We had hired a contractor to remodel our kitchen and family room and gotten fairly far along the planning process, but I did need a designer to give a little direction in picking some of the colors and finishes. Walls are a pale gray and debating on what color to paint mantle and shelf to left of fireplace (I'm thinking white? Shelf is wooden but primed right now). Also, wanting to possibly paint the orange ceramic tiles...is this even possible? Not sure what kind of paint to use....Carpet will be slate gray. A: I think your idea for painting the mantel/shelf white is great. A nice bright white would pop and tie things together nicely. I agree with Patricia that the balance in the room is off, but if you aren't up for removing the shelving you can balance the room with a large plant and perhaps some larger decorative pots/vases or maybe even a freestanding bookcase. Good luck! **Q: Entry way design** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello everyone. I am still fresh into moving and renovating my new home. I have been stuck on how to create a warm, inviting, simple space for my entry way. The wall colors will be white dove BM and the dark trim and floors are remaining the same. I prefer traditional/ transitional styles. What size and shape rug ? What furniture pieces ? Table ? Chair ? A: It looks like you could get away with an 6' or 7' square rug in your entry way. I would recommend a round table to put in the center of the entry way with a nice floral arrangements and a decorative bowl or basket. This would be a great place to catch keys and mail when entering your home. The wall directly adjacent to the door would be a nice place for a beautiful piece of artwork. A pair of wingback chairs would be perfect on the 10'10" wall with a grouping of baskets etc in between or perhaps even a coat rack.
