> Malbec developed my basement (approx. 550 sq ft area), they did very good job right from the planning stage, working with me to provide the best usage of area while fitting within my budget. I was very pleased with a quote as well as with the fact that it never went up, except there were two minor necessary extra charges (total of $225). Quality of work was very good, all subcontractors were excellent. All of Malbec staff were easily reachable on the phone which made communication easy. Timing was excellent as well. There were few minor hiccups, but I don't think any construction project will go without it, and everything was fixed and didn't cost me extra. Overall, project went very smooth and I would like to thank Lindsay, Mike, Luke and Kim for the great job. I wouldn't have any problems recommending Malbec to my friends and family.

> We converted a barn into a home and in the early stages had many builders look at the project who didn't seem to want to touch it. They didn't have a vision and didn't want the hassle. When Malbec Homes first saw the project we could tell that they were the ones for the job! They could see the potential and shared our vision for what the completed job could be.

> We thoroughly enjoyed working with Mike and Malbec Homes from initial meeting through completion. We were impressed that they offered to come to our house and take actual measurements and discover what our needs were before preparing the quote. The quote was very reasonable and their spec finishes are of high quality. We particularly love the built-in entertainment unit with fireplace! The project was completed on time and all the trades were friendly and respectful.
>
> We have recommended Malbec homes to friends and will continue to recommend them and will use them again for any future projects.

- [From Concrete Barn to Custom Home](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/from-concrete-barn-to-custom-home-pj-vj~169979)
  - Location: Calgary, AB
  - Photos: 26
  - Description: Since this 1920s concrete barn was stripped down to its bare bones, the project was more of a custom build than a renovation. We worked with the owners to create a rustic, industrial style that paid homage to its history, while also creating a stunning home for its family. These are some of the steps we took and considerations we made: - Barn boards were reclaimed and used for stairs; the hemlock from the hayloft ceiling was used for floors; the corrugated tin roof was recycled for island claddi…
- [From Top to Bottom](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/from-top-to-bottom-pj-vj~734943)
  - Location: Calgary, AB
  - Photos: 20
  - Description: One of our biggest renovations, we tackled almost every corner of this 2,200-square-foot home. We removed walls, built new ones, completely redid the ceiling and the floors, added new windows, new lighting, new baseboards and casings, and even speakers throughout the house. And, we updated all the design details, like granite countertops and finishings. Here are some of the bigger highlights of the project: • Added a second story above the garage. This additional 200 square feet is a fourth bedr…
- [Two Stories, Two Stages](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/two-stories-two-stages-pj-vj~450266)
  - Location: Calgary, AB
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: Renovating this two-storey, 1,700+ square-foot home in the Calgary community of Varsity ended up being a two-stage project. At first, we were hired to redo the basement, garage, and exterior, along with the roof. The clients were so happy with the results, they asked us back for a complete renovation of the main and second floors. Here’s what we did: - Turned a four-bedroom plan into a three-bedroom by converting a small bedroom into a luxurious walk-in closet and expanding the size of the maste…
- [More than a Man Cave Basement Development](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/more-than-a-man-cave-basement-development-pj-vj~172391)
  - Location: Calgary, AB
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: More man emporium than man cave, this basement development is a fantastic reason to never see the light of day. But you will because this walkout has a fireplace on one side framed by very good-sized windows. This is some of what you’ll find down there: - A golf simulator (aka swing station). To install this, we cut out the concrete, shored up the walls, jackhammered out six old footings, dug down two more feet to put in six new footings, concrete walls and sump pump. Then we poured new floors,…
- [Turning Small Spaces into Big Ones](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/turning-small-spaces-into-big-ones-pj-vj~689322)
  - Location: Calgary, AB
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: We wouldn’t call this renovation a total overhaul, but it was very close. In this 1,640 square-foot home, we tackled the basement, main floor and second floor. Our biggest challenge – and success – with this project was making a relatively small main floor appear and function like a large space. Here’s what we did from one floor to the next: - Redesigned the kitchen, which included changing the plumbing and adding a large island as a new focal point. - Removed a corner pantry in the kitchen to i…
- [The Non-Basement Basement Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-non-basement-basement-renovation-pj-vj~828242)
  - Location: Calgary, AB
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: his basement renovation is the most unbasement-like development Malbec Homes & Renovations has ever done in Calgary. The large windows allow for extensive light to shine in. And the room feels spacious and open since we replaced the staircase wall with a railing. Other features we designed and built: - A coffered ceiling that integrates the dropped ducts but permits for more height where possible. Speakers and pot lighting also sit within the ceiling. - The kitchen/bar has LED lighting in and un…
- [Reworking a Walkout](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/reworking-a-walkout-pj-vj~689348)
  - Location: Calgary, AB
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: It’s great to have a basement development project that’s also a walkout as it gives us lots of natural light to work with and, of course, a brighter space for the residents to enjoy. Our biggest challenge was starting with a floor that was concave. So here’s what we did: - Filled the floor with self-leveling concrete to get an even surface before installing a combination of carpet and tile. - Created two generous living areas from one large space by installing a double-sided media wall of custom…
- [Bathing in Luxury](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/bathing-in-luxury-pj-vj~173058)
  - Location: Calgary, AB
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: This stunning and unique bathroom started out with standard builder specs. All the mechanical aspects of the room had to be changed as the design required a different layout. Here are some of the other changes and elements we added: - The bathtub was 500 pounds, so we cut open and reinforced the floor under it. - We added an extra layer of soundproofing to the walls since a child’s room was next door. - Pressure-assist, low-flow toilet was installed, along with a steam shower with multi-body jet…
- [Redoing the Den](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/redoing-the-den-pj-vj~173079)
  - Location: Calgary, AB
  - Photos: 2
  - Description: To convert this bare-walled den into a workable office, we designed and created floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. The custom millwork provides so much storage space in the room, it can hold far more than just the office essentials.
