This was an extraordinary undertaking to request a modern kitchen in my 1930’s home on Cape Cod. Kitchen walls were blown out, the back of the house went from a single door and two windows to three beautiful custom French doors spilling onto a deck that takes in the beautiful vista. The Lyons-Archer Kitchen master designer, Tina Klucsik, made it all happen. Seamless integration from interior to the exterior, Tina suggested concepts I simply couldn’t imagine myself. Your opinions please!!** *(in Kitchens)* We are trying to decide whether to do pendants or cans over the island (and if pendants how many.) We currently have 6-6 inch cans in the kitchen as well as a can over the sink and a light fixture over the kitchen table. We are either going to add 4 inch cans or pendants over the island. While I like the concept of pendants, I am worried it will be busy in the kitchen with too many things hanging from the ceiling. (I have never had pendants before.) The can lights we have now are generally sufficient in terms of light, so the pendants will be more for decoration. Here is a photo of the kitchen floorpan I have drawn circles where the cans will be. This is the floorpan of the downstairs. This is a picture of old kitchen. New kitchen will look different, but layout is essentially the same -- island will be a little bigger and have three seats at the end. The cans that are kind of over the island in this photo have been moved to the right. We have not yet chosen a new light fixture for over the table. (My kitchen decorator tells me the fixture we have now doesn't match anything!) Thanks much for your help! A: The pendant style is Cody Mini-Stem Pendant, from House of Antique Hardware. Good luck on your renovation. **Q: Recessed light placement?? Also, advice on size and type~** *(in Design Dilemma)* I need help as to what type and size of recessed lights for my new kitchen. Also, not sure how many I need, not looking for bright lights, I use a lot of dimmers. Pendants will go over Island, will have a 12" overhang. Kitchen is open to dining room, plan on a chandelier in center of room. A: Consider using the Halo 6 in. Aluminum recessed lights; if this is a kitchen make-over, ensure they are appropriate for remodeling projects. You may want to use 5-6 recessed lights in this area, on dimmers. Think about placing one in front of the sink, one in the general area of the range, one near the lazy susan, one near the living room/kitchen wall and one where you will be entering the kitchen, so that you can turn it on at nightime for visibility. Use a warm color temperature to prevent stark lighting. **Q: HELP? ARE YOU GOOD WITH TILE QUESTIONS?** *(in Design Dilemma)* HI GUYS, DOING A HOUSE RESTORATION AND LOOKING FOR A HIGH QUALITY 1" OFF-WHITE HEX TILE THAT IS A LITTLE BIT THICKER THAN HOME DEPOT. CAN'T FIND THEM ANYWHERE. MAYBE THEY DON'T EXIST. A: Is this for a shower floor or wall application? **Q: Counter top dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have an all white kitchen in the house that we just bought that has gray and brown and cream swirl type granite countertops. However everything else in my house or warm tones I have like antique gold balls in the great room that open up to the kitchen and all of my furniture is like browns and antique looking gold tones. I feel like the kitchen in the great room or fighting with one another because the color schemes don't go what color countertop could I put in my kitchen that would flow with the great room because they are sort of open to one another. Btw I'm not keeping those blue walls either. I'm changing them to malabar by sherwins. I just need a suggestion on counters ??? A: Perhaps you can work with the lighting in your kitchen, as thermofoil can't be painted. You may want to consider adding warm lighting, to soften the pure white against your warm decorating style. Hope this helps! **Q: Kitchen pulls for cabinets and drawers** *(in Design Dilemma)* What is difference in stainless and brushed nickel? I do not wan to have to polish. I do want it to look nice with stainless appliances. A: Take a look at the Top Knobs website for brushed nickel-finished hardware. I use them when clients want to match their stainless steel appliances. Brushed nickel finishes are warmer in appearance than stainless, and resist fingerprints better than stainless because of this feature. Plus, you can order a free sample or two from Top Knobs to see how the hardware will look in your kitchen. **Q: Any suggestions for replacing the fluorescent lights in our kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I like recessed lighting but my husband doesn't want to tear the sheet rock up - fluorescent light does give much needed light, but is ugly - any suggestions?
