It could also be an issue with moisture trapped between coats. To fix this issue, you need to remove all the peeling/blistering/bubbling paint from the surface by scuff sanding and if need be, lightly scraping with a putty knife. Once the surface is free from all peeling/blistering/bubbling paint, you need to clean with a TSP substitute or a mild household cleaner, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. **Q: how to refinish kitchen cabinets** *(in Design Dilemma)* We want to paint our kitchen cabinets which now have a very worn dark stain finish. We heard that there were kits available to do this. A: Please be advised that in regards to primer consistency, primers don't have to be opaque to do it's job. It's very common for people to look for a 'blanket of white' primer coating, but it's not specifically relevant. It's one of the most common misunderstandings. The dark stain finish might not be completely covered with your primer coats so we recommend you topcoat with your desired paint. A primer can block colors or stains from bleeding through, but it doesn't have it hide at all. **Q: Main upstairs Bathroom** *(in Before & After)* I am currently working on a bathroom in my new home. The house was a foreclosure sale, and for those of you that have had exposure to these homes , you know the kind of work the bank does to get it ready for sale. The main bath on the second floor was painted by the bank in a cheap flat paint. Apparently they never primed the walls first because the top coat is peeling (almost resembles snake skin) and revealing this hideous olive green and royal blue under paint. Because this is in a well used bathroom. I have had to remove as much as possible by scraping and then using Kilz(original oil base) to prime it. I recommend using a fan and doing this on a day that you can open the windows, I have been a bit lightheaded due to the fumes:) After the first coat dries I will then patch and apply a light coat of spackle to the areas that I have scraped to give the walls a smooth finish. A: When an isolated area fails, there's a reason. There is contamination. If there was something wrong with the primer or paint, it would fail everywhere. Chances are, it's something that didn't get adequately cleaned prior to painting (it may have appeared clean), like hairspray, soap scum, bathroom cleaner residue, or something like that. If you can brush off any remaining flakes and clean with a cleaner that doesn't leave a residue (ammonia & water or alcohol), you should be able to recoat with the primer & paint (maybe just the paint). J8 Popcorn was renamed Chenin Blanc in 2006 and was assigned color number E621 in 2010. Thanks! **Q: Paint colors to spruce up old house** *(in Design Dilemma)* We bought this 1941 home and have put most of our budget into systems- new plumbing, furnace, roof etc. So now I am going to have the kitchen and dining room painted to spruce them up a bit. I am working with the existing elements, not planning to make any changes to countertops etc until later. First issue- the wallpaper mural in the dining room is going to stay, as my husband really likes it and I can live with it. The pictures are a little off, color wise, but it is dark green and lighter green on a (somewhat yellowed) pale beige background. (the picture makes it look as though there are some pink tones, and this is incorrect.) I want to paint one color below the chair rail and one above. I am leaning toward a very dark green below, but stuck on what to do above. I want there to be a good amount of contrast between the two colors. Also coming into play is the kitchen right next to it. I want the colors in the two rooms to look good next to each other, as you look from one room into the other. I want to make the light honey color of the cabinets look good and stand out, and also there is a dark green stripe going all the way around the edge of the countertops. Also there is an architectural detail at the above the cabinets that I want to highlight, not sure but I think I will do this and the ceiling white. A: Hello Lynn, Before you start any paint project, you want to ensure that the surface is clean, dry, and dull. When painting over finished paneling, prep is a very important first step. First, rough up the surface of the paneling with a pole sander that has been fitted with a sanding screen (rather than paper). Next, apply an interior oil-based undercoat primer like KILZ Original. It is important not to use a latex base because it would allow moisture to get underneath the paint, causing the paneling to swell and mildew to grow. For the grooves in the paneling, use spackle to fill in gaps and allow it to dry about two hours before sanding. Finish the wall with another coat of oil-based sealer and allow it to dry. Now the surface can be treated like drywall so you can proceed with applying your preferred top coat. You can purchase KILZ Original at your local Home Depot store! I hope that helps.
