> Penny built our very modern custom designed (Chicago architect) home located in Montana. A challenging project: SIPS paneling, very clean finishes (can't cover the mistakes with trim) and challenges with scheduling - all the subs are over committed - but we are really happy with the end result. Penny knows her stuff, she's honest, she cares about the result and she puts the time in to get the job done.

> It is always a pleasure to work for Penny Lane Home Builders. As a sub-contractor, I always look forward to Penny's projects. My company knows we will find a clean, well organized job-site, and quick answers to any questions we might have.

**★★★★★ — Page Huyette Montana Real Estate, Dec. 2015**

> Penny Lane differentiates themselves from other southwestern Montana builders in several ways. They offer several different approaches to home building, and are always willing to tailor their services to meet each client's needs.
>
> I've worked with Penny both as a real estate agent utilizing construction services and as a designer. Penny Lane is one of my top go-to contractors and I recommend their work.

**★★★★★ — Kerry Hatcher, Dec. 2015**

> In 2014, after interviewing nearly 10 builders we decided to go with Penny. Our project was challenging on multiple fronts, to start off with we had to satisfy two HOA-DRB's and one of them was extremely difficult to satisfy. Secondly, there were budgetary and design challenges that together we tackled. Our Mantra was "cool on a budget." Not only did we conquer the review process but also the budget and design issues. We broke ground in June of 14 and moved in to our home in April of 2015. We could not be more satisfied with the finished product. Certainly, like many projects, you have hiccups and ours was no exception but Penny kept her focus, positive attitude and creative ideas which ultimately enabled us to build something that other builders could not have. We truly have an original that we credit Penny for building. From the sketches on paper to the finished product - I don't think either of us envisioned a more satisfying completion. Thanks much! We highly highly recommend.

> Penny Lane Home Builders is nothing short of extraordinary. The owner, Ms. Murray, is very professional and has a team of dedicated craftsman ready to tackle just about any project. We recently hired her firm to do a basement/bedroom remodel. There were lots of challenges, but the skilled laborers who work for her were steady, experienced, and dedicated to the project at hand. We never had to call Penny to ask "when is your carpenter going to show up?" Her team of professionals were always on time, kept a clean worksite, and didn't waste time going to and from the hardware store for materials. It always seemed like they put in a full days work. The project was completed on time and on budget. We couldn't be happier. We plan to use her firm again to do a remodel of the mud room off of our kitchen.

**Comment from Penny Lane Home Builders, LLC:**

> Thank you so much for your kind words! We really appreciate it and can't wait to do the next project!

**★★★★★ — Mayville Landscaping Inc., Feb. 2015**

> My wife Karen and I as Landscape design and construction professionals with Mayville Landscaping have the opportunity to work with many architects and professional builders. We have had the pleasure to work with Penny Lane Builders for several years on several projects to include her personal residence. I consider Penny one of best design build contractors in the Gallatin Valley. Penny's attention to detail both interior and exterior, creative and clever design elements, craftsmanship and professionalism are only dwarfed by her tireless work ethic. I know that when Penny calls it will be a fun and interesting project. I highly recommend as a professional.

**Comment from Penny Lane Home Builders, LLC:**

> We love working with you too! A house does not become a home until the curb-appeal and landscaping is in place and you guys NEVER disappoint! Thanks for your kind words!

**★★★★★ — aokandtoad, Nov. 2014**

> I am a subcontractor that installed a radiant heating and solar system on a home in which Penny was the General Contractor on an energy efficient, tight ,well-built house. She has a very solid technical understanding of the building process, and is the kind of person that works toward solutions. As a subcontractor it helps that she is very responsive via text, email, and phone calls - which makes it easy to coordinate schedules and plan phases of work. I would highly recommend hiring her.

**Comment from Penny Lane Home Builders, LLC:**

> Thank you so much for your kind words! Can't wait to do more installs together!

