**Q: raised or flush hearth** *(in Fireplaces)*

We're building new... and the plans call for two fireplaces, one in the living room and one in the family room. I told the architect to make them both flush hearths, but the builder is asking if I want to change them to raised. He says many people do it raised. I think I like the flush look better. Is there any rule of thumb about raised vs. flush hearth (like is one more formal than the other, etc) or is it all personal taste? (Btw, I'm using direct vent gas fireplaces, not wood burning).

A: I think it depends upon the size of the room and the ceiling height of the room that it's located in.  Once you get to a larger room, especially if higher ceilings and more furnishings I feel there should be a raised hearth for sure, otherwise the fireplace gets lost being so close to the floor.   If it's a smaller room with lower ceiling and your planning something on the wall above the fireplace like a TV or mantel shelf it may make sense to go with a flush hearth.
