However, we encountered significant challenges due to poor project management and a lack of accountability on her part. > > One of our primary expectations was for Heather to coordinate with contractors and ensure a smooth and timely project, which we were paying her to do. Unfortunately, her coordination was lacking, leading to contractor confusion and delays. At times, she suggested actions that would have compromised the structural integrity of our home if we did not intervene, such as advising an electrician to cut a significant portion of a ceiling joist to put in recessed lighting even after he described why it was a bad idea. We had to intervene and reject this suggestion to protect our property. > > The most significant issue arose during the installation of our stairs, which deviated from Heather's proposed design and was poorly executed. Our frustration led us to reach out to Heather, hoping for a resolution. Instead of seeking to understand, she abruptly terminated our collaboration via email, listing everything that we had apparently done wrong and backhandedly apologized for letting us do those things, followed by immediately sending us an invoice. > > Interestingly, her final invoice included an unexplained "designer fee" of $210. When we sought clarification, she initially claimed that everything had been itemized. Strangely, the fee disappeared when we reopened the invoice from Houzz. She disputes this, but I have a downloaded copy of the invoice that reflects this before she updated it. She was also unwilling to help us get measurements for design work we had already paid for. And I'm not talking proprietary secrets, I'm just talking about how many inches a curtain rod was supposed to be from a window. We had folks come out and take those measurements and she refused to help us get that information and since she stopped working with us or even really talking to us in a kind manner, we have to eat that cost. > > One main fault Heather assigned to us was that we purchased some items during a holiday sale, which she approved before we did so. I could understand this if she told us not to when we asked. The one item we actually did purchase through her turned out to be the wrong model which she also incorrectly blamed on our indecisiveness, despite the item remaining consistent from her rendering to the purchase stage. > > As clients, we never insisted on a particular working style. We shared our opinions, asked questions, and expressed frustration when unexpected issues arose. > > We trusted her to guide us through the process, but her lack of professionalism and accountability disappointed us. While the initial design phase with Heather was enjoyable, her project management skills were severely lacking in the context of our project. > > I had to leave a completion date to leave this review, but it remains incomplete. **Comment from Heather Cleveland Design:** > While I do not mind a client having their own perspective on things, and they are always entitled to leave a review of any sort they would like, I will not sit idly by while people tell blatant lies about my work. I am not interested in getting into a long involved list of the many mistruths and half truths listed here. But I will call out the complete fabrication of the claim that I insisted that a floor joist be cut in order to put a recessed light in a certain spot. That would be malpractice, and I have been in this industry far too long to think I could partake in that and get away with it. It is also unethical, which is not how I run my business. We created a lighting plan that included a few added recessed lights in the living room and when I spoke to the electrician after he opened up the walls, he mentioned that the joist might be in the way. My response, which the clients heard as we were on speaker phone, was that we could move the light if needed as I did NOT want to cut into a floor joist. There were countless mistruths told to me about my various trades, and when I checked in with my trades, they all showed text documentation illustrating that the clients had made false claims and only included partial information when complaining. I cut the project short because all of my trades as well as myself felt these clients were not reliable in their accounts of things and micromanaged all aspects of the work to the point that they made my trades very uncomfortable. **★★★★★ — yingsu, Jan. 2021** > Heather is absolutely FANTASTIC! After managing a couple of renovations of my own in the past I decided as a treat to myself, I would hire a professional to manage the renovation of the master suite in my condo. I had been in my condo for over 18 years and the last space to see any sort of home improvement was the space that is supposed to be my sanctuary but had, through the years, become a drab and cluttered eyesore. This project was a big deal for me and I wanted someone who would manage the project from start to finish from selecting a contractor to selecting every finish and managing every last detail of how it should look when complete. Heather delivered 1,000,000-fold and it was the easiest, most seamless renovation project I have ever been a part of. My friends who have also had to deal with their own share of renovation projects agree since they never heard me say a negative word about the project or the fact that I was living with the construction and the next thing they new I was moving back into my new space. How often do you hear that?! And this is all in the middle of a pandemic! Heather has such a point of view and vision of every project she takes on and while it always looks amazing on paper, somehow it looks even more luxe and STUNNING in reality. You will not regret hiring Heather!
