My business was founded on an idea that decorating your home should be affordable, no matter what your budget. My goal is to bridge the gap that exists in Interior Design by bringing Interior decorating to those that are intimidated by expensive high-end design yet want more than a painting contractor in a white van can offer. Interior painting is one of the most cost effective services I offer. Painting an entire room can change a space more dramatically than a single piece of furniture.

**★★★★★ — Rokan, June 2022**

> Joe is simply outstanding at all he does. He painted, he prepped, he staged and sorted and fixed all kinds of details in our home. All at an incredible pace. Beyond all of that incredible help, he’s an utter joy to work with. I cannot recommend someone more highly!

**★★★★★ — Elizabeth Corker, March 2021**

> Our experience with Joe was outstanding. He was the key to getting our house ready for sale and was able to uncover, freshen and enhance its beauty. Main things that come to mind about our experience with Joe are:
>
> 1 He is extremely knowledgeable about big picture design (color, lighting, paint, furniture style and placement, flooring, etc.) and is capable of executing that design (painting, furniture sourcing and placement, lighting sourcing and installation, etc.)
> 2\) He worked with our home's style (Contemporary Craftsman) versus employing a cookie cutter approach
> 3\) He created a detailed written plan that guided the project, but was flexible as the job progressed
> 4\) On the few occasions that an outside expert was needed (carpet, some electrical), he was able to provide us with reliable contacts
> 5\) His work ethic is impeccable: always punctual, went the extra mile for us, detail-oriented, action-oriented
> 6\) He stayed on-time and within budget and was consistently able to find ways to save us money
>
> In short, we can't say enough about Joe and "Making Spaces Work." Highest recommendation.

> 110% satisfied customer. Joe Goodfield transformed our home. Our family of four moved into a large house and needed a plan - paint, flooring, and decor. Joe listened, suggested, and worked within our budget. We love our space from the laundry room, media room, kitchen to the Master. Couldn't be happier.

**★★★★★ — Make Your Move, March 2017**

> This project should have taken 6 months, but because Joe was so organized and worked so well with all the sub-contractors, we were able to renovate and refurnish 10,000 sq. ft. in less than 4 months. Joe was the ultimate professional. He knew when to concede and he knew when to push because he knew he was right (and I have to admit he was right 99% of the time!!). My property is amazing, and I couldn't have asked for a better person to work with through it all.

**★★★★★ — Amy Powless, March 2017**

> Joe is talented and understands what we are trying to accomplish in our townhouse. He is resourceful and manages time well. I really appreciate his expertise as we are having him update our vacation home. Being 2500 miles away from it is tricky, but Joe certainly makes it much easier and more pleasant! I highly recommend Making Spaces Work.

**★★★★★ — Stromberg Moore Hardwoods, March 2016**

> Joe was such a pleasure to work with. Effective communication to relay his client's vision for the project as well as his attentiveness made the project run smoothly. We look forward to being able to work with Joe again soon.

**★★★★★ — Southern Shutters, Dec. 2015**

> Making Spaces Work is a great business to work with. Joe's broad knowledge of just about anything having to do with your home makes him a one stop shop, and is a delight to work with. He is very detail oriented, and will give you his professional opinion rather than trying to push his ideas on you so that you can truly make your home "yours". We have worked with him for the past few years, and we have never had anything but positive experiences!

> We have had the privilege of working with Joe on four different homes in two states. Our confidence in Joe's integrity and abilities allowed us to collaboratively complete a large project while living in another state. In our absence, Joe kept us informed and updated on every detail of the renovation, and the project exceeded our expectations on every level.
> Joe is that rare designer that will honor and work within any budget while creating an overall high-end result. He is always punctual, detail-oriented, and makes the most efficient use of his time during the project. Joe maintains a high level of creativity while striking a balance between aesthetics and functionality for your home.
> Joe should be your first consideration when looking for someone to beautify and enhance your spaces. And, small dogs love him!

**★★★★★ — Constance Esau, Sept. 2015**

> Our whole house project involved changing almost every surface of our newly-purchased home in some way—it felt overwhelming! However, after a frustrating start with our contractor, Joe was referred to us and was able to get our contractor back on track. Joe was absolutely amazing. He helped us with almost every aspect of the redo—from picking paint colors and flooring to lighting needs and furniture, including furniture layout. He was even willing to meet me at stores to help make the process easier and more efficient. I especially appreciated how Joe could take my tastes and opinions and weave them together to create a lovely and comfortable space.
>
> Joe is a highly talented designer with all the creative problem-solving skills that can help one complete a large project with ease. Best of all, Joe is extremely personable and lots of fun!

