> After having our blinds for about 6 months now, we are very happy that we went with Window Accents. Shaun was great to work with and we appreciate his attention to detail. He made sure everything was perfect for our new house, even down to the smallest inches. They have a great selection of blinds and the blinds were also very good quality. We love our blinds and would recommend Window Accents to anybody.

> I got new shades and curtains from Window Accents a few days ago. I AM DELIGHTED! Kim worked with me to pick out curtains and shades which would work with my traditional home, which has more of a tendency to modern décor inside style. I could not be happier with the results. Installation was relatively quick (a couple hours for many windows/rooms) and of the highest quality. EVERYTHING worked as expected, including interfaces from the electronic shades to their remote control, my wifi, smartphone, and Alexa. When there was a dye-lot problem with the fabric I'd ordered for the dining room curtains, Kim worked with me to resolve the problem and determine that my other choice for curtains was available. This is a quality business, with a quality product, quality installation, and quality operation and capabilities. You can do no better than these folks.

## Community Q&A

**Q: I assume this is a sliding glass door. What is the covering?** *(in Photo Questions)*

My sliding doors face the woods. I want something natural and feel natural woven wood blinds would look best. I cannot tell if that is what this window covering is made of.

A: No, this is a Duette honeycomb Vertiglide. But we do have a vertical option within the woven wood collection. I would be happy to show it to you.

**Q: Are Hunter Douglas solar shades the right solution?** *(in Home Decorating)*

We have two casement windows on either side of the rangetop in the kitchen. I am trying to balance having as much light as possible in the kitchen, but add some privacy from the street and from our neighbor's backyard. I'm leaning towards the Hunter Douglas solar shades in either the 3 (sheer) or 5 (very sheer) level. Our neighbor has the shades in the 3 level. I understand it will not block the view from the outside at night. I'm not fond of the shades that fold down from the top. Because they are right next to the rangetop, I am mindful of fabrics and cleaning. Would you recommend the Hunter Douglas solar shades? Or another product? Thanks!!!
Here are the windows on either side of the range top.
Here is our friend's level 3 solar shade. We would do ours in white.

A: Solar shades are a great way to block the glare and add privacy during the daylight hours. You are correct that they do not offer privacy at night. I am glad you have seen them at your neighbor's home, so you can understand the function exactly. What you want to look at is the % of view through that the fabric has. This will be 1%, 3%, 5%, 10%, 0r 14%. The higher the number, the more view through, but also more light coming in. I usually recommend a 3 or 5% view through to cut glare, add daytime privacy, but still be able to see out.

**Q: Which are better Norman or Hunter Douglas Shutters?** *(in Home Decorating)*

I'm getting new composite type shutters for my dining room and office. Which brand is better Norman or Hunter Douglas Shutters?

A: They are both very high quality shutters. I sell both so I will tell you some of what plays into the decisions that I have seen. Norman is made in China and takes about 8 weeks to receive, whereas Hunter Douglas is made in the United States and usually ships in 3 - 4 weeks. The Hunter Douglas costs about 20% more. You can also pay more to have the Norman express shipped, which brings the price closer to the Hunter price. Often, people feel strongly one way or the other about buying American made so that ends the discussion. If not, then are other things to consider, too. This is where you really need to rely on the professional advice of the person who will be installing the shutters. The two companies offer different selections of frames. Your window architecture will determine what frames can be used. And lastly, Norman's warranty is for the life of the shutter with the original purchaser. Hunter Douglas warranty is transferrable to a new homeowner, truly for the life of the shutter.

**Q: Sheer shades & roman shades.. Too much??** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need privacy so I want to add a shade to my window treatments. My original plan was to add a sheer panel, but after thinking about it, that's not going to be enough coverage. So, I'm thinking about adding off white/eggshell roman shades to my curtains, along with the white sheet I originally wanted to do. Too much?? Any better ideas?? (The pic with the chair was my inspiration... The one with the ugly grill for a view is my actual window.)

A: You have done a good job so far of recreating your inspiration. It always helps to have a goal to work toward. But, as you have learned, the inspirations we get from other photos need to be just that - inspiration, not exact duplication. Your exact situation is likely to be different that the situation in the photo. You have different goals, too. Decide what it is exactly that you want to accomplish by adding another layer. Do you want to block the view of the grill? Are you wanting privacy day/night? Are you just wanting to diffuse light or do you need more light control for television viewing? Do you want to add further softening? After you answer all these questions you will have a better idea of direction.

**Q: Need Help With Kitchen Doorwall Window Treatment** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am working on drapery window treatments for my kitchen. My specific question is what would you recommend I put on the door wall? The window above the sink will have a Roman Shade. I'd like to put a window treatment made of fabric on the door wall to soften the look. It opens from the right and there is a set of light switches and phone on the right side too. I like simple drapery treatments like Roman Shades or panels and do not want to install blinds. It also opens from the right side, so a panel on the right may accidentally become closed in the door wall due to wind, kids, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A: I would agree with many of these comments. Traversing draperies would be an excellent choice. Use either the same fabric as the roman shade or a coordinating pattern. I would recommend a good quality traverse rod that will allow the drapery to traverse around the center support brackets. Definitely no grommets, they are not easy to slide. Lovely room!

**Q: Curtain suggestions?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Walls are Bravo Blue by Sherwin Williams and couch is orange mid-century modern. Room has an abundant amount of light throughout the day as it's the 4th floor facing the South and West in West Hollywood, CA. My partner and I are in the process of getting curtains. Not sure of the look or color yet, but we love the idea of having ceiling to floor length and keeping a lot of light still. Any suggestions?

A: I like the idea of a strong fabric with large pattern and bold color on the drapery. Extend the rod wider than the window so that the draperies cover the wall next to the window and then a few inches into the window to cover the frame. Definitely hang them as high as possible. When considering a blind or shade, just think of what your objectives are - do you need privacy, or just light control?
