What is the hearth made of, how thick & deep is, & how is it supported?

**Q: Lava Fireplace:  Brainstorm Session In Progress...** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Last October we bought a fixer-upper with a hugh fireplace two stories high.  The home was built in 1969, and it looks like the house was designed around the fireplace.  We are currently remodeling the entire house.  The floor plan is open on the upper level, and the lava fireplace is visible from both sides.  The previous owners painted it white, and we are considering soda blasting (see picture of test blast).  It will cost up $1200 to soda blast, front and back, upper level. The lava rock is naturally very dark; however, it does not look good painted. I am considering all options and would appreciate any feedback, suggestions, ideas.

A: You could have concrete wall panels cast to fit the fireplace floor to ceiling.  it would give you a modern clean look and you wouldn't have to demo the current fireplace. The panels would go right over the stone. The panels could be cast in any color you could image and they could be polished to any sheen.
