It was originally 12” so we were just doing shelving. We now have 15” - 17” of interior space. Should we now be using roll outs? Thank you! A: With 20 years of remodeling experience, I'd definitely consider adding roll-out shelves now that you have 15–17 inches of depth. Standard shelves work well in shallow pantries, but once you go deeper, items tend to get pushed to the back and forgotten. Full-extension roll-outs make it much easier to see and access everything, especially canned goods, small appliances, and pantry staples. If the budget allows, I'd install roll-outs on the lower shelves and keep the upper shelves fixed for taller items. It's one of those upgrades homeowners appreciate every single day. **Q: bathtub dilema...** *(in Bathrooms)* Hi-- redoing a bathroom -- current debate is if i should include a bathtub. Important fact- i do have one bathtub i can keep upstairs if need be, so there will be one tub in the house. Here is the rendering with the tub... the shower is not visible and is next the the single vanity. If i add the tub i lose about 3 inches of vanity space on either side. I feel like it looks forced in here.... but if it's not here, it's not in the room. I can't put my finger on why it does not look right-- might be that it's too tight to the vanities or not separated by a wall on even a half wall on either side... just giving me the look of being forced in.... If I do not put the tub in, my plan would be a large potted plant and maybe some cabinetry (but not blocking the glassblock). Sometimes it's not the layout that needs changing-it's the layers that bring the design together. **Q: Help with banquette and island placement** *(in Kitchens)* Hello, I’m trying to figure out the best way to add a banquette to the corner of my kitchen reno. I need to figure out how to have the correct spacing between the banquette table seating and island seating. I have wiggle room with the island placement, but the further ai shift it away from the banquette, the further it gets from the fridge and I don’t want to make that work triangle too big. Should I make the banquette table a rectangle or circle? I’d like our family of 5 to eat dinner there—3 kids on the bench and 2 adults in chairs. Does anyone have a feel for the right clearance here? Clearance between banquette + island (this is key): You want at least 42” minimum, but ideally 48” if this is a high-traffic area. 42” = works, a bit tighter 48” = comfortable, people can pass while someone is seated Since you have kids + daily use, I’d push closer to 48” if you can without breaking your work triangle. 2\. Work triangle (fridge–sink–range): You’re right not to stretch it too much. If moving the island starts making that distance feel annoying day-to-day, it’s not worth the extra few inches of clearance. Function > perfection. 3\. Rectangle vs. round table: For your setup (family of 5, 3 kids on bench + 2 adults): Rectangle table is the better move Fits the bench cleanly Maximizes seating Easier for kids to sit side-by-side Round tables look nice, but waste corner space and make seating 5 tighter 4\. If you want, I can sketch a quick layout with exact dimensions based on your space **Q: feedback for upgrade of 1980s house** *(in Porches & Decks)* We are planning to update the exterior of a 1980s Colonial style house (see attached photos) and welcome your comments/ideas re: any/all of the following: Replace siding (fiber cement w/5-6” reveal, leave existing trim), windows, shutters. Keep siding current color (or some sort of tan?), similar double hung windows, add shutters (contrasting color?). Replace front door with similar style (solid wood, raised panels, cathedral windows) in medium tone. Please suggest potential suppliers if possible. Add hip-roof portico (black steel roof to match current roof, extend existing gutters/dentil trim), new porch landing (approx 10’x5’), front stairs and railing, walkway (cement? brick? stone?). The stairs and landing would be stained wood and we would prefer to keep the railing stained wood (similar to the back deck) rather than painted to match trim color. Alternatively we could have wood hand rails and posts, with iron balustrades. Portico support columns: match to trim or to stairs/railing? From a contractor/design-build perspective, a few thoughts: Keeping the Colonial style intact is key. Fiber cement siding with a 5–6” reveal is an excellent choice it modernizes durability while respecting the home’s proportions. If the existing trim is in good condition, keeping it can absolutely work. For color, staying close to the current tone is safest architecturally, but a warmer tan/greige can soften the façade beautifully without drifting from Colonial tradition. For windows, maintaining double-hung units is the right move stylistically. Grille pattern and trim detailing will matter more than many homeowners realize they strongly influence authenticity. A solid wood raised-panel front door is a perfect upgrade. Medium wood tones typically pair very well with Colonial exteriors. Suppliers many of our clients like include Simpson Door, Therma-Tru (wood line), and local millwork shops if you want something truly custom. Adding a hip-roof portico is one of the highest-impact improvements you can make. It adds depth, shadow lines, and a welcoming focal point. A black steel roof tying into your existing roof sounds visually strong. Extending dentil trim is a beautiful detail if executed carefully. For landing, stairs, and walkway: Stained wood can look stunning and warm, especially if it relates to your back deck. Just plan for long-term maintenance (sun exposure matters). Honestly, for a small primary bathroom, this can be a really smart move. If you and your husband rarely overlap at the sinks, removing one can give you so much more usable space.