**★★★★★ — Sustainable Lumber Company, Oct. 2014**

> We provided a custom beetle kill pine floor for Penny Lane Home Builders, the final outcome was truly amazing.
>
> The quality, craftsmanship, creativity, and customer care was outstanding. The hidden rooms in the house are one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. What a fun place for kids.
>
> I'd highly recommend Penny Lane Builders to any home owner.

> As owner/operator of Mount Ellis Paint I have had the pleasure of working for Penny on a number of different occasions be it remodels or new construction. She is a contractor dedicated to her clients, willing to go the extra mile with personal service.

**Comment from Penny Lane Home Builders, LLC:**

> Thanks so much for the kind words! We feel the same way about you and your dedication!

**★★★★★ — jannetborrmann, March 2014**

> Penny Murray built us small bathroom in our house to begin with. She was helpful, stayed on budget and listened to our wishes so when it came to building a complete new house, she was one of the local builders we approached. Not only was she able to translate our vision into designs, savings us the costs of an expensive architect, but with her network of sub-contractors, engineers and vendors, she built our dream-home for us too and we couldn't be happier with the end-result. She can take you from concept to finished build, all while staying on budget. We're truly impressed! I hope she'll post a portfolio of the finished project as our 'rustic but modern barn' is truly inspirational.

**Comment from Penny Lane Home Builders, LLC:**

> We sure loved building it! Thanks so much for your kind words!

**★★★★★ — Susan Curtis Kitchens, Nov. 2013**

> It’s always a great experience working with Penny on a project due to her thoughtful attention. Penny is very involved start to finish and truly helps her clients create a space that is uniquely theirs and is environmentally friendly. She’s very conscientious as a team player and ensures that her client’s needs will be met now and for years to come.

**Comment from Penny Lane Home Builders, LLC:**

> Susan, we always love working with you too! You manage to meet every clients need every time, regardless of budget! Thanks so much for your kind words!

  - Location: Anaconda, MT
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: This home was built on a beautiful Montana Lake with expansive views to the South and West. With dark ornate cabinetry, high ceilings and multiple floor surfaces it was dated, dark and too formal for the homeowners. We confined our efforts to the main level concentrating on the kitchen and living spaces, along with the primary bedroom and ensuite. A larger, more functional, and modern style kitchen with Sub-Zero and Viking appliances was the primary goal for the homeowners. Removing the wall and…
- [Bitterroot Barn](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/bitterroot-barn-pj-vj~7585344)
  - Location: Bozeman, MT
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: This home was designed and built for a mother and daughter who were building a home to age-in-place and to welcome extended family for longer visits. The site sloped steeply to the northwest and views of the valley and sunsets. The barn shape was our inspiration. We angled the structure for the views with a walk-out lower level guest suite and a patio. The main floor living quarters is on one level with an enormous deck and easy access to the driveway and garage. French Country was the theme wit…

  - Description: The design of this home was driven by its spectacular location with views of the entire valley and three mountain ranges. Rolling terrain, view shed restrictions, sun patterns and prevailing winds all impacted room placement and window patterns. The home turns away from the winds and towards the views, mirroring the benchtop topography and nestling into the landscape. The serendipitous discoveries of 10’ fir doors and curved trusses, all salvaged from local projects added height and curves to th…

  - Description: This gem of a home was designed by homeowner/architect Eric Vollmer. It is nestled in a traditional neighborhood with a deep yard and views to the east and west. Strategic window placement captures light and frames views while providing privacy from the next door neighbors. The second floor maximizes the volumes created by the roofline in vaulted spaces and loft areas. Four skylights illuminate the ‘Nordic Modern’ finishes and bring daylight deep into the house and the stairwell with interior op…

  - Location: Bozeman, MT
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: My clients bought a 15 acre property with river frontage in the Manhattan area of Montana. It came with a 20 year old pole barn structure. The roof had partially come off and it was in quite a state. We had not expected to rescue it, but once we got inside, it seemed structurally sound so the decision was made to turn it into a bunkhouse for guests plus build a workshop. We added new posts and a concrete foundation to make it all solid and set to work. It had no floors, no services whatsoever an…

