**Q: Do I need these corbels under my countertop?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello, after 10 years, I’m so excited to have my kitchen cabinets repainted from a drab brown to the lovely color of BM Hale Navy. I have always hated the 2 corbels under the granite countertop... hated being injured by them & especially seeing unsuspecting guests injured by them! Over time they had become a bit loose and detached from the countertop so instead of repairing & repainting them, I asked the painters to remove them. They reassured me it would be fine not to have them on because they were more decorative than supportive, but I wanted to ask here... I’ve attached pictures including the measurements. Thanks!

**Q: Gutting Kitchen-need layout help. Sink is not centered with the window** *(in Polls)*

We are gutting this kitchen but I can't think of how to change the layout to keep the dishwasher and sink together yet center them with the window.  
Would it be weird to put the faucet on the far left of the new sink if it were in the same location as the current sink?  If it had a pull out faucet, it should be functional, but would it look dumb?
Should we keep window shape but take off that piece of wood above the window and maybe put shelves above window?
Other plans but would love input....
Remove all weird drywall above cabs
Install 42" cabs with a top molding and lights above cabs.
Replace floor, paint all cabs, replace counters, and backsplash.

A: p.s. switched my folks’ 65 yr old (homemade) cabinets to IKEA’s taller to-the-ceiling versions — and it makes the space look SO much larger. We’re all tall, but mostly keep rarely needed items at the top. Perfect for seasonal serving platters, etc.

What are the sizes of these frames?

**Q: What type of wood is this?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi there! I'm trying to figure out what type of cabinets we have. I'm sure there's someone here who could tell me! Also, are they nice quality? Would you recommend painting them? The previous owner of our house works at a very high-end cabinet company, so I've always assumed they were nice cabinets and that painting them would be a mistake. I'd love some insight from someone who knows more than I do though!

A: Pretty sure they're birch. From the comments, it sounds like people aren't so fond of birch. I prefer a straight grain (vs rotary cut), but I really like birch! 
If you decide you'd prefer a painted finish, be prepared for LOTS of prep work. Raw birch takes paint beautifully – but you'll be dealing with a factory finish that's designed to take a beating. Odds are, it won't come off easily. I haven't researched the NHance process, but it sounds interesting. If it fits in your budget, definitely let a pro handle the mess!

**Q: MCM or just outdated?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

As I posted in \[another design dilemma \[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/new-home-could-use-some-lipstick-dsvw-vd~4045958?n=4) we are buying a house that needs a little love.  Will only be here for a year or two and can't put too much $$ into the project.  The house was built in 1950.  The living room has an interesting wall detail.  Curious whether it is considered a MCM touch and if you can see how we can work with it or if it just going to scream to future home buyers that this house is dated.  (For the record, I kind of like it, but I am a bit weird)  The furniture in the picture is from the listing.  We don't close for about a month.  Currently there is a grass cloth or other textured wall covering on the non-paneled walls.    
The detail in question is the angled divider wall.  Would love thoughts on the ceiling and possibly adding overhead lighting, as well.

A: Looks like a very cool house – lucky you!!! Hoping you'll try to live with it ALL for a while – just to see how it feels for you. You just never know...
I grew up with a vaulted wood ceiling in the house my father built. It's the showpiece of the home, and I think it looks as current today as it did in the early 60s. Finally got to 'replicate' that in my current home's studio addition. I've spent thousands of days (and a whole lot of nights) under that ceiling, and it's been pretty wonderful.
\[ For me: Even if it's painted – once you've lived with a wood ceiling, it's a little hard to go back to drywall. Sadly, I'm moving this month. But, I'm going to have another wood ceiling – one way or another – in my new home. \]

**Q: 1890's needs a makeover** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We're in escrow on this magnificent old house that we can't to wait to make a home. Unfortunately the outside is so blah... Bottom brick is dark grey, middle is red & stucco is white. The black trim is sooo ugly and the red faux shutters are plastic :(   ANY suggestions of colors, trims or whatever would be so appreciated. Were in CA so weather is mild.
The real estate sign will be replaced with a lamp post.

A: Excellent idea from Johnson & Johnson Architecture - And it sounds like it could be fun. Even if you don't love the discovered color(s), it could give you ideas about lighter vs. darker.

P.S. \[:paranoid stuff \] Though the oil will surely reduce the amount of dust, consider wearing at least a light-duty mask while you're sanding.
