I will be having caret removed and hardwood or LVP flooring installed . I will need to replace the balcony banister so the balusters are to code. I am thinking of sanding banisters and installing black metal spindles and painting the wood risers white. Wondering if I should keep the balusters white. Any input welcome!I A: I love the look of black metal spindles with a dark wood handrail. **Q: Dining Room Update Help Please** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, I am updating my 13’x25’ dining room. But I find myself a bit stuck trying pick the best options to make my room really shine. My existing dining room is traditional (Ethan Allen 90s Canterbury oak furniture set) but I want the update to add some transitional, MCM and/or glam touches. I would like to keep the table and am open to new chairs or refinishing the EA queen anne chairs (maybe black?). I want to replace the china cabinet with a long sideboard and replace the server with a slim small console. Also looking for a new 9x12’ rug, lighting fixture, drapes with three innermount natural grass blinds and to add a large plant. My current rug (PB Thalia - hand tufted wool) is only 3 years old but it still sheds like a beast. The wainscot, trim and the mantel/built in cabinets are BM Linen White as is the rest of the house so I was trying to keep this color. But I am open to a new wall or ceiling color or maybe even wallpaper. I am wondering if I should perhaps add wood banding to the built ins’ shelf edges to breakup all the white. My house is a split level so the first room you see when you come up from the foyer is the dining room (especially the ceiling, mantel wall and china cabinet wall). The DR has two 57” openings into the kitchen/seating area which has colors in a mix of black, white, cherry, expresso and cinnamon. The two DR openings line up with two frenchwood sliders out to patios/backyard. Below is a floor plan. A: Looks like a blend of styles, cottage and Tudor? **Q: Main Foyer Stairway Facelift** *(in Home Decorating)* We are currently updating this 25 year old stairway system in our home within constraint of saving all current wood shown. So the facelift plan entails: 1 ) covering all current inside stringers (rough wood, previously carpeted) with 1/4" red oak veneer and trim, stained to match the current wood flooring stain 2) finishing the outside bottom 4 steps (also rough wood, previously carpeted) with pre-fab red oak caps/trim etc also stained to match current wood floor staining and 3) otherwise painting all CURRENT stained wood parts showing here (in honey oak color now) to BLACK-- Handrails, spindles, bottom plates, everything. 4) We will recarpet the runs (also rough wood) with carpeting identical to all other carpeted areas of the home. QUESTIONS: See red circle in pic attached. We wish to add a finished "outside skirt" on the wall, beneath the bottom 4 steps. Should it be oak, stained to also match the flooring? OR MDF painted white to match the rest of the home's trim? OR MDF painted to match the current outside trim color of the stairway apron/run ( which is the current beigey wall color of the home)? 2\) How do you think this plan will look? A: I would go with white, the same color as the trim.
