## About

### Houzz Badges

- Houzz Influencer
- 500,000 Ideabook Saves

Studio McGee was created in a spare bedroom with lots of big ideas and no room for fabric samples. After many late nights of brainstorming and collaboration, husband and wife team, Syd and Shea McGee decided to take what was a small business for a stay-at-home mom and turn it into something much more.

After graduating with a degree in Public Relations, Shea realized that what she really wanted to do was design. A few semesters into design school, her bright and clean aesthetic had attracted a waiting list of clients and no idea how to handle the workload.

Meanwhile, Syd had worked for six years to build a start-up digital marketing firm that was acquired and left him searching for a new start-up to dive into. He soon realized there was the perfect candidate right in front of him.

Their team’s work has garnered attention in the design world from House Beautiful, Domaine Home, Design\*Sponge, Apartment Therapy, SMP Living, and One King’s Lane to name a few.

> Based on the positive experiences of my friends , I hired & worked with Studio McGee from around March 2024 until October 2024. In that time I spent tens of thousands of dollars in billing alone. In addition to that, my project was pushed out months which added more cost. None of the work I did with Studio McGee was usable, when I switched to a designer I had worked with in the past, who worked very quickly and thankfully saw a beautiful vision for the space.
> I had initially hired Studio McGee to work on my home in Park city because I live out of the state & I thought having boots on the ground where they could check on the project would be essential to such a big undertaking. Because of Studio McGee‘s reputation, I was confident that the team would go in with a vision for my home that would create a more usable space and highlight the beautiful structure of the existing home.
> The 7 months I worked with them were excruciating because it felt like a money hemorrhage, they work like an assembly line meaning that there’s specialized team or person for every job, so the turnaround times are so incredibly slow and frustrating. There’s not one person for every job, for the designers there’s a senior designer and a junior designer, so you are paying a double rate every hour, and they always work in tandem, even for a phone call. In addition to that, sometimes there’s another designer, Shae McGee, which I will mention in more detail later. They bill like attorneys, so if you look at a bill, it will say “looked at Wallpaper 7 minutes” “answered email 15 minutes”. I think they’re so busy billing that there’s no time for creativity. In addition to that when Shae would look over and approve the project her junior designers were working on, and it was an astronomical fee. This is the 8th project I’ve done whether it’s a remodel or a ground up, and it was the most chaotic, the most overbilled and by far the most disappointing in terms of what came through for design.
> Had the design been amazing and impeccable, I would have overlooked the cost because you know going in that they are top-tier in terms of price, but you also expect that in SERVICE and design outcome. However, in my case I had to completely start over which lost me, as I said, tens of thousands of dollars in addition to months of time that I was out of my home, storage fees etc. The only thing I’m grateful for is because of the pace of the team, the only thing that was ordered was the stove so I didn’t have to pay astronomical restocking fees on selections I would have not liked. I am posting this review because I know how personal and emotional it is to go through a remodel or a build. I hope that my experience can help others to get a clear level expectation, or at least open up a conversation with these designers for any project they are considering.

> I placed an order on May 30th with a lead time of 4-6 weeks. It is now July 25th and no furniture in sight. I have contacted customer service on numerous occasions and they say shipment will be next week. There is no sign of shipment and I am going to try to get a refund. Wish me luck...

> Be very cautious when purchasing from Studio McGee. I found their customer service & return policy in my particular circumstance to be very unethical. I also found they misreprentsted the product I purchased on their website.
>
> I purchased 2 Acme Flush Mounts for $1,100,00 + tax. Light fixtures looked good when I recieved but when I installed fixtures glass on both fixtures were defective. Glass only looks defective when light in fixture is turned on. I reached out to Studio McGee on this matter and requested for the glass to be replaced or for a full refund. I was told they would not replace defective glass and that I was not eligible for a return or refund as lights were installed. I told rep that you're not able to see defects on glass until lights are switched on and fixtures are installed so that this policy should not apply in this particular circumstance. Rep did not care and just repeated their policy. I asked rep to speak to a manager and they again repeated policy via email the following day and that they would not be doing anything for me on this matter. I find this to be very unethical as I did not know my fixtures/glass on fixtures had defects until installed. The rep also said they spoke with supplier/manufacturer and said that the supplier/manufacturer said defects on glass was very normal. If this was the case then why didn't Studio McGee mention this on their website or show on photo's? Because of this I think they also misrepresent their products or at least they misrepresented this product.
>
> Hopefully this post can help other buyers beware and for Studio McGee to be more ethical and properly represent their products in the future.

> I ordered the Harlow Bench for my client. She has had it a little over a month and all the paint has started chipping off on it. Studio McGee's response is that the grace period of 48 hrs has passed so this is not their problem anymore. They will not stand behind their products! Yes, they sell some trusted manufacturers on their website, but if you are not familiar with the brand I would not bother with ordering products from them. Just go straight to the source.

> I am reminded of how grateful I am that we found Shea McGee, every time I walk into my home! Shea helped me with styling & space design and selected affordable, yet high-end, furniture, art work, drapes, rugs and lighting to brighten my home. She was always available by e-mail to run ideas by and she made the entire process so easy and enjoyable. Shea has an amazing eye and is extremely talented at her craft. We get compliments on our home from everyone who comes through and we have Shea to thank for that!! Shea's fees are more than fair, and we ultimately ended up saving by not spending money on pieces that didn't work. I would use her again and again (and again!!).

> Hiring a designer has always been a scary leap for me until I met Shea McGee! I hired her to design my office and several other projects. She has amazing style and really listens to my input throughout the process. She is very flexible about working within my budget and will give me several pricing options to make sure I am comfortable with how much I'm spending on each project. The thing I love most about Shea is that no matter how hard I try, I know I could never make my house as beautiful as she does! She makes things light and airy and happy. I love that her spaces don't look forced or over-designed, just inviting! The entire process was delightful and she is very patient and just fun to work with! I would recommend Shea to anyone and can't wait to use her more on future projects!!

> Shea was my first experience with an interior designer. She was Fantastic!! She understood my needs, taste, and budget. She was professional, yet kind and friendly. She is very knowledgeable as to what is available in design and in her designing skills. I had two rooms decorated and it was done in a timely manner. End result? I LOOOOOVE IT !! I have already recommended Shea to others!

> We hired Shea McGee to decorate our dream home. She's got such a great eye for style and an ability to balance function and beauty. We have a toddler, a cat, and a dog - so everything has had to be both beautiful and WASHABLE. Shea's done such a great job from start to finish.

**★★★★★ — estaffieri, April 2014**

> Shea is an amazing designer. She was able to pinpoint my style and deliver beautiful, professional results. Her styling is superb.

Our clients wanted something bright, open and inviting with eclectic and old world styles mixed with fresh and clean. We did the kitchen, bedroom, dining room, living room, powder bath, and exterior.

  - Location: Salt Lake City, UT

  - Description: For this project, the house was already really nice to begin with - it was in great condition, the decorating was pulled together...it just wasn't a good reflection of our client's style. With a lot of heavy finishes and rustic details, we redesigned the home to be more light and airy.
