In May 2017 Elaine Monaco came to my house to measure and show me some options for window treatments for my kitchen. I selected one that I liked and we completed the paperwork. Elaine was very friendly at that time. We specifically spoke about scheduling installation around my work and family life schedules. Elaine told me it would be absolutely no problem. > That all changed after the blinds came in, when I was informed that the only time her installers could do the work was late afternoon on Tuesdays or Saturday mornings, neither of which worked with my schedule. I offered multiple other options, 6 hour windows two weekdays a week on my work from home days. I was willing to wait a few extra weeks, but since she had told me my schedule would be no problem I expected she would work it out. Unfortunately, Elaine did not see it that way. She offered to have him come while I was at work, instructing me to leave my house unlocked for a complete stranger to come in and do work and leave a check or cash for the remainder what I owed. I explained that I was not comfortable with that and asked her to keep trying to find a date and time for installation. Elaine’s whole demeanor changed at this point. She became defensive and even demanding… Offering me a day/time less than a week away and requiring me to respond within 24 hours or lose the spot. At east half of those “offers” were the same Tuesday afternoon/Saturday morning slots I had already said I couldn’t do. Others would have been ok if they hadn’t been so last minute. When I asked if we could book a little further out, thinking that would make it easier for all parties to find an opening that worked. I was told that her installers had a “dynamic schedule,” and that this is the best she can offer me. > To make it even more uncomfortable, she repeatedly pointed out that I would need to pay the balance owed before any work could be completed. Having worked with more than a few contractors over the years, I know better than to do that as it leaves you with no recourse in the even of incomplete or shoddy work. Rather than understanding this, she seemed to take it personally and became even more defensive. > It is now February 2018 and I still do not have my window treatments nor a date/time for installation. I have asked for a refund, since the paperwork used does NOT say “no refunds,” and was flatly refused. I am at a loss as to how this can ever be resolved. > Beware before hiring this woman/company. **Comment from The Reflective Designer:** > In 2018 The Reflective Designer will be celebrating our 38th year in business. In today’s volatile business climate where design firms come and go rapidly, we can say that our longevity is due to our high level of customer service. Our senior designer, Elaine Monaco has been with us for just shy of 20 years. She came into a situation where there were already two large casement pieces we were not going to get rid of, a color of paint on the walls not of her choosing and made it all work. I needed to update the ;look of my Master because the Master Bathroom had just been updated and in the construction upheaval the Master bedroom got filthy with construction dust. We ripped out rugs, through out bedspreads, pillows, ripped down wallpaper, all things that couldn't be salvaged and she came to the rescue, making our bedroom go very well with the new bath. As far as the blinds, I decided on a combination of plantation shutters on the lower level and blinds on the second floor. She helped me to keep costs under control by sharing her knowledge of the hunter Douglas product line. The blinds are stunning! And the shutters are gorgeous! They have added so much value to the home. I would recommend Beverly to anyone and everyone. Do people generally get all the same color lights? Is it odd to have some white, some yellow? Thanks. A: Never use 4000K for interiors unless it is a manufacturing plant or big box store. 2700K mimics incandescent, however I find that areas like kitchens and baths do well with 3000K. If you have an open floor plan and are not comfortable with mixing temperatures between spaces then 3000K would be a best approach. My design work is all about stress reduction. Proper lighting is a huge part of what I do for clients. **Q: Where can I purchase the table? Who is the manufacturer?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: This all-hardwood table is from one of the oldest manufacturers in America. Entirely domestically sourced and produced by artisans, proudly made. It is available in different finishes. A: Area rugs are not a great idea for the elderly. You want a continuity of surface as older folks are apt to mis-step and take a tumble. Why not go for the Mohawk Smart Strand carpet? It is inherently stain-proof and used with their waterproof and anti-microbial padding, you can be assured that any "accidents" will not migrate to the pad beneath. **Q: Cannot find a Sherwin Williams gray that looks gray.** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am trying to paint my home a light gray and have a lot of natural blue light in my home. Every paint sample I get has a strong undertone. I've tried the following colors: Amazing Gray (looks like puddy) Alpaca (periwinkle) Useful Gray (green) Light French gray (light blue) I have a limited budget and can't keep buying samples. Please help!!! A: The best investment you can make is to get a color consultation from someone who understands pigments and how they mix together. Many people provide color services but are at best people who find matches for colors which already exist in the room. Finding the correct hue, value, and intensity that brings out the best in the object(s) in the room which are to serve as focal points is the holy grail. The wall color should in my opinion, never demand attention but rather should be a supporting player for the entire ensemble. **Q: Would you white wash the brick?** *(in Design Dilemma)* We just purchased a 1972 full brick ranch. I am interested in brightening the rooms up. However I am on a budget and we are painting over the wood paneling for now. what colors would you recommend? my bed room is a grey. should I white wash the brick in the living room and kitchen? How about to sun room? would you do anything special to the built in book shelve and should our focal point be the fireplace? A: Yes, please.
