I had been wanting to revamp the front semicircle area of my home for quite some time----I had used a Landscape Architect several years earlier, but that front circle just never felt right to me. I did retain her to clean up & redesign the front circle and either side of the front facade. The total budget was just under $20K. Her crew removed some overgrown tall plants against the house and installed smaller, more appropriate plantings that will grow nicely. Also a few strategically placed trees and shrubs to add dimension. The coup de grace was a beautiful yet understated 2 tiered fountain in the half circle surrounded by flowers & rosemary, and balanced by two topiaries and some gorgeous lambs ear (which I had previously but never grew well) and boxwoods. It's a very beautiful design and I am thrilled with how lush it looks now. It is truly transformative! > > We did get off to a rocky start on the project. Her crew came and cleared out the old plants and prepped the soil for the new ones. Afterwards, I left town for a week, and when I returned, the project with fountain was complete. Unfortunately, the plants around the base were pretty thin & not nearly the quantity that we had agreed upon. The fountain did not work bc as an electrician was needed to come out and run the wiring for it. Linda did come out personally and make it right (her crew had done the installation; she was not present), and she also oversaw the electrician taking care of the wiring. Once it was up and running, we could see that the fountain was unbalanced as water was only running on one side. She ensured that the fountain company returned to level it. Finally, she sent out her sprinkler system person to ensure my system worked; he actually checked my entire yard, which was above and beyond my expectation. I did later learn that the tubing running to some of the new plants had been cut by shovels during installation, and so, I did have to replace and re-run it around the new plants. > > Update April 2021: About 6 months after completion, I noticed the $900/each topiaries were dying. Couldn't understand bc I was watering frequently during the hot summer months. Turned out that the drip lines had no "drip", just solid tubing. Don’t know if still available **Q: Need help with foundation planting around new church bldg.** *(in Carolina Gardening)* Our church has been established 5yrs. and now we need foundation plantings around church....would like advice on shrubs etc. that requires little maintenance. HELP! A: As a professional landscape designer, I highly encourage planting low maintenance, drought tolerant plant materials that once established will require very little time. Begin with keeping the scale of the design in mind - how tall is the structure? Then add a few evergreen small trees or large shrubs and tier plantings of a combination of evergreen and deciduous shrubs that will bring year round texture, form, color and fragrance. Also begin with a good soil preparation and top with shredded hardwood mulch after planting. I prefer a plant specific fertilizer along with mycorrhizae enriched amendments in the soil. Keep in mind what the garden will look like at completion, in three, five and twenty years from now. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish...most plant materials that are inexpensive is because they grow fast and will cost you more to maintain them with pruning and such. I will have a dry creek bed (grey rocks) going from the back of the house to the sidewalk. I want to cover the area with rocks on each side of the bed and have some ground cover plants that will eventually cover part of the rocks. Do you think it would look ok to put different color rocks on each side of the bed ? It seems that one type of rock would be too uniform. Maybe black lava on one side and salt and pepper rocks on the other side. Any suggestions welcome. This is in the central valley of California. A: As a professional landscape designer, I recommend using a cream colored mixture of different sizes and a variation of cream from pebbles to river rocks, stones, to larger boulders possibility.
