> Ed has done work on my 1906 Portland cottage for many years. He did a beautiful, careful, historically appropriate rebuild of my big front porch quite some time ago, and when it came time for new front steps and railings, I knew he was the only builder I could trust to achieve a perfect match.
>
> He and his crew worked efficiently to give me a beautiful new set of steps, with railings, balusters, and newel posts that exactly match the porch.
>
> Everything is accurate, sturdy, and finely finished. The team was friendly and professional, and the job was done on time and on budget, with complete site cleanup at the end of each of the three or four days' work.
>
> You can't do better for your classic Portland house than hire Fine Grain Construction.

> Ed and his crew did a fantastic job on our project! We had them replace our deteriorating deck and railroad tie steps and small retaining wall. The steps and wall were replaced with beautiful stone steps 3 foot wide, and the retaining wall was replaced with a coordinating block. The old pea gravel walkway was replaced with a beautiful flagstone walk with the same kind of stone as the steps. The same stone was used for steps from the deck to the back lawn, with flagstones between the steps.
> The old deck had been constructed improperly, with the deck boards tight against the house, and no flashing, so Ed and his crew labored in the brutal heat to remove all the rotted wood, repair and replace the affected cedar siding, and replace the damaged deck support. After that was done, they built an unbelievably beautiful deck from tiger wood, a sustainable hardwood. The workmanship and construction are outstanding. Everyone who has seen it is extremely impressed.
> We would enthusiastically recommend Ed and his crew for any construction or repair project. They are skilled professionals who work hard and have a strong focus on client satisfaction.. We are more than satisfied, we are delighted with the beautiful work they did for us.

> We have used Ed and his crew two times now for separate projects on our hundred year old house. The first project was work on our front porch. We have a large wrap-around porch that needed some serious work with support beams, new ceiling, and more. The finished product is gorgeous and we get comments from everyone who walks up the front steps. Our second project was replacing a substantial amount of siding prior to re-painting our home. Again, Ed and his team put in the extra hours and extra care to make sure the project was done well and above industry standards. Additionally, Ed stands by his work. He came back after project completion, well over a year later, to help with gutters that a subcontractor installed - no additional fees. We highly recommend Fine Grain Construction!

> We worked with Ed and his crew for more than 6 months as we tackled many projects around our 1931 English Tudor home. The most special project was updating our original master bathroom (which is also our main floor powder room) to where we could maintain the original charm yet update it to be clean and modern. We started with marble hex tile, a shape that was common when this home was built. We saved the original pedestal sink, toilet and vanity mirror. But we ordered new windows, added the timeless subway tile wainscoting and oval mirror and lighting from Rejuvenation. The result is a lovely, authentic bathroom that fits the period of the home.

> Ed and his crew have been a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend them. Ed’s estimate for my deck project was complete and detailed. His work was impeccable and exactly as described. When issues arose during construction due to existing conditions, Ed and his team created elegant solutions. I couldn’t be happier with the final product and am excited for the next project with Fine Grain Construction.

**★★★★★ — Sergio Fare, Sept. 2019**

> It has been an absolute pleasure to have Ed and team work on our 1905 transitional Victorian!
>
> Moving into our charming, yet old house, we had a laundry list of items that needed to be fixed. Ed and team tackled all items systematically with quality and craftsmanship! Being an old house they overcame, with fine grace and ingenuity, all of the hurdles and quirks that came with it. Ed was especially delighted to work on one specific project of ours, which was enclosing our rear porch and and designing a catio for our cats. What really struck me was how much great pride Ed takes in his work. The overall result is a beautiful space where our cats can enjoy the fresh air while still being indoors.
>
> Ed has excellent communication and always asked for our preferences and when needing to make important decisions. We have more projects for next year and we will definitely be calling Fine Grain Construction to work on them. Highly recommended!

**★★★★★ — Robin Yorde, Oct. 2018**

> Fine Grain Construction did an excellent job replacing some exterior siding and window trim on our home. Excellent craftsmanship, and Ed takes pride in his work. We would definitely use him again and highly recommend!

**★★★★★ — Ron Mitchell, July 2018**

> I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Ed on two whole house renovations in Portland. Finding a contractor that you can trust can sometimes be difficult but with Ed you get honest answers and fair pricing. The quality of workmanship is superior and his attention to detail stands out. I hope to be able to work with Ed sometime in the future!
