We are very busy and had found it difficult to balance getting work hired out while keeping up with all our commitments. Mary was very committed to designed our shelves and cabinets in such a way as to maximize book space, but also to allow for an open place for a picture frame and for cabinets that are deeper than the shelves and to work with us on little things like placement of outlets on the cabinet base and top as well as coordinating and overseeing the carpenters work to allow us to choose from various designs for the edges of the cabinetry and the top piece of the shelves, etc... Space is limited. Option A has a bigger bathroom, bigger bedroom and smaller closet; option B has a smaller bathroom, smaller bedroom and bigger closet? Which looks best and why? Thanks!! Option A: Option B: A: I still like A. If you're not a bather, eliminate the tub and move the wall in to give more room in the closet. **Q: white Barn Door** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi Houzz community should I replace the closet door into a white barn door or just add a raised panel molding to the existing closet door A: If you use a barn door, you will lose any wall décor where the door will slide. **Q: Fireplace color help!** *(in Design Dilemma)* I plan to paint the walls a light to medium grey. The kitchen cabinets will be white on top and a dark grey on bottom. Should I paint the fireplace white, the same color grey as the bottom kitchen cabinets, or the same grey as the walls? A: I wouldn't 'match' the color of the fireplace with any of the elements you've described. I'd use a coordinating color that was close to the cabinet or trim to give a layering effect. **Q: Please help furnish my living room!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We're finally done with most of the remodeling and ready to furnish! Looking for two couches, two accent chairs, maybe a couple end tables and a nice area rug for our large living room to give it a cozy farmhouse feel. It needs to be able to handle the use and abuse of my husband, 1yo, and two dogs. Please help me!! A: I love the chesterfield. Even though it looks stiff and formal, I've used them successfully in family rooms. Camel leather will give it a more casual look plus with kids and dogs, it will look great for a long time. Cushions won't break down and get misshapen. Also, I've used oversized ottomans with rollers to double as either a cocktail table and/or ottoman. **Q: Help for living room walls and dining area** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'm trying to figure out what to hang on my living room walls. Maybe something on each side of the fireplace or changing what is hanging there. Something just isn't right. Even the dining room which is part of the living room just doesn't seem comfortable. Any ideas would be much appreciated. A: Also, your furniture is traditional with antiques thrown in. Maybe try accessories that aren't quite so modern. Ballard Designs has lovely, affordable pieces. **Q: what kind of cabinets to replace old dishwasher with?** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are getting rid of a very old dishwasher that is against the wall in the kitchen. I would like to add some kind of cabinet there, but, the kitchen cabinets are a rustic type so would it look weird to put something more modern? And with what colours could I go for? I guess I will be using this cabinet for storage and maybe the counter would be a cute coffee area....
