In these tumultuous times, our clients are calling on us to examine the work from exacting points of view. Issues of overall building size, efficient use of space, energy and materials are of principal importance.

We have found that by spending slightly more of our budgets on the sophistication of the building envelope, the windows, the construction methods, the insulation and the detailing, we can radically reduce the amount of energy required to condition spaces.

Clients have always come to us with an appreciation of the beauty of what we do. Now we can offer another layer in the capacity of architecture to influence the quality of our lives.

Coupling efficiency with architectural presence would very well describe what our work has become.

**★★★★★ — Paul DeBell, Aug. 2016**

> My wife and I owned a cottage on a small lot that was in my family for 70 years. It had been flooded too often, and we had no choice but to rebuild. We had seen examples of Craig's aesthetic in our neighborhood and decided to call him. We began with a very basic design to use as a summer weekend cottage to get out of New York City. As the project progressed, however, we fell in love with the space that he created and the way the light played on the inside. The back deck captured the beautiful trees in the backyard that I had watched grow and the front looked down the street onto the Long Island Sound. He created a space that we enjoy being in. It is modern while at the same time fitting into a street where all the other homes are very traditional. Neighbors accept it. Craig worked very hard to balance our evolving desire to upgrade our home as we loved it more and more with the need to be cost conscious at the same time.

**★★★★★ — John Hoffmann, June 2016**

> Craig Newick, Newick Architects designed a full service bar for me at my home. Total cost: between 50,000 and 100,000 dollars. It is a contemporary marvel made of oak, stainless steel and granite. His firm previously designed a replacement deck for my home, constructed with ipe and stainless steel elements. Craig is a very talented designer, and he has introduced design elements into these two projects that I don't think I would have imagined. I look forward to working with him on future projects and recommend him highly.

**★★★★★ — Jeff Carter, June 2016**

> I have worked with Newick Architects for the past 10 years. Craig's eye for detail is always presenting something that you did not expect. It could be the placement of the trim or how the light moves across the room. Once you have worked with this firm you will be entering your project to see what detail presents itself next. What ever it is your eye will be pleased.

**★★★★★ — magnaproconstruction, March 2016**

> Caig Newick is a pleasure to work with, as his high end design and knowledge about architecture as well as construction are super professional, constructive and make a great product.

**★★★★★ — amyjostar, Jan. 2016**

> I loved working with Craig. First he has an amazing sensibility. His style is unique, but simple and totally accessible. He's quick with an idea and even faster with solutions. He was very responsive whenever I needed to talk to him and followed through until the very last detail was complete. I would absolutely use him the next time we are lucky enough to have a project so I'm sure it goes without saying that I highly recommend him as well!

**★★★★★ — lapalombara, Sept. 2015**

> His work is characterized by concise intelligence. It is well thought out, functional, and most importantly, aesthetically pleasing down to the finest detail. He listens carefully to his clients needs. A particular strength is his extensive knowledge, interest, and use of various materials.
>
> I have recommended him to several friends. All have been thoroughly satisfied with his understanding of the project and its resolution.

> I engaged Newick Architects to design the renovation and reconstruction of my home. I believe it was a very good client/architect relationship. Additionally, we partnered with a contractor of my choice and it became a fruitful 3-way collaboration. (In fact, the architect and contractor have worked together on numerous projects subsequent to my introduction.)
> I researched over 60 architects before selecting Newick Architects, and did so because I believed we shared an aesthetic sensibility, which was borne out by the project's successful fruition.

  - Location: Branford, CT

  - Description: The DeBell Beach House Fifth Avenue Branford, Connecticut The owner of this house has been coming to the site for summers since 1945. There was a cottage existing on the site when we came to the project. During hurricane Sandy there were six feet of water in the yard – three feet in the house. It was apparent that we would have to rebuild the house to FEMA standards above base flood elevation. This is a summer cottage for the most part and the goal at the outset was to build an 1800 square foot…

  - Description: This is the master bath in a town house. The long and narrow room was divided into separate areas using a variety of white materials, marble, opaque glass tile, transparent glass tile, solid surface resin, translucent glass and paint. Most of the lights are tucked up into recesses in the joints between wall and ceiling. None of the parts quite touch each other. The effect is one of light captured in the architecture. The source of light and the source of design complexity are the same.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Blinds** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi there,

I was just wondering what type of blind you have used here? Love the seamless look, Does the builder need to create block work for this? Do they block out the light well?

Many thanks,

Karen

A: Karen: Even though you can not see it here, there is a concealed roller blind in a pocket above the windows. there is quite a bit more than just blocking. Blocking is substantial though because this is a big opening and the shade and its loads are quite heavy.

**Q: Love this desk. Is it custom built? If not, where is it from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: On second thought looking at this - not Perriand - "school of" - influenced by.

**Q: Cabinet company and color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

We are looking for this pale blue-y grey. Thank you!

A: Its really a tile job. terrazzo companies lay down terrazzo in liquid form and then polish it in place. you should chedk with the manufacturer for the thickness.

**Q: who makes the the glass wall/doors?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: These are by Arcadia.

**Q: Is the floor terazzo? Let would love to know about it color etc** *(in Photo Questions)*

Is this a terazzo floor? I love it. What is the color?

A: The cabinet was designed by us and made by a furniture maker. It is actually recessed in the wall to add the thickness of the wall to the available depth of the cabinet.
I am sure we could arrange to have one made for you if you like.
