### Reviews

**★★★★★ — Yasmin Marin-McGrath, July 2026**

> The Harka team was great to work with. They listened to our needs and provide great suggestions based on their experiences. Our project was a complete remodel of our home. We are very pleased with the final layout, and look of our home.

**★★★★★ — Dan Steves, Aug. 2025**

> We would highly recommend Harka. Patrick, Sarah and Sara were great to work with, and we're thrilled with how it all turned out.

**★★★★★ — erinparksoleary, March 2023**

> We worked with Patrick and Brad at Harka on an ADU design project this year. We didn't end up reaching the build stage (for reasons that had nothing to do with them) but we would have been thrilled to see it come to fruition. The did a good job of taking our rough vision and fleshing it out into something really interesting, despite its necessarily small size. They brought both practicality and creativity to the project and I think the small space would have lived really well. I would highly recommend them.

**Comment from Harka Architecture:**

> We enjoyed working with you on your project and hope you will get in touch if you need us in the future. We're here for you!

**★★★★★ — Rebecca S, Feb. 2023**

> We consulted with Harka on a remodel, specifically looking for advice on energy efficient window choices and ERVs. Patrick’s knowledge for products and technology was current, accurate, and took into account our budget. We LOVED working with Patrick on this small consultation, and hope to work with Harka in the future for a guesthouse buildout, if we’re so lucky. :) Cannot recommend him enough!!!

**Comment from Harka Architecture:**

> We hope to work with you again too! We appreciate the kind words and love having the opportunity to share information about low-carbon, low-toxicity products and building methods with our clients. Looking forward to your next project!

**★★★★★ — HU-143467898, Oct. 2022**

> This was our first venture into retail, so the choice of architectural firms was critical. We chose Harka not only because of their experience, but because they seemed to want to work in partnership with us, instead of just handing us a plan and moving on to the next project. Patrick and the other great folks at Harka were tremendous. They helped us in every way, not only with our general store layout, but also in planning foot traffic, signage, planning for security issues and more, including not only how the customer would see the store, but also making a design that was the most efficient for us operationally, and, of course, keeping our budget on track. It was a great working relationship, and would hire them again should the situation arise!

**★★★★★ — HU-391737804, Feb. 2021**

> Patrick is so great to work with and very helpful. He has been helping me throughout many different projects over the last 3 years. Very professional company and highly recommend!

**★★★★★ — HU-522713722, Feb. 2021**

> Harka Architecture did an awesome job on my project. The Harka team was very prompt with responding to emails and they got the job done quick.

**★★★★★ — killadoonjen66, Jan. 2021**

> We feel so fortunate to have found Patrick and his crew at Harka and couldn’t be happier with their design of our off-grid cabin. We lost the original cabin, built by hippies in the 70s, to a wildfire. We loved that place and, while small, it left big shoes to fill. Patrick considered the cabin’s place on the landscape and integrated the elements into the design - the prevailing winds, the movement of the sun, potential snowfall, and rainfall. He maximized our views and natural light while making sure we had a building envelope that would keep us comfortable in the bitter cold of winter and the scorching heat of summer. The materials he selected were as sustainable and fire resistant as our budget would allow. He came to the table with creative ideas and, importantly, he listened.

**Comment from Harka Architecture:**

> We of course loved working with you both. We are so happy with the results and that we able to get it done on budget. A beautiful structure on a beautiful site, and you did an amazing job decorating it!

**★★★★★ — Valerie Thorsen, Aug. 2020**

> We worked with Harka on a major remodel that retained only our basement walls and the foundation, and rebuilt the main floor with a new master suite above.
>
> Our home is in an established neighborhood that was built in the 1950s, and it was important to us that the new structure did not clash with the neighborhood, but also exhibited a modern design. Additionally, we were height limited by CC&Rs, and we needed to stay within the existing footprint due to our lot size. Harka worked within these constraints and surpassed all of our expectations.
>
> Harka's design maximizes the views of Puget Sound provided by our lot, while implementing appealing and efficient architecture that includes exactly the right amount of shading. We couldn't be happier with the results Harka delivered, and we routinely talk to each other about how much we love our new space.

**Comment from Harka Architecture:**

> This stands as one of our proudest projects. We enjoyed the challenge of making it fit snugly into the constraints of the site. You guys were a pleasure to work with. Thank you for trusting us!

**★★★★★ — HU-969919166, Nov. 2019**

> We needed to remodel our two story house to make it accessible for a family member newly in a wheelchair. Patrick was amazingly creative in figuring out where to put an elevator, take out walls, and reconfigure the kitchen. Tammy worked with us tirelessly on various options for the kitchen layout as well as all the other details of the project. When there were inevitable and unexpected complications with construction along the way, they were instrumental in figuring out solutions. They were immediately responsive, thoughtful, and a pleasure to work with. Everything was done in the most professional manner. Our house looks amazing with a new elevator and a new floor plan that looks like it was built that way in the beginning. I can't recommend them highly enough.

