**★★★★★ — Jan Carlson, Jan. 2018**

> Scott did a great job for us designing and drafting plans for a new house addition that included changes in the decking, a new carport and an elevator shaft. Scott was quite open to our feedback and very pleasant to work with. He turned around the drawings quickly and worked very well with our contractor. I recommend him highly.

**★★★★★ — Chris Papaioannou, Feb. 2017**

> Scott did an outstanding job with a difficult lot. We are more than happy, and strongly recommend him for your project.
>
> We started in NOV 2012 and finished in OCT 2016. Reason for the long period - we were living in Belgium, working with NATO, and in no hurry. Good communication by email throughout. Drawings were sent digitally, and when needed, I went to the local print shop to produce full-sized blueprints.
>
> Scott was recommended to us by the builder we intended to use.
>
> His expertise was essential. Our lot sits on a hairpin turn, with steep sides and some tough setback distances by the local homeowner's association. Mixing & matching plans from the internet and magazines would never work. We needed a fresh design from the ground up, to match the terrain, sun angles, and views.
>
> Finished product is beautiful and we're very happy with it.
>
> We spent about 2.5 years pinging back and forth with the drawings process. By spring 2015 we were ready to build. Sadly, by then, our chosen builder had retired. Guess if you wait 14 years to build your house, that might happen! Scott helped us sift thru the choices of builders.
>
> Scott did a great job managing our project thru the local HOA architecture review committee. There were lots of particular concerns with the colors of the stone and exterior walls which he deftly handled. He's got a good personality for dealing with special groups.
>
> As we were overseas, he was also very helpful as we worked thru the hundreds of colors/designs/aesthetic issues. He provided great suggestions for our final choices on all the different colors, making sure the various fixtures and fittings all matched and worked together at the end.
>
> He had a good relationship with our builder. They made a good pair, with our builder being a concrete sequential engineer, like me, and Scott leans toward the other end of that spectrum, like my wife. Made for a good system of checks and balances, good discussion of problems, and a variety of proposals for solutions.
>
> Scott always had time for us and was readily available during our one minor freak-out period when we thought we'd have to scrap the entire exterior color scheme. And, conversely, he did not push himself on us, giving us time to reply to any open issues. I was happy with the communication process.
>
> The house turned out great, and I would not hesitate to hire Scott again.

**★ — Jeff Norrell, Dec. 2016**

> I engaged Bartholomew to design a house. He sent me a price for design and we proceeded. He wanted to make the plans more detailed and elaborate than I needed (he likes to work on million-dollar projects on which he can bill continuously for many months), but I rejected that. Then when my simple plans were finished, he presented me with a bill for 60% more than he originally quoted. When I objected to the inflated bill, he wrote me this: “I will be pursuing legal action. This action will include, but not be limited to, a lien on \[your\] property and I will be contacting Haywood County to inform them \[my\] drawings dated 13 Jan 2016 are not released for construction. Any legal fees incurred by \[me\] to these ends will be added to unpaid balance including interest on the entire unpaid balance.” I ended up paying Bartholomew 40% more than he quoted just to be finished with him. It turned out that his design would yield a $300+ sq. foot house (though I had told him I wanted a house at half that cost). Do you really want windows in the toilet and the shower? the contractor asked me. It turned out that Bartholomew’s design was so impractical that it required a crane to put on some of the cornices. His over-priced plans were worthless for the most part.

**Comment from Scott W Bartholomew Architecture:**

> My every hope and intention is that all my clients are more than satisfied with the service I have provided them. With every project I look to learn something that I can apply to the next and this one is no exception. In this case, there was a misunderstanding about the initial quote for architectural services without which, I believe, the outcome would have been more positive. Additionally, I would like to think that if I handled our miscommunication and dispute differently the outcome would also have been more positive for Jeff and the project as a whole. This experience isn't typical of my customer relationships but I take advantage of any opportunity I can to improve upon the services I provide.

**★★★★★ — Harrison Tyner, Oct. 2016**

> Scott is great to work with. He listens to his Clients and produces great designs. His plans are clear and straightforward to implement.

**Comment from Scott W Bartholomew Architecture:**

> Working with Tyner Construction is always a pleasure. They are strait forward, honest and produce a great product.

**★★★★★ — HU-792713, July 2016**

> We highly recommend Scott. Scott designed for us a home that we absolutely love. He patiently worked with us through many ideas and plans; he gave us advices that saved us from making costly mistakes.
>
> Not only a detailed-oriented engineer but also a creative and experienced architect, Scott is definitely an asset throughout the entire process of designing and building. If we ever have another project, we would definitely want to work with Scott again.

**★★★★★ — Thomas Hunt, June 2016**

> Scott was easy to work with and knowledgable. His roll was both engineer and architect and he did excellent work in both capacities. Highly recommended.

**Comment from Scott W Bartholomew Architecture:**

> This project with Thomas (Tuck) and his wife was fun. We were able to achieve a great deal with a limited budget and take advantage of a unique piece of property. Thanks for the opportunity.

**★★★★★ — mas130, June 2016**

> We hired Scott to design two structures on our property in western NC. He listened to our vision and goals and spent time on our property. The structures he designed brought to life our dream and were in such harmony with the geography. The structure we fondly call The Garage Mahal and guest house is complete and the second structure which will be our home is under way.

**★★★★★ — larkelliott, May 2016**

> We saw a project that Scott did in our neighborhood and loved it. We subsequently called him about designing a boathouse for our lake front property. He had never designed a boathouse before but did an amazing job! We get compliments from near and far on the design; even featured in an article in the WSJ about boathouses! Scott was excellent to work with, I can't imagine a better experience.