**★★★★★ — mccarthy53, Sept. 2015**

> I have worked with Joe at his company, Making Spaces Work on two of my homes.
>
> There are people you meet and you think, “Wow, what a great person!” Others you meet and work with and think, “Wow, what an amazing professional!!” Sometimes the two shall meet. With Joe, he is a great person and amazing professional.
>
> Joe is super smart, creative and very loyal. I have been in awe of Joe over the years at how he has managed some of the most complicated projects and subcontractors in our neighborhood. His clients love him because he is honest, smart, reliable, authentic. He has the fortitude to do what is right for all sides without making nasty compromises. It is that integrity that makes homeowners respect Joe, and bad contractors avoid him.
>
> Joe is self-sacrificing and wants success for all involved. By taking care of his customers and helping others, he always benefits his company and drives new business. If you want to have someone that homeowners will love, subcontractors will rely upon, and someone you can always trust to ensure everything is taken care of, then Joe is your best investment you can make for your properties.
>
> Sincerely,
> Ted McCarthy

> I have used Joe's services for many years including interior painting, remodeling, furniture placement, drapery construction and general design services. He is the ultimate professional: high quality work, professional ethics, punctual, knowledgeable, and an all around pleasure to work with.

## Selected projects

- [Paintbrush Laundry](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/paintbrush-laundry-pj-vj~7845433)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: The couple moving into this house made the Laundry Room a priority. It is the first room you see when you enter the house from the garage. The room needed to have 2 functions, Laundry and Wine Storage. Custom cabinetry was fabricated to encase some HVAC duct work over the washer dryer area as well as providing concealed storage. The cabinets were lifted to make the flat surfaces on the washer/dryer and the sink spaces more usable. At the far end of the room sliding closet doors were installed to…
- [Big Dipper - Staging for Sale](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/big-dipper-staging-for-sale-pj-vj~6566105)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: Staging this 4-bedroom house, for sale came with some challenges. Walls and ceilings painted the same color were making the house feel dark and were not showcasing the architectural features of the house. I found a new appreciation for Navajo White and Alabaster White on this project. The initial plan was to paint a few key rooms, but as the project unfolded, it was clear the new paint was making the rest of the 18-year-old house show its age. The new wall and ceiling colors helped show off the…
- [The Ketchum House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-ketchum-house-pj-vj~5667456)
  - Location: Ketchum, ID
  - Photos: 19
  - Description: No surface was overlooked in this 3 bedroom 3 bath townhouse renovation. Concrete & granite counters with undermount sinks were added to the kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms. New carpet, tile and bamboo flooring add flow to the freshly painted spaces. Counter height was raised in the bathrooms. Storage was a high priority in this 1510 square foot townhouse. Cabinets were added to the kitchen and cabinets were upgraded with drawers. Drawers were added to cubbys next to the fireplace and a pull…
- [The Lake House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-lake-house-pj-vj~2379644)
  - Location: Coeur d'Alene, ID
  - Photos: 33
  - Description: The Lake House project stared as an empty white box. The goal was to furnish this lake adjacent house as a comfortable inviting vacation home. Wall color started the transformation from builder grade finishes to warm inviting spaces. The large open-concept first floor was visually divided with the use of wall color and chair rails. Bedrooms were kept simple. Paint was used to fill the rooms with color. Custom quilts brought warmth comfort to the beds.

  - Description: This project was furnished as a high end short term rental. The furnishings were chosen to appeal to a wide variety of tastes. Personal details were left out keeping in mind that the end goal of the property is rental. We wanted visitors to feel as if it were there home, if only for a few days. - [Autumn Woods - Exterior Paint](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/autumn-woods-exterior-paint-pj-vj~2512109)
  - Location: Ketchum, ID
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Autumn Woods was an exterior consulting project. The 4 building, 8 unit, townhouse association was ready for a face lift. The original paint finishes had become badly worn and faded over the years. The goal of the project was to bring a cleaner fresher look to the buildings and make the buildings a backdrop for landscaping and summer hanging flower baskets. The original colors of the stucco finish highlighted some of the architectural details but in a very chopped up way. The original stucco col…
- [Spring Lane - Redo](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/spring-lane-redo-pj-vj~1308115)
  - Location: Austin, TX
  - Photos: 32
  - Description: This 2,779 square foot town house has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a partially enclosed rooftop terrace. Most of the furniture, accessories, art and rugs were purchased specifically for this project. The homeowner knew this was going to be a transitional home. Great care was used in selecting pieces that would be easy to transition into an unknown permanent home at a later date. Draperies, accent pillows and slip covers were designed and constructed by Making Spaces Work.
- [Wildridge - Ready for sale](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/wildridge-ready-for-sale-pj-vj~1307998)
  - Location: Austin, TX
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: This 2002 square foot ranch style home has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The goal was to get ready for sale. Half of the homeowners furniture and accessories were moved to their new house prior to staging. Fabric window coverings were removed. Ceilings, walls and trim were painted. The walls were painted in a warm tan. A darker shade of the wall color was used to paint kitchen cabinets, below the chair rail in the dining room, accent walls in the master bedroom, master bathroom and family room. A…

  - Description: This 2,554 square foot ranch style home has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The update and renovation included every room in the house. The new home owner had a small budget so we used most of the homeowners furnishing, rugs, and art. On a tight budget we used wall color to tie everything together. Acres of draperies, curtains and window coverings were removed to expose beautiful windows and give the spaces a fresh clean look. The parquet floors were not our first choice but cleaned up beautifully a…
