> Dorene has worked with us to design several rooms in our house. She spent time with us at our house, hearing our ideas and looking at what we had already done with our house and then she came up with a design plan for each room that we could implement. We have been working to put her ideas into practice throughout the whole house since our original consultation with her over a year ago. She has listened very attentively to our ideas, and sent us lots of suggestions to account for what both my husband and I wanted. We often had very separate ideas and Dorene helped us to compromise so we both could be happy in our new living space. She originally focused specifically on one main room that we really needed help with and came up with a great design for the room, then spent two days shopping with us (and our two small children) to help us pick out furniture. She was very patient with us and was willing to work within our budget and come up with creative solutions the we could implement that were very cost effective. She has a real eye for how to use furniture in different ways or how to dress it up with a coat of paint or an accessory so it looks like new. After we redid the room that she focused on, she helped us to redo our bedroom and gave us great ideas to make our kids excited about sharing a bedroom, and gave us great ideas and suggestions for decorations for our living room. She came up with a design plan for our kitchen as well that we hope to implement soon. Our house feels warm and so much cozier since we hired Dorene. We get compliments all the time from our guests about the decoration and style of our home. We will definitely continue to consult her for design as we continue to decorate the rest of her house.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Where can you get this vanity or one like it?!** *(in Photo Questions)*

Been looking for a vanity like this one and can't find. Would love to hear if anyone has seen one similar.

A: Where’s the vessel sink from?

**Q: Too much?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

These are two old, interesting window frames that I want to hang over my couch. In the photos, they're just leaning on the wall. The ceiling is high in my living area, and I think I need to go BIG to make an impact. Hang only one? Both? Too blah? (I do have new, more colorful throw pillows on the way, but have also thought about attaching and painting canvas to the backs of the windows to add color...) What says the Houzz community?

A: Hang them horizontally together, I’d add a magnolia wreath or forsythia one centered over where the 2 meet. Agree with an earlier comment to upgrade the lamp shade with a drum shade. The pleated on dates it.

**Q: The World's Most Unusable Bathroom: Vol. 2** *(in Polls)*

Hi All,
You were all so helpful in getting us to this point in our layout journey. We are still between 2 options: basically one with a door to the bedroom and one without. As a reminder and for newcomers, here is the existing bathroom- no shower, no storage.

Here are the two plans we are between. Many of you had expressed a disdain for a shared doorway into the master bedroom, but I'm wondering why exactly that is. Our home is very strange in that the larger bedroom (with larger closet) is right off of the front door and living room, so in no way is this bedroom ever "private." We were thinking that the connection between a bedroom and a bathroom would be a halfway "fix" to this odd layout, by at least creating an official master, so the functionality of these rooms is improved. As far as (our rare instance of) overnight guests go, it would be a little bit of an inconvenience to close two doors before using this bathroom, but is that more of an unideal situation than having to walk outside the bedroom, into the hallway, past the dining room and back into the bathroom to get to the shower? There is a greater chance of a run-in doing that.
All of this would, however, come at the cost of storage and a larger vanity in the actual bathroom. A 60" vanity JUST BARELY fits, which means we're looking at custom if we don't want it to look squished, and there just aren't many out of the box options for 56" vanities. I'm also afraid that it will appear undersized in the bathroom itself. The larger vanity will provide more storage and more counterspace, and perhaps look more in scale to the bathroom, BUT then there is no layout improvement to the direct entrance to the bedroom.
Please give me your harshest thoughts with these. This bathroom is going to be a major renovation for us, and alot of money, and I don't want to get it wrong!!

Here is the bedroom that this door will open from, very much "on display" To your left in the tiled area, is the front door.

Sorry about the chair with the clothes on it.. everyone has one of those, right?

A: Without knowing the full layout and all adjacencies like what the room is next to the other bedroom. I’m NOT a fan of a Jack and Jill type bath especially being shared with the master. I’d close off the glass doors and shift the closet as mentioned or after the new layout gives more closet space in the other bedroom I’d use that as the master one since it’s more private. Repurpose the room with the glass doors as an office with desk/Murphy bed, a game room or even a home gym. In the new configuration that is if you can relocate plumbing depending if you are in a private home with a basement or crawl space (jacking concrete slabs can get expensive or open a can of worms). If the plumber comes back and it’s too costly to move the toilet and everything than swapping the door swing so it’s the vanity you see first would work too.

**Q: Which pillow?!?!** *(in Polls)*

Please help which pillow looks best in the room and with patterned pillow the furniture /decor... is it the ivory or the powder blue? Please help! Also let me know how you think I did with the decor as I'm new to this!

**Q: Sofa size ok?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am looking to purchase a sofa for a tv room. It's a second room which will have a desk computer and a sofa. Would a 92 in sofa be ok in this space.? I taped the sofa and desk in the floor to help get a visual...

A: I recommend you keep the sofa 80" or less and not too deep, skip rolled arms and go for a simple track arm or English arm to maximize seating for this 10x10' room. Depth of the desk should be 16-20" with a non bulky chair to work at which could also be comfortable to watch tv. Without knowing what's in the blind corner from your picture I can't say for sure but if the desk goes along the window as I showed earlier another option would be to put the tv over the shelves on the left and place the sofa to the right when you enter. 2 cube storage ottomans could be slid over for putting up your feet or against the left wall as added seating. Kallax cubbies to finish the same height as the desk

**Q: Exterior color scheme** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have light blue vinyl siding (yuck) which we cannot afford to remove, however, trying to improve color scheme. Currently, there are faded burgundy shutters. We are thinking about navy blue shutters and door. Would love some input on this idea, or something different altogether!

A: For some reason I can't attach photos but I have added one to my "Beautiful Curb Appeal"...With the color of your siding and the house without the shutters I would bring in a punch of color-the yellow is too jarring and modern. I was picturing a warm coral (not too orange or pink) close to the reds. Maybe BM Raspberry Blush or SW Gladiola it's a little hard to say exactly when the house color may appear differently on everyones electronics. If I had an exact match of the siding from either the BM or SW fan deck I could better advise. On the example I suggested on house \#1317, I love the posts squared out with the little bit of trim details. Good Luck If you'd like more help tag me or message me directly
