> Michelle Scott is a wonderful and talented designer to work with. Michelle has helped us over the years decorating our house in Orange County and now helping us with our new apartment in San Francisco. Her professionalism goes beyond design, style, fabrics and colour. I've been known to be picky and she is very patient and has spent a lot of time with us going over options and furniture selections. Michelle knows her clients very well and listens to their need, style, and budget. Thank you Michelle for a fabulous looking home!

**Comment from Michelle Scott for Ethan Allen - Laguna Niguel, CA:**

> Thank you Jerry! You have been a wonderful client, and I still need to see some of the pictures from the new place!

**★★★★★ — btrollinger, Aug. 2014**

> I just read your evaluation of a member's question for advice. You answered so very professionally I was stunned into having to evaluate you on that response. You never made any judgement for or against the personal taste of the member. You simply used your good training, good taste and great sense of style to work with what was already there to made it not only work but make it show to its best! What a professional you are!

**★★★★★ — Josie McCausland, July 2014**

> For over two years now, we have relied upon Michelle's impressive creative talent and extensive design experience to decorate and furnish our home. The result is outstanding. It has truly been a match made in heaven; her personality and people skills are top shelf, and her innate creative instincts serve her perfectly to execute a design that will appeal to the owner, yet also play up the best features of a space. Ms. Scott seems to have an infinite number of ideas: the more challenging the problem, the more pistons fire off in her amazing brain. We have learned so much about design from Ms. Scott, and will continue to enjoy and appreciate a long, mutually satisfying relationship.

**Comment from Michelle Scott for Ethan Allen - Laguna Niguel, CA:**

> Thank you Josie - Your project is a great example of eclectic, personal style - and it's been a fun one to work on! I am glad to see that Cappuccino, the dog is enjoying the space, too!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Stair Makeover Help** *(in Remodeling)*

The carpet on these stairs has seen better days so we are looking to do a facelift to make them feel less builder-grade. What suggestions do you have for us? Would you re-carpet or go stained wood treads with painted risers? Would you swap out the handrail and balusters or paint? For reference, our style is transitional with rustic and farmhouse touches (we live out in the country). I'd love to hear what ideas and suggestions you have for us!

A: How big of a job are you prepared for? Under the carpet is likely plywood - which won't take stain nicely, because it's meant to be covered up. Rails and balusters are a big job too - if you are prepared to have everything demo'd and start fresh, then wood would be lovely - however keep in mind that wood stairs can be slippery in stocking feet - and that the stairs are one of the hardest used flooring areas in your home. Some people will do a carpet inset with wood skirting and ends of the treads, which can be a nice look that minimizes slipping - as long as a durable low pile carpet is used for the inset.

**Q: How much to remove built ins?** *(in Home Repair)*

Just closed on a house that has built ins with glass shelves and some kind of metal or laminate doors. They are white but very discolored. They are not at all our style, and we are getting quotes to paint them for several thousands. I'd rather just get rid of them but have no idea how to do that. Who does that kind of work? How much should it cost?

This is the only picture I have currently - from the listing so not my stuff and more flattering than they appear in person. There is a wood base that attach them to the wall but then the doors appear to be this metal or laminate material.

Edited to add: It is my first time posting here, so apologies if this is the wrong topic area.

A: If the flooring under the cabinet is different/non existent, then you could get new doors and face frames for the base units - remove the upper units, add a top - and have some nice storage space in that room. If that's your television wall, having the run of cabinetry there with different doors will give you space for electronics, and other things. If the flooring goes all the way under the cabinetry - then have them removed. You will have to repair the drywall - but then you aren't trying to make something that doesn't work fit in with your things.

**Q: How can I help this boring & outdated bathroom?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My daughter’s bathroom doubles as our only guest bathroom. I need to add storage but I would like for it to be out of sight. Any suggestions or recommendations? There’s not a lot going on with it so any ideas are welcome because it needs love

A: photographs would help with providing ideas

**Q: living room layout?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

These are photos of the model home that we are building. We will have medium light/warm matte wood floors with a bigger and more traditional style white mantle fireplace.
How should We layout the couches. Should we have two couches across from eachother like this with chairs? Or a big sectional? Next to the living room is the open concept dining room then the kitchen in an L shape.

A: First think about how you will be using this room - is it for entertaining friends and family? or will there be a television there, and your main family space?

Those questions will lead you in your choices for furniture arrangement & pieces needed.

**Q: Paint angled ceiling in bedroom** *(in Paint)*

Should I paint the sloped ceiling up to where it’s flat with the same gray wall color or leave it white?

A: if you do a 1/2 or 1/4 tone of the grey (that color mixed with white) for the ceiling - it will lessen the contrast - and soften the overall look of the room.

**Q: Need input on living room layout- thanks!** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi there
right now I’m trying to put my living room back together! The only thing that may be staying is the tan/camel couch! below is a photo that I love of a living room and I would like to replicate something similar:
my challenges are this: I think the ottoman is too big- correct? This one is a 48” square and I think a 40” would fit better..
i placed chairs around the room just to get an idea of the space- where the black two chairs are- should I do something similar and get more of grey/ white accent chairs in that spot? Or a longer couch?
where the brown arm chair is- should I put something similar in a light blue or white/ grey?
thanks for any input!
This is the photo/ inspiration that I really like:

below is my living room with staged furniture to see scale/ ottoman too big? Accent chairs or couch better??

A: Hu - let me know if you need any further info on that piece - Michelle.Scott@ethanallen.com
