Are media rooms still in style? We haven't seen as many in new homes, but many of the homes are 4,000 sq ft or less that we've toured. Thanks! A: We design and install home theaters, so I'll say up front that I'm going to be biased. That said, if you're building the house for you, build a media room or home theater if you enjoy watching shows and movies on something more than a flat panel TV. If you're building the house to sell, check with a local Realtor and see what they say. **Q: Is this a home built New for someone? Wish it was mine.** *(in Photo Questions)* It has everything that I would want if I had a new home. Great work A: The theater in this photo is in a commercial space, but could easily be replicated in your home. We can work with either new construction, remodels, or just a re-purposed room. While a dedicated theater like this is ideal, you'd be surprised what can be done with a multi-use family room. **Q: Outdoor Sound** *(in Design Dilemma)* Does anyone know of good Outdoor in-ceiling speakers? I have to install four in the ceiling of my covered patio. A: Do you just want sound in your covered patio, or do you want good sound? There's no wrong answer to that question - it all depends on what you're trying to do. Do you have pictures of the space? What is going to be driving the speakers? How will you use the sound in the patio? **Q: Who to hire for sorting out the wires?** *(in Design Dilemma)* The house we bought is already prewired for everything but none of the wires have been capped. So we need to figure out what is what. Also the comm AV closet is unfinished. Who should we hire for this without breaking the bank? I'd need more information about what there now, and what you'd like to do to say more. Based purely on the picture, though, I wouldn't expect it to take an experienced 2-man crew more than a day to identify all of the exiting wiring. Installing and programming the "brain" is a whole different matter. **Q: New Construction/Basement** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello, I am finishing my basement. It's all framed, wired, rough in for a Home Theater, wet bar, bath and bedroom but I am struggling with the look of the final project and materials to use. What is my best bet to get over this. I know what I wont but want to make sure I get the best look and feel for the place. The sitting are is facing a big screen 133, with in wall speakers. Behind sitting area there is a sitting bar with 4 chairs. On the left side wall there will be a wet bar. Thanks! area. A: By chance is your screen 2.35:1? 2.5:1 is a non-standard aspect ratio. Most movies today are shot in 2.40:1, but people still refer to 2.35:1. What kind of screen do you have? Did I understand that the speakers are 45" above the seated head position, or are they 45" from the floor? If the latter, that should work fine. In general you want the tweeters in the speakers to be somewhere between the vertical mid-point in the screen and the listener's ear height when seated (usually 36"). Brad **Q: Soundproofing unfinished basement** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have a full, unfinished basement. The walls of the basement are poured concrete and are all underground. Want to turn that space into a home theater-type space. Only concern is to minimize the sounds from the speakers going up. I have one condition: no drywall. Some might think this is crazy. I understand, but that is what I want. If you have alternatives, please chime in. I know there are two types of sound: airborne and impact. I'm not concerned about the impact sound from the upstairs living room and kitchen coming down into the basement. My only concern is to stop, or minimize, the sound from the speakers going up to the main living area. The the kitchen and dining area of the main living floor is hardwood while the living room is carpet. This is what I was thinking. 1\. Layer of insulation, either 8" thick cotton fiber insulation or Roxul safe'n'sound 2\. Use Green Glue and nails to attach these 1" foam slabs to the rafters, packing the layer of insulation in. (this is what I will look up to the ceiling of the basement) Will this work remotely to block the sound from the basement from going up? A: @CancorkFloorInc has some good ideas. The bottom line is you need mass to stop the sound energy from traveling through the ceiling. When you get around to designing the home theater equipment and layout, I'd be happy to help.
