> Great Design, "its all in the details" and they do this very well. Mark and his people are some of the nicest I've ever had the pleasure to work with; They are very down to earth.

**★★★★★ — Boardwalk Builders, Feb. 2014**

> I’ve worked with Mark McInturff on multiple projects over the past 19 years, including custom homes, additions, major remodels and commercial projects. I enjoyed these experiences so much that I asked Mark to design our company office in 2006 and now have designs underway for a custom home. For each of these projects McInturff created a unique design, fit to the client and the setting. As a contractor and as a client I appreciate the meaningful spaces we have created, currently work in, and soon will be living in.

**★★★★★ — Carex: Garden Design by Carolyn Mullet, Nov. 2013**

> I hired McInturff Architects to do a small addition and partial renovation of my 1920's bungalow in a historic district. More than anything else after 30 years of living in a rather dark house, I wanted a light filled space with clean lines that connected to my garden and woodland beyond. Mark and Colleen Healey gave me everything I wanted plus so much more. I now have a beautiful & bright space which enriches my life daily in many ways. The views are wonderful both inside and out. The exterior materials are almost maintenance free. The fireplace wall in the garden room is not only a excellent composition but connects to the wood of the older part of the house. The exterior louvers on the windows cast lovely shadows on the interior walls and ceilings in all seasons. I couldn't be happier with the results. One more thing....Mark and Colleen managed the process through the Historic Preservation Commission so well that we (homeowner and architect) were commended for the design at the end. That alone is a reason to hire McInturff Architects if you want a modern addition in a historic district.

> Mark McInturff and Chris Boyd were nothing but helpful and professional throughout the entire renovation process. The took our house which was destroyed by a giant tree and made it into a work of art. We met on a weekly basis to complete the design process. They listened carefully to our ideas while keeping the project within their own design vision. During construction they kept a careful eye on the contractor and were great at keeping everyone happy and the project moving forward. I can't recommend Mark and his team enough!

 - Description: Built for a NASA engineer, a cellist and their small child, this project involves the renovation of and addition to a modest 1200 square foot cabin -- their primary, and only, residence -- in rural Maryland. The only additions were a stair replacing a ladder to the existing loft, and a proper entry, with closets. New built-ins provide the additional storage needed for an everyday minimalist life. The owners asked for a house with no furniture other than a small movable table for eating while sea…

 - Description: Sited on a wooden bluff overlooking the Potomac River, this house for a young family is organized around three pavilions — one for family living, one for sleeping, and one for a significant library of 40,000 books. The house is tucked behind a stone wall, presenting a low profile to the street, and steps down with the terrain to open the glazed pavilion ends to the wooded river view. - Description: This house for an active family of five is located in an historic district, and is a study in changing a large collection of small traditional rooms into to a small collection of large modern ones. Both parents work from home, and the integration of work and family life were key elements of the program. On the first floor, the interior was entirely opened up by removing all interior partitions and replacing them with cabinets housing the kitchen, storage, a centrally located home office cockpit,…

 - Description: This house, in one of Washington's close-in suburbs, was renovated in the late 1970s by Washington architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen. The timeless quality if Jacobsen's work has held up well, but the master bedroom suite had not been an important part of the original work and the new owners approached McInturff Architects to update that part of the house. In the new plan, the original bedroom has been left as a sitting area within a now-enlarged suite. The bedroom proper moved to a small addition a…

 - Description: This project, just completed, occupies an extraordinary location in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The immediate site forms a kind of saddle, on the intersection of a ridge on the East-West axis and a valley running North to South. The house runs along the ridge and bridges the valley, opening its long sides to the long North-South views. The pieces of the program — a 2 bedroom house, screened porch, pool terrace, painter’s studio, entry court and garage — are articulated and aligned alon…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Exterior Paint Color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi, beautiful work all around! I love the color choices and color contrasts. I was wondering if you could share the paint color used on this home? Thank you.

A: The exterior Siding is a black corrugated metal factory finish - were you referrying to another specific color?

**Q: Decking removable?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Is the wood decking installed above a waterproof membrane? If so, is it removable for maintenance, for instance, to clear out debris that might fall between the cracks? It appears to be separate from the roof. Thank you.

A: Yes, they are designed and constructed as individual pallets and can be lifted if necessary.

**Q: Tile dimensions** *(in Photo Questions)*

What are the tile dimensions here?

A: The tiles are nominally 12" x 24"

**Q: stair"rail" material** *(in Photo Questions)*

This is an absolutely gorgeous detail!! What material is your stair guardrail wall? Looks like acrylic solid surface?

A: Glad you like it. It is white-painted 1/4" steel plate. Because this house had to conform to the foundations of a previous, quite small house, every inch was important and this thin, strong material took less space than an standard stud wall. Although you might get a similar look with solid surfacing, it wouldn't have the structural integrity needed for this use.

**Q: love the sofa: who made it?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: That is the Mah Jong modular sofa by Roche Bobois. There are several other component pieces that aren't used here, so you can create an endless variety of configurations, colors and fabrics.

**Q: Floor** *(in Photo Questions)*

What kind of wood and stain?

A: It's white oak, treated with lye and with a custom mix of a tiny bit of white stain in the finish. Universal Floors developed the process over the years because we love the paleness and color of floors before they are finished, and this is the closest we can get to that look.
