Established in 2015, we are an interior design studio specializing in eclectic styles. Your home is too important to be anything less than amazing, so let us help you design spaces that are everything you never knew your always wanted.

Taking inspiration from the architecture and design all around us in Southern California, our purpose is to take those details and design solutions that express your unique style and personality.

Caroline Cressey is the founder and design principal of Rookery Design. She is obsessed with design and architecture, and especially with historical design in Southern California (yes, that’s a thing). She's been known to tear up during architecture tours, which was when she really knew that it was finally time to turn her passion into more, by studying at UCLA Extension Architecture and Interior Design.

She loves all kinds of styles, and can appreciate almost anything, and her designs will almost always have lots of color and pattern, because she believes life should be fun and vibrant and expressive.

It doesn’t really matter what her style is, because she is here to help you find your style and express it in how you live! If you think “well I know what I like, but I don’t really know how to put it together” than she is here for you! Your home is too important to be anything less than amazing.

> I had a total kitchen and breakfast room remodel in a 1926 house. Caroline presented me with several possible designs that completely reflected my vision for the new space. She was very easy to work with and was responsive to my requests and suggestions. I couldn't be happier with the results.

> I hired Caroline to design a built-in bookcase for my home office, and she did a spectacular job! She went above and beyond, giving me much-needed direction on lighting, furniture, hardware, and even rug. As a full-time graphic designer, I had quite a few requests: from cabinets that would hide my printer and fit all of my supplies to a countertop that would match my existing desk. The built-in is not only PERFECT for my needs, but it gives an otherwise "blah" room so much character (and storage space!). Oh...I'd also like to add that she found two great contractors, one of whom came in under budget. Turnaround was a little longer, but I decided that saving $1500 was too good to pass up. This was such a great experience that I hired Caroline to do another built-in for our family room. I seriously can't recommend Rookery enough - hiring a pro is worth every penny!

- [Mid-Century Modern Ranch](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mid-century-modern-ranch-pj-vj~2083112)
 - Location: La Mesa, CA

 - Description: We transformed this added-on master bedroom by infusing the mid-century modern character of the original part of the house. This included replacing the carpet with Garrison’s Du Bois oak floors, painting the ceiling white, and installing Farrow and Ball’s Aranami wallpaper in navy and white for a feature wall. We also added lighting where there was none, and furnished the space with a mix of new and vintage mid-century pieces.

 - Description: A bright and cheery home in North Park. This homeowner was all about color & prints. Most of her furniture was existing, so it was mostly about pulling everything together and styling it. We began by selecting a white wall color that would accentuate the light provided by the living room's clerestory windows. An awkward angled wall was made into a feature gallery wall. Draperies with a bright, mid-century modern print were added to give the space some flair.

 - Location: Cypress, TX

 - Description: For this home studio space for a very creative graphic designer and maker, she really wanted an all white space that should could then layer with color. Besides the color, she needed storage, since the room had none built in. So, I designed a built in cabinet that could store lots of art supplies and a large printer. She already had a desk with a birch finish that she wanted to use, so I included a birch counter in the all-white design of the built in to tie both pieces together. We selected the…

 - Location: Los Angeles, CA

 - Description: For this project, the homeowner wanted a new color palette and all new furniture. Her biggest request was for the vibe of the space be “sexy.” She already had the super sensual artwork—Art Nouveau advertisements and ladies with smoky curlicues—so those served as the inspiration, along with the fireplace. We decided on white walls with navy blue trim and fireplace to make it really stand out as a feature, and carried the navy throughout with accessories. Brass and marble finishes for her accessor…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Furniture arrangement for livingroom with no foyer** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Below is a photo similar to my livingroom. I'm not sure what furniture pieces/arrangement would be best.

A: You have options for how you want your furniture arranged, but either way, use the fireplace as the focal point. You could either do a sofa under the two windows on the wall with the door (but float away from the wall a bit) and two chairs opposite the sofa. You could also have a sofa opposite the fireplace wall (but clear of the entry path) with 2 chairs under the windows. Get a rug that defines the living room space as separate, and you will naturally leave the remaining area to feel more like an entry way. Keep the space in front of the door clear to be a pathway. You can put a console table against the wall to the left of the door with a mirror above it to further define is as the entry space.

**Q: Fireplace build out location in living room** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are just starting to work on getting our house decorated after moving in. We have this big wall that we would like to build a fireplace surround with a mantel and a spot up above the fireplace for a TV. We really like more of a modern feel. We need help figuring out where the build out would best be placed. In the middle of the wall or on the right side of the wall. Here is a mockup I did in photoshop really fast as a reference.
Here are some ideas for a build out.
We would love any suggestions for colors and materials. We love a more modern feel. We were originally thinking a dark navy color. I love the mixture that this living room has of silver, white, and wood.
Thanks for your help!

A: I would go for the off-center (right) option. I think with the modern fireplace, it makes it look even more interesting, especially with your ceiling the way it is. And I know it's just a mock up, but you would probably not want the fireplace opening to be quite so wide and leave a little more space on each side of the build out.

**Q: What are the dimensions of this room?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love all the great storage in this room! What are the dimensions of the room?

A: Thank you! The room is 11' x 14'5". The built in cabinet we designed is on the longer wall. The cabinet measures about 9'10"w x 1'5"d.