**Comment from Harka Architecture:**

> We enjoyed working with you both. We were happy to make a true difference in the life of your family member. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!

**★★★★★ — Becky Luening, Nov. 2019**

> I highly recommend Harka for architectural services. They designed our ADU apartment addition (an upstairs unit built onto our garage), and whenever I show people the space, the first thing they say upon entering is, "Wow...this is really nice!" I ran into budget issues that I blame mainly on my own naivety going in to this project, but having learned from experience, if I was going to do another project like this, I would definitely hire the Harka team again. They do great design work, they are professional, friendly, good communicators, and especially knowledgeable when it comes to energy-saving features and materials.

**Comment from Harka Architecture:**

> Becky, thank you so much. We loved working with you, too. The fact that you cared as much as we did about the sustainable aspects of the job made it super fun. So if you do it again, we would love to be part of your team.

**★★★★★ — Aaron Head, Oct. 2019**

> Patrick, Tammy, and the crew at Harka did an awesome job for us on our overwhelming project!
> They helped with every aspect of our process, had answers for everything, and helped guide us in the right direction. I really appreciated that they were always available and always had a good solution for any issue that would come up! You're in good hands with this crew of good people!

**Comment from Harka Architecture:**

> Thank you, Aaron! It was a delight working with you and helping craft a design to accommodate a long-term plan for your place. It is a lot of work being hands-on for your own home’s remodel, and we’re glad Harka could ease that stress by helping problem solve as needed. And we’re especially thrilled at your excellent taste in furnishings; it really makes your home pop!

  - Description: When the owners approached us about building an ADU on their property, the design immediately considered adding a second story to their approximately 800 square foot garage to mitigate the environmental footprint, rather than tearing down and constructing with all new materials. With minor structural upgrades, we were able to remove the existing roof and add a new second floor above the garage with a vaulted ceiling. The remodel was also an opportunity to increase functionality of the oversized…

  - Description: As the population of Portland increases, many people are looking for creative solutions to add density while preserving the character of the historic single-family neighborhoods that comprise the majority of Portland’s East side. The client for this new residence had an existing 1909 house on a corner lot near NE Killingsworth St and NE Alberta St with a generous backyard that they wanted to partition into a separate lot for a new single-family residence without demolishing the existing home. Th…

  - Description: For this project located in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood, the goal was to expand the exterior covered patio and to create a more seamless indoor / outdoor connection from the kitchen while maintaining the architectural style of the home. Outside we reused existing stainless steel cabinets for the outdoor kitchen, added large skylights and specified durable exterior materials designed for heavy use. On the interior, we wanted to provide a more functional kitchen with more natural light, counterspac…

  - Description: This remodel involved relocating the kitchen in an existing home in order to create a strong indoor-outdoor connection through the use of a large, fully-glazed folding door and a new patio with a translucent cover. The old layout required walking through the media room or kitchen to get to the living room and backyard. The new layout moves the kitchen and dining area to face the backyard and tucks the media room into the old kitchen space, creating an open flow between the living, dining, and ki…

  - Description: This 1905 home received a full remodel with new finishes and a master suite addition. The kitchen and dining room were opened up and an open-riser stair was added for accessing the newly finished attic. Low storage in the attic allows the sleeping area to catch views out the large windows of dormer addition, while also filtering natural light down the open stairwell to the living space below. Outdoor spaces were important to the design and the house now maximizes views out and connections to nat…

  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 44
  - Description: This modest 360 square foot addition creates three new master suites, a laundry room, and a physical connection to the backyard of this compact property. Instead of building up to create new living space, this design expanded downward to maintain the existing neighborhood scale of the 1920s home. Project scope included an extensive driveway excavation which not only brought daylight into the new basement living spaces, but also created usable outdoor gathering spaces. Furthermore, a massive mult…

  - Location: Portland, OR

  - Description: This project redeveloped an existing single-family property with a focus on communal living for multiple dwelling spaces facing a shared outdoor courtyard with gardens. The original 1880s home on site was in disrepair and could not be saved, however the structure’s old wood was salvaged and used throughout in detailing of the new spaces. The new design pays homage to the old house by fitting into the existing fabric and scale of the neighborhood while providing increased density. The spaces are…

The entire ground floor is made ADA accessible, including roll-in shower and room for a wheelchair to maneuver in all spaces. The curennt remodel divided the 3,250 square foot space into a retail space flanked by two apartments. The A-frame roof from the original 1920s structure was removed and a much-needed outdoor area was added with a south-facing deck. - Description: This 1933 home featured a previously converted garage addition that disrupted the flow of the house and did not match the rest of the exterior. The interior layout felt cramped and the rooms lacked flow and connection. The new layout creates a more open floor plan while retaining the historic character and detailing of the home. The remodel raises the floor of the addition and enlarges its footprint to match the rest of the house and create a cohesive exterior facade. On the interior, the kitche…
