There's a raised hearth ledge underneath, but it's not the full length of the wall. The fireplace wall does extend to the outside of the house so I don't think painting will work because of that. Suggestions? A: While you did not mention your style preference, I will suggest an option to bring warm, cozy yet modern styling to your home. My suggestion is to update with a light upscale French Country styling. I would remove the brass enclosure, and consider updating with an 8 foot long Rustic Large Hand Hewn Solid Pine Beam mantle which will beautifully break up the width of wall. You can choose to place direct on wall for contemporary styling or choose to add thick metal decorative bracket fixtures to hold beam in place for an added country or rustic effect. I know that you were feeling uncertain about changing the color of the brick since it matches the exterior, however you absolutely could, and I would suggest you should. It would break up the spaces and add interest, You could still stay light by choosing a neutral color like a mushroom grey or go bold and choose a darker color ie slate, for added focal point attention. Keep the space light with some off white or neutral furniture. Use throw pillows to add touches of color. Add some beautiful airy plants in glass, or perhaps some topiaries in stone planters. There are so many great furniture and fixture suggestions on Houzz so, once you select your fireplace and room style, have some fun selecting your favorites! **Q: Houzz inspiration gone wrong... $10,000 wrong.** *(in Design Dilemma)* We recently renovated our master bathroom, and I found inspiration from a Houzz picture (picture attached). My house is modern with a lot of stonewok throughout- I thought this stone floor would compliment the style of my house. My contractor warned me that he knew no one who had done anything like this, but I decided to take a "design risk" because I thought it would end up fabulous and different. I was wrong. What we ended up with was a patio floor on the inside of our house (2nd picture attached) . When the concrete was poured in between the stones, it took on a dirty and dull look. To pull this floor out, the entire bathroom needs to be "gutted"- everything removed so they can demolish it. This will add $6,000 to the cost of what we have already paid for this floor, so I estimate it to end up being around $10,000. I should have gone with the Ann Sacks tile I originally loved! My questions: Do you see something I can do to make this floor better? Has anyone ever painted over slate and concrete? Or is there another treatment you think would work? Just want to explore all options before spending more $$ and I definitely don't want to "throw good money at bad". Thanks for any advice! A: At first I only saw the inspiration room and thought, " wow that actually looks nice"..but seeing the second photo of your bathroom, " wow, eesh it needs some tweaking" the stone layout is rough but what kills it is the light creme grout...this can look great, let's pull it together though:..A few ideas: One, the white counter looks odd with the cream and grey tones of the floor and cabinetry, it's distracting and off-setting..what about staining the grout to a deep pewter and sanding down the cabinetry and adding a pewter wash/paint/stain to the cabinetry: it would take a day or two to complete but should look a thousand times better and worth your initial investment..then the white/grey counter would blend better and the powder room would have a hint of masculinity and spa like feel...I would accessorize with mercury glass which would blend the white with the pewter tones.
