We had “Diligent Dominic”, our electrician, who was just nose to the grindstone in installing so many lights and smoke detectors. We had “Jammin’ Jesse” the tile guy for six weeks. He is a true artist and got us all channeling his love for music. “Sweet Sam”, our other tile artist, also did tile work for us during that time. (Because we had a lot of tile to install.) We also got to work with “Charming Connor”, who we didn’t see a lot, but he patiently listened to me go on and on about robe hook and towel hook placement options. Then there was “Butter Pecan Brent”. Brent did it all on our project and put up with us the most. He was our 5% guy who got the project over the finish line and kept us all friends in the process. (He also taught me where I should be charging my phone.) And last, but certainly not least, is the “Dynamic Dave Hamtil”. We couldn't be more satisfied with both the look of our new bath as well as the quality of craftsmanship in every aspect of the job. The Hamtil team was excellent and treated our house with respect which made very little cleanup. They were meticulous in every detail and kept on schedule. When they were supposed to show up, they did. Paul Hamitl was very helpful in offering ideas and especially helpful when we needed to choose a different toilet in order to pass the county inspection. Our new corner toilet makes the bathroom look bigger and roomier. We don't bump our knees on the wall. A: Hello! The name of the tile is Angela Harris Dunmore Blanco 8x8 Ceramic tile from Tilebar.com. **Q: Bad tile job...can it be fixed?** *(in Home Repair)* There are so many issues with our new marble backsplash install. Can it be fixed or will it have to be pulled out and done again? A: Sarah- I was going to suggest discussing the issue with your tile installer, and explaining that you will not accept the product. Some people use payment as recourse. Normally, the grouting is done with a rubber or plastic float, then sponged down. It would be unusual for any metal tools to be used. It really looks like it was cut, perhaps to try and correct something for straightness? It's plausible a metal tool was used to try to scrape down uneven grout after it was dry. In any case, if you leave it as is, you may want to place a bead of clear silicone at the countertop so it is a bit more watertight. **Q: Debating between Dutchmaid, Bellmont (1600 and 1900) and DuraSupreme!** *(in Remodeling)* Hi! We are debating between Dutchmaid, Bellmont and the DuraSupreme cabinet lines. The contractors selling these claim the line they sell is the best. DuraSupreme is much more expensive than Bellmont, and we're still waiting on a quote from Dutchmaid. We plan on getting a painted white shaker style door (on MDF door panels). Does anyone have firsthand experience with these painted cabinets? We're afraid that the paint will start chipping, especially at the joints. We've read horror stories online from all three lines so we're a little confused :( Thanks in advance!! A: We do not have firsthand experience with these lines, aside from DuraSupreme. I can say generically, though, to avoid MDF if possible. In my opinion, real wood (including wood veneer over plywood) is going to look and perform better in the long run. It's worth the added investment. Paul **Q: Question about demo and wall removal costs for kitchen** *(in Remodeling)* So we're about to start our kitchen remodel, and quotes have been ridiculously inconsistent. We're doing new floors, countertops, cabinets, and appliances. The two biggest pieces are removing a gas fireplace/partial wall that divides the den and kitchen. We have an L-shaped kitchen and there is a huge pantry that butts up against the stove/fridge/cabinetry in the L portion. So we're going to remove that wall and convert the pantry into more counter and cabinet space. We have about 625 sq ft of floor that will be removed. Does $13,800 sound fair for the following: \* Remove fireplace and brick \* Remove column and arches \* Insure laminated or other beam is in place to maintain integrity of upper floor \* Remove walls between kitchen and pantry \* Check to be sure of load bearing wall and install column to support \* Demo cabinets, countertops, floor, and any remaining structure in way of new construction \* Put up new sheetrock and prep for paint A: It's impossible to say without really firsthand knowledge of the conditions, etc. Based on my gut reaction, though, it sounds like a reasonable price, if not low. As others have said, research credentials, references, etc, to ensure you are engaging with the right team. **Q: Bathroom Renovation/Code Violation?** *(in Electrical Wiring)* We have a bathroom that was added sometime after our house was built in the mid-sixties. It must have originally been a utility room, because the main circuit breaker box is in the bathroom. We knew this was a code violation when we bought the house and my solution was to put a baker's rack with towels and such in front of it. The rack is easily moved if needed, but would prevent someone from stepping out of the shower and opening the box (seriously, who would do that?) This bathroom is in serious need of an update. The walls and floor are in bad shape and the shower is tiny. But....as soon as we get started on this project we are going to get slapped with a code violation. My husband says that to move the box would mean rewiring the whole house and would be horribly expensive, so that's not an option. We're in the process of finding a contractor, but I thought some of you might give me some creative ideas to get the ball rolling. At this time, I don't have a good idea of how much this project will cost. Let's just say that we have available funds but don't want to blow our life savings on a bathroom. I realize that it will be costly. Here's the bathroom layout and what surrounds it as it is now: What if we built a cabinet or "closet" around the electrical panel? Would that bring it up to code? With the bigger shower and cabinet, there's only 26" between the shower door and new cabinet. Being on a slab makes it a bit complicated to get to an alternate location, unless you have a sensible and code compliant location someplace nearby. However, the concept of an exterior rated panel box, as Fred outlined, is probably the most economical option. In my experience, when we remodel a space, the conditions of that space have to meet current local code requirements. These vary depending on where you live. I would suggest calling your local building department and making an inquiry about your situation. You can make that call anonymously. **Q: 3/8 copper tubing for gas range?** *(in Plumbing)* We had someone come install an addition to our gas line to accommodate our new stove. Looks like he put in 3/8, but everything I’m reading says it should be 1/2 or 3/4. One quote we received, the guy said he would have to widen the existing pipe(that goes to our fireplace) before adding on for the stove. We are calculating over 80,000 BTU it all ranges and oven are on...do we need to make him replace it to go bigger?
