay](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/emerald-bay-pj-vj~197982)
 - Location: Laguna Beach, CA
 - Photos: 12
 - Description: Taking inspiration from the coastal regions along both the Mediterranean and Mexican Riviera, the home gently cascades down the hillside to the beach below. Blessed with a temperate climate, abundant sunlight and breathtaking vistas, this design minimizes the barriers between the inside and the outside allowing nature to become part of the interior landscape. Outdoor rooms and terraces promote the flow of space and experience of light, view, air, etc. Many rooms have three exterior walls invitin…
- [John Street](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/john-street-pj-vj~197989)
 - Location: Manhattan Beach, CA
 - Photos: 8
 - Description: Located on a hilltop in coastal Manhattan Beach, this Spanish Revival estate synthesizes a rich Southern California architectural legacy with a contemporary lifestyle. Our approach was clear and simple: envision an estate that was honest to its context, embodies the heart of an immediate family, and becomes a home for extended family members and friends alike. Through a traditional courtyard site plan, we were able to achieve this vision by embracing the inherent complexity of our clients' progr…
- [Mi Sueño](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mi-sueno-pj-vj~198017)
 - Location: Pasadena, CA
 - Photos: 10
 - Description: The house known as "Mi Sueño", or "My Dream", was once the grand dame of the Pasadena Arroyo. Mi Sueño was a masterful re-interpretation of Spanish Baroque and Spanish Colonial architecture, conceived by famed architect Bertram Goodhue while he was the lead designer for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, located in San Diego's Balboa Park. The Panama-California Exposition's style was widely published, seen by many, and highly influential in California and all of the Southwest, and led to the…
- [San Onofre Drive](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/san-onofre-drive-pj-vj~198030)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 10
 - Description: First, there was the perfect setting, a remarkable location high in the hills of Pacific Palisades with sweeping views from downtown Los Angeles to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The owners, after raising a large family, wanted to construct a special place just for them. Having learned much from building several previous homes, they knew that they wanted something smaller and tailor-made in this exciting new phase of their lives. Their pursuit resulted in a residence that not only responded to its…

## Community Q&A

**Q: House Tour** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love this home and gardens, and pool. Just awesome!

A: Thank you!

**Q: Can I use your image in my blog page? Thanks** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Would you please send me the URL of your blog?

**Q: Image Request** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi there,
We love this picture of nickel gap planking. We are creating a brochure for Nickel Gap Planking and trim boards. Would it be possible to buy the rights to use this image for commercial use? Do you have other interior images that feature nickel gap planking? We are definitely interested in purchasing the rights to use the images commercially. Thanks in advance for your response.

A: We have no problem with you using the photo, as long as we are cited as the architect.

The photographer is Manolo Langis - langismanolo@yahoo.com . You will want to check in with him to see if there is a reuse fee.

**Q: Love the splash back tiles and colour, where are they from please?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thanks! The tile is from Heath Ceramics. I can't remember right now what the color is, but if you look through the older questions here on Houzz, I'm sure you will find the answer - we've had this question many times.

**Q: What type of stone is used on the exterior?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The stone on this project is a thick veneer (6"). The pattern is what we call a random ashlar, which means that the stones are rectangular, but there are no horizontal courses - the size of the stones are randomized.

**Q: Mirrors** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi, I'm curious if you framed one mirror or two? Is there a photo that shows the mirrors? I would love to see the full effect with the wall woodwork.

A: It's one mirror.
