**Q: What Material is the Decking?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Is it teak or cedar?

**Q: Need help choosing paint color** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I just had both my front and back doors replaced and I need ideas for paint color for them.
The trim will be painted white (soon I hope-I've been trying for a year to get it done!) and I want something bright that will pop, but not over power the house. The trouble is I have 1966 orangish brick.  I thought something in the turquoise family would work and also be historically accurate.  I don't like the original turquoise I painted the old door after we moved in last year though.
What ideas do you have?  I prefer Behr paint but can also get Valspar.  
Winter is hitting us this week so I don't know when I will be able to paint but I would like to get the color chosen so the first warm day in the future I can paint. :)

A: This is a fabulous door style!  It deserves a color that says WOW!  I vote for a very rich turquoise, like Behr's Deep Blue Sea, \#540-D7.

**Q: Help make my cabin kitchen more cabiny** *(in Design Dilemma)*

This is my white kitchen in our cabin. They are laminate. Not happy with them but can't replace now. How can I make it more "cabiny".

A: Today's refacing techniques are much better than they used to be.  It is a viable option and more affordable than replacing cabinets, counters and fixtures.  There are examples here on Houzz, like this one:

If you are looking for an even cheaper solution, how about removing the doors on the upper cabinets and then framing the openings with a pretty trim?  Of course that means keeping your open shelves organized, but doing so would be pretty enough to distract the eye from the base cabinets, on which you could keep the doors, just replace the hardware with something more unique and attractive.

**Q: Sad exterior...how can I make it stand out more?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

This house looks much better in the photo.  It's asbestos siding, some rotting sills, carport and the front door goes to a screened in porch, and then there is another door to the house.  I want to rip out the two huge shrubs.  Thoughts please?  Open to painting it or residing with cedar shake...it's a Southern Maine beach town, very close to the water.  The windows look like they are missing something.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Also, there is a lighter purple house behind this one that can be seen from the road on the other side, and a whimsical ice cream shop and then dog store right across the st.  Thank you!

A: I highly recommend looking at walpolewoodworkers.com for some excellent ideas on decorative elements such as window trellises, window boxes and planters.  Also, a nice paint scheme idea would be to apply a lighter color to the siding, keep the white trim and paint the window frames only black.  Plant a cottage garden full of color in the front and back.  Consider a pergola-covered patio in the back also for cozy outdoor summer dining.

**Q: How to make buider blah exterior more attractive?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Garage dominates, front door receeds, no color (white vinyl siding) ugly windows.Interior is light and airy in lakefront golf course community! What to do?