  - Location: Bozeman, MT
  - Photos: 55
  - Description: This home was an 80's tri-level + basement in a fantastic location. Homeowners loved the property and the school district so they lived with the home's shortcomings for years. As the design for the remodel evolved it became apparent that the whole house would be razed to make way for the new plan on the existing foundation. We added guest quarters and an office above the garage with a mudroom/pantry/powder room behind the garage. The main living/dining/kitchen opened up in height and out to the…

  - Description: Designed by Chicago architect Cathy Osika, this home was designed for a busy international couple as their family getaway and retirement home in the mountains. Energy efficiency and function were paramount requirements along with the necessity of showcasing their extensive collection of Asian and mid-century art. The 3-story bookcase is a major focal point and organizing feature of the plan and the staircase follows it down thru the home. It sets the tone by framing the owners’ art collection, l…

  - Description: This custom home was designed for an active retired couple moving to Bozeman. They purchased a lot with amazing views in a great neighborhood at the base of the mountains. I designed the home to fit into the site, capitalizing on the views and the best orientation for solar gain and energy efficiency. Helping the clients through a neighborhood variance process and building a road was also part of the project. The spaces are warm, open and inviting and the views are framed from each space. The ro…

  - Description: A water damaged basement is turned into functional spaces and solutions for a family on a budget! Ducts were rerouted, measures to combat radon put in place, heating and window wells added, flooring replaced and walls created. The result is a much needed teenage bedroom and a reading nook and work-out area. The dividing wall was built out of panel doors so the space can become one large space again in the future if needed.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Where did you purchase the frosted glass striped shower doors? Thanks.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Interested in the shower doors

A: I believe it was Lowes, from 2013

**Q: Front door for my house - going from old red door to more modern** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello -
We need to replace our front door due to functional issues, but while we're at it we want to go with something that is a bit more modern. We are also planning on painting our house a bit of a lighter color and darkening the shutters.
Anyhow, attached is a picture of our house. We want to replace the door with something in a darker maple stained color with some windows and sidelights as well. We plan to keep the framing around the door.

The door style and sidelight style we really like is from thermatru in the link below (their high quality brand), but in more of a dark maple color. Does this work? What do people think?
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/79235274684147194/

A: Your home is in a Colonial style -- especially with the ornate frame around the door-- the door you are considering is a Craftsman style. Consider going very dark and glossy -- navy, hunter, or black whichever will go with the new shutter color. Have fun with it!

**Q: Refresh glass block and bath look without changing plumbing** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi all. I am fixing this up for a rental. I will have luxy plank on the floors and a new (Ikea Godmorgon in either white or oak).

I want to keep my costs down and was wondering if anyone had ideas for changing out the tile in the glass block. We will be cleaning and re-grouting as needed.

I'd love to move the toilet, but I think doing that would add a lot to the cost. I am going to rent this out and may do a bigger overhaul in a few years, so just looking for some lower cost ideas to make it cleaner and brighter.

A: If you end up replacing the tile -- definitely keep the glass block -- consider a white 'long subway' in a stacked configuration and a fun shape on the floor in a color that pops.

**Q: what is the dimensions of the second floor?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Also what size are the knee walls?

A: Dimensions are about 19'w x 33' long (to the back wall with the window), there is a stair in the back right corner. The knee wall is about 2' high.

**Q: countertop?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the countertop here?

A: These are Canyon Creek cabinets in Rustic Alder species with a Chicory stain and Licorice glaze.

**Q: Please share the source for the flanges used for the stair railing** *(in Photo Questions)*

I am looking to do something similar for my outdoors deck stairs but cannot find the correct angle fittings to go between the 6x6 stair posts. Appreciate any help you can provide.

A: The fittings for these railings is from Kee Klamp. https://www.simplifiedbuilding.com/
