She was a lifesaver for me when my husband and I bought our 1940s home. We wanted to update and remodel parts of the house, while still maintaining the great features that made us fall in love with it. Christin worked side-by-side me to extensively plan out those updates. I filled out a comprehensive questionnaire and we shared many photos that caught our eye. Christin carefully and thoughtfully picked out everything from tile options to faucets to light fixtures to paint colors and so much more. She also referred me to other vendors as needed. It was our first time working with a designer and it was OK. I did feel that Christine didn't look at a wide enough range of products per price point. Meaning that although we like high end flooring and tile if there is something that looks comparable at box stores for a much cheaper price we are not against using that either. It was probably my fault for not asking her to look at wider range of stores. I think if we had a larger project it would have made more sense. Other than that she was great! DO I DARE?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'm about to remodel my kitchen, which is inside the original walls of my 1940s cape cod brick home. I'm dying to expose the brick, paint it white, and then use open shelves so that you can see the beautiful walls. My architect is trying to change my mind saying that the brick isn't practical... it won't wipe down well, will stain, will get grimy with grease, etc. Does anyone have white brick walls in their kitchen? What do you think? A: Sometimes original is best and old brick is so beautiful - it will add so much character and depth to the kitchen. A suggestion to avoid greasy grime to stick to it: treat it with "Perma-plus" . Sorry, I forgot the brand. It's usually used on the exterior of homes underneath the paint to make the wood last longer. It's a great sealant, I mean fantastic, and has hardly any color to it - kind of milky. It will add a little sheen to it, so I would test it first to see if you like it. But it's more like a satin finish, not glossy. And if you're going over it with white paint, it doesn't matter anyways. Hope this helps! **Q: What Size Chandelier Over My Kitchen Table?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello, I'm replacing the chandelier over my kitchen table. The kitchen itself is 20 x 24 ft but the table is in a corner that's about 9.5 x 9.5 ft. The table has a glass top and is an octagon shape, 42 inches in diameter. My choices are a three light, 18 inch diameter chandelier or the same fixture with five lights and a 24 inch diameter. Guidelines I've read suggest 1/2 the diameter of the table, with the option of going slightly bigger or smaller depending on the visual weight of the chandelier. That puts me at 21 inches, give or take. I'm not sure if my selection has a light or heavy visual weight. Please help me decide, 18 inches or 24 inches. Here are pictures of both. Thanks for your help. A: I would agree: go with the larger one. You have still plenty of space around for people not to hit their heads and the bigger one will look much better in proportion to the table and kitchen size you have **Q: Interior Designers: What software do you use to project manage?** *(in Other)* I'm part of a growing interior design firm that makes most of its income selling design services. We do not make much income upselling products (the Internet kills that avenue for the market we serve). I'm looking for names and opinions of project management software from industry professionals. I'm on the hunt for software that can manage projects and time and keep track of vendors, contractors, and customers. I don't really need to manage products, but the ability to create a purchasing sheet/shopping list would be a good feature. There are quite a few ones out there — mydoma studio, design manger, studio webware, proworkflow. If you have any opinions on the matter, please share. And if this discussion already exists on this board, point me to it! Thanks! Keri A: Hello, I have looked at Designer Logic a while back as well and ended up choosing Studio Webware, now Studio Designer. I also currently use Ivy in an attempt to find the perfect fit for my company. It's really hard to make a decision between the two of them. I agree with DKapps Design that a lot of them are kind of busy and Ivy is beautiful and straight forward and now has the assets feature which I love. I love the Payscape option though from Studio Designer. Every company is constantly improving so it can make the decision hard. I do think that Studio Designer and Ivy are the best not he market but it totally depend son your business needs of course. Ivy can't handle inventory btw. Good luck! **Q: pendant fixtures** *(in Photo Questions)* The pendant lights are awesome. What company makes them? Model name? A: Looks like the Patrick by Visual Comfort ... I am thinking about using them in one of my kitchen projects too **Q: Need help with mantle** *(in Design Dilemma)* I recently bought a home with a rather dated mantle. I showed a picture to a local interior designer and she suggested doing nothing with it and just painting the oak black. She also mentioned and google seems to confirm that brass is making a way back replacing chrome and nickel finishes. Also debating on placing a TV above. Thoughts? A: Go with the black for sure! What are you going to do about the hearth? You can replace that with a light colored stone - that would look good and give you some contrast.