**Comment from Scott W Bartholomew Architecture:**

> Any successful project begins with a great client. This was no exception. The Elliotts were even willing to have their project feature in the WSJ Article they mentioned. Not many people would be willing to do that. Thank you for the opportunity and praises.

**★★★★★ — jshefter, April 2016**

> Scott designed our house and did an outstanding job! He listened to us and understood what we wanted and was able to fulfill everything. He helped us avoid mistakes by taking the time to explain what would work and what would not. We would highly recommend Scott.

**Comment from Scott W Bartholomew Architecture:**

> Thank you for the kind words and recommendation. Jan and Glenn offered a great opportunity to help them with their retirement home. I am proud to have been a part of their project.

  - Location: Asheville, NC
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: In this wooded mountainside setting we have designed a contemporary home with details to fit the clients needs and aesthetic. The Fireplace/Chimney, Interior Stair, Front Door and Master Bath are of particular interest. With modest finishes we were able to incorporate some interesting lines and forms while keeping within budget. The Design and Construction Team consisted of the Owner, Tyner Construction (GC), Jason Fikes (landscape) and myself.
- [Craftsman](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/craftsman-pj-vj~2789582)

- [Lake House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lake-house-pj-vj~316587)
  - Location: Zirconia, NC
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: The Client had a lot on Lake Summit in Henderson County, NC with an old cabin which no longer fit their needs and also was in an advanced state of disrepair. They wished as well to move on to the lake full time and live out their remaining years there. The main aspect the client wished to retain from the old cabin was the screened porch and the feel of the house belonging in the lake and not standing out. They wanted it to look like it had always been there like the cabin did. Of course the new…
- [French Country Style House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/french-country-style-house-pj-vj~1686761)
  - Location: Asheville, NC
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: Old World Styles (European) are often a program requirement. Shown here is a version of a French Country stylized home, very popular here in the Asheville area. The setting for this project was in The Ramble Biltmore Forest, just south of Asheville, NC. Note the mix of stone and stucco, and fine details representative of the chosen style. High efficiency mechanical systems combined with a high performance insulation were specified to reduce energy consumption and provide for a green and sustaina…
- [Rustic Boathouse](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/rustic-boathouse-pj-vj~362613)
  - Location: Zirconia, NC
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Simple and efficient use of space in this project provided for a weekend retreat with the kids to get away from the big city. Set over an existing boat house and dock structure we were able to provide for a simple play place. Some interesting details are the loft area over and behind the kitchen allows a place for the kids to camp out, the indoor/outdoor shower and the rope swing makes for a fun way to get wet. Boat storage on the ground level provides a place to keep all the toys. Natural mater…
- [Tower House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/tower-house-pj-vj~1744843)
  - Location: Alexander, NC
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: Architects will often do things to themselves that they would not impose on others… unless asked. In this project designed with the architect himself as the client, a property was chosen to provide a setting for this house with a definite modern/contemporary styling. The elevated living arrangement provides for the capture of long range mountain views. Passive solar design elements such as orientation and large south facing windows, along with off building active solar collectors, provide a much…
- [Italian Villa](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/italian-villa-pj-vj~1801559)
  - Location: Biltmore Forest, NC
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Old World Styles are often a program requirement. Here a Tuscan Villa was the choice of the client for a facade to present to the neighborhood. The setting for this project was in Biltmore Forest, just south of Asheville, NC. Note the heavy overhangs and clearstory windows, both allowing for interior daylighting without the solar heat gain. High efficiency mechanical systems and equipment were specified to reduce energy consumption and provide for a green and sustainable future.
- [Mountain Ranch](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mountain-ranch-pj-vj~1801586)
  - Location: Asheville, NC
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: Often we have the opportunity to design a structure to set on a larger tract of land than is usually afforded in a residential development. You will not likely find Mountain Ranch listed in a design books though here we have a Ranch style single living level arrangement with local vernacular elements applied. Note the board and batten siding, Stone chimneys and rugged courtyard in a wooded setting. A bit of contrast to a typical Ranch style home. Also can be seen, the individuality of the client…
- [Arts and Crafts](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/arts-and-crafts-pj-vj~1801878)
  - Location: Biltmore Forest, NC
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: A very informal building Style, Arts and Crafts, allows for a warm and inviting feel. Much detail is expressed in an Arts and crafts house providing for a visual interest accompanied by a natural selection of materials. Within Green, Sustainable Building material selection is important in many respects. Materials appropriate to the architectural style of the building is only the starting point. Criteria such as look and feel along with sustainability, availability and durability all go into the…
- [Exterior Renovation and Screen Porch Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/exterior-renovation-and-screen-porch-addition-pj-vj~2090426)
  - Location: Asheville, NC
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: A Minimal Traditional home needed a face lift along with some additional details to provide sun shading and an outdoor living space. As expressed elsewhere the scope of the project is only important with regard to the needs of the client. No project is to small to not get the full attention of the architect.
- [Biltmore Lake House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/biltmore-lake-house-pj-vj~2090413)
  - Location: Candler, NC
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: A beautiful lot with 270° views was the setting for this Biltmore Lake House. Except for the Formal Dining Room which has a inward focus all other spaces inside and out capture the views of the lake. Though impressive from the rear the street view is very modest and subdued; an aspect often requested by our clients. Note the interior detailing including the ceiling truss work over the screened terrace.
- [Kitchen/Great Room Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/kitchen-great-room-addition-pj-vj~1720775)
