**Q: my head hurts. SW Alabaster** *(in Paint)*

I read another thread and it was mentioned by someone who painted an interior SW-A. They stated, ‘make sure to get this line of paint, as the color looks different. I learned the heard way’…. 😳😳 
So is that true? I mean. I figured if it’s SW that their own color would look the same mixed with ANY of their lines?? It only took me a year to pick a color 🙈🙈 Now I have to worry about which line I deposit it in? Hmm
Also. My home doesn’t get much natural light. Should I NOT put the Alabaster on the ceiling too? Any suggestions if not, for a white that goes well with it?

A: Some SW lines like Emerald call it eggshell, and some (super paint) call it satin.  They're the same though.  I used satin/eggshell on the walls.

**Q: what stain color for red oak hardwood floors** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hello! I’m hoping to get some advice on a stain color for new oak hardwood flooring which will be installed soon. Something that will go with my current cabinetry. There is an option to paint my cabinets but I’d love to see options. Currently it’s a very red cherry… I’d like to have a more neutral wood floor.

A: Take a look at fruitwood stain on red oak.  I think it's pretty neutral and would work with your cabinets.

**Q: Grading requirements for remodeling** *(in Landscape Design)*

We are remodeling home (kept the orginial foundation of 1300sqft and added 1000 sqft and rebuild everything new). Our site is a flat ground (i.e. no slope etc). Our construction permit didn't needed any specific grading permit. We have passed all the inspections and in the final phase of finishing (cabinets, flooring etc).
Our contractor recently mentioned that as a part of final inspection, there will be a grading inspection to make sure the water flows away from house. According to him the stucco needs to be atleast 6-8" above grade and we meet that requirement. However in some parts of the backyard the level is such that the water can flow towards house i.e. grading is not proper.
He is suggesting two solutions (according to him both are needed)
a) Create a drainage system where all the downspouts will connect to a pipe and the pipe will go to a pit in the backyard filled with gravel and covered with dirt and grass. The pipe would be unground and not visible.
b) Do hardscaping (pavers or concrete) starting right from the house walls. He is saying with pavers or concrete, the gap requirement between stucco and hardscape reduces to 2". So this way he doesn't need to dig out lot of dirt from the areas where grade is negative.
My questions :
a) For a remodeling project which didn't needed any grading permit, does the final inspection include such grading inspection ?
b) Is it true that the gap requirement between stucco and grade drops from 8" to 2" if grade is hardscape compared to dirt.
c) How much grade is generally needed for backyard ? is it 5% for the first 5 feet from house or 5% for the first 10 feet ?

A: The answer to your first question is that, yes, the grading/drainage issue will be part of the final inspection even if it was not part of the initial construction that got approved. 


We had the same issue in our backyard when we added on to the house.  What seemed flat and got easily got approved by the city, actually had about an 8" slope towards the house which we ended up grading down. It varies by city, but for us we had a raised foundation. If we would have had slab on grade, it wouldn't have been an issue.

**Q: Floating shelves... 2 or 3?  Spacing?** *(in Building a Home)*

We are having floating shelves between  2 sets of upper cabinets in our "buffet area."  They will be purely decorative (seasonal, etc.).  The shelves are 3.25 in thick (high).  Originally, we were thinking 2.  But now I am wondering if we should add a third.  If we did 2, I am thinking they would be roughly 17 inches apart.  If we do 3, they would be 12ish apart.  We thought 2, because the third would be so high and 12 inches could be limiting on some decor items.  And would items on the third
shelf look strange if they went above the crown moulding??We will start them after the 5th row of 4 x 10 subway tiles, so at approximately 20 inches above the counter (plus grout).Any suggestions?  Advice on shelves only please.  We are not changing anything else... tiles, counter, cabinets, etc.  We like all these things.  Just looking for recommendations on shelves.  Attached are photos of the actual cabinets with 2 or 3 shelves photoshopped in.

A: I think the two shelves will look better once you have items on them.  With three, it looks ok in your mock up but I think it will look a little too visually crowded with decor and only 12 inches between the shelves.  Also, items you put on the top shelf might be taller than the cabinets which would look off to me.

**Q: Bathroom vanity price -- could this be right?!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are working with a designer in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, and she said today that a 72" long bathroom vanity for 2 sinks, about 36" high would cost about $10,000 if we went with their vendor. Oh, and it's a painted navy finish, not even wood.

Does this seem right to people out there? We want something that is quality, but that is honestly about 3x what I thought it would cost. I priced out something similar on Room and Board, and it was less than half that amount.

I am stuck between shock and depression, and I am hoping this is way off base.

A: It does seem high to me, even for custom. This is a custom vanity that we just had built and installed.  It's 60" plus 24" tall cabinet and the total price was $3200 in a hcol area. That price didnt include countertops or hardware, and it's stain grade maple.

**Q: Removing paint from stone?** *(in Remodeling)*

Uncovered this beautiful stone fireplace. Unfortunately the previous owners painted it. Is there anyway to remove the paint and restore the original fireplace?

A: Soy gel stripper left on for at least a few hours, then use a scraper and wire brush to remove.  It worked for a brick fireplace I stripped.  Took about 3 rounds to get all the paint off.
