## Selected projects

- [Das Swartzenreader Haus - Winchester, Virginia](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/das-swartzenreader-haus-winchester-virginia-pj-vj~846983)
  - Location: Winchester, VA
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: This house in Winchester, Virginia was originally built in 1968. It had a 4/12 gable roof, a boxy, conventional floor plan, and a second floor that cantilevered two feet past the first floor. The house sat on the top of a very steep hill, on a small corner lot, within an established neighborhood. Although the house had an amazing view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, there was virtually no way to appreciate it through the minimal number of small windows. The lot dropped 30 feet within its 100-foot d…
- [Loft Upon Cork - Shenandoah Valley, Virginia](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/loft-upon-cork-shenandoah-valley-virginia-pj-vj~847083)
  - Location: Winchester, VA
  - Photos: 26
  - Description: This project is the comprehensive renovation of, and small addition to, a vernacular Victorian house. The house was built in the late 1800’s, and is located in a downtown historic district. The house was originally four apartments, and is now converted into two. The first floor apartment is designed to be a caretakers residence. The second floor is for our client, who collects art, scientific oddities, and rare books. He wanted his new loft apartment to function as a salon and private museum. Th…
- [GoldenEye - Bayse, Virginia](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/goldeneye-bayse-virginia-pj-vj~846878)
  - Location: Basye, VA
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: On a steep mountainside in the Appalachian Mountains, a modern lair will be created. The approach road curves in and out, following the mountain’s topography. The road affords, and then takes away, views of the sleek, modern box through the trees and around the topography. Three shed volumes of the house cling to the side of the mountain. As allowed by the steep slope of the landscape, the three volumes are simultaneously carved into the mountain, and also become a tree house above the mountain…
- [Songbird Lane - Frederick County, Virginia](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/songbird-lane-frederick-county-virginia-pj-vj~847190)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: This house was originally a two story, nondescript, 1970’s “farmhouse” with no architectural merit, clad in baby blue vinyl siding. The house had mold problems, and, consequently, its inhabitants had respiratory issues. Despite its pedestrian character and inadequate size, the house did have one thing going for it—it sat on the right place on its site, within a ring of mature trees. Because of its siting, and because the owners were concerned about conserving natural resources, a decision was ma…
- [Silver Spring Bungalow - Silver Spring, Maryland](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/silver-spring-bungalow-silver-spring-maryland-pj-vj~847359)
  - Location: Silver Spring, MD
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: This small bungalow in Silver Spring, Maryland was built in 1923. It’s located in a neighborhood of similarly scaled, Sears style kit houses. For several decades, the bungalow had been two apartments (one upstairs, one down). As a result, the rear of the house was a collection of small, enclosed, former back porches. The low pitched rear roofline shut the house down to the large back yard. Because there were two front doors to the apartments, the renovation involved creating a new entry into the…
- [Lake Holiday House - Cross Junction, Virginia](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lake-holiday-house-cross-junction-virginia-pj-vj~847107)
  - Location: Cross Junction, VA
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: This is a lake house on a very steep site. It is positioned to act as a camera to the lake, and to maximize the lake view. The house had to comply with the gated community’s restrictive covenants regarding roof pitch, building materials, and colors. The goal was to make the house as compelling as possible, given the restrictive covenants and the site’s quickly falling topography. The house is entered by walking up a gently stepped, staggered breezeway, into the main level, on the third floor. Th…

- [The Squire - Frederick County, Virginia](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-squire-frederick-county-virginia-pj-vj~847313)
  - Location: Winchester, VA
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: This house was built by our client and his brothers in 1975. It was a kit house, called “The Squire,” that he bought from Lowes. He changed what was supposed to be the garage into a large family room, and added two wings out the back, to the west, in the early 1990’s. Our client and his wife decided it was time to transform The Squire. The house was pedestrian and uninspired, but in the right place, sitting between the edge of a large lawn and the woods, with a view to the Allegheny Mountains to…
- [The Samuel Noakes House - Winchester, Virginia](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-samuel-noakes-house-winchester-virginia-pj-vj~847028)
  - Location: Winchester, VA
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: This building is one of the oldest in Winchester. The original, limestone portion was built in 1810. Around 1840, the house was modified, in the then- popular, Greek Revival style. A two-story brick addition was constructed to the rear, facing the side (Cork) street. The addition had different floor levels and rooflines than the original house. The structure served as a single- family home for many decade. When our client purchased the building, it had been divided horizontally into two, low- re…

  - Location: Star Tannery, VA
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: This was a small, unheated cabin on a steeply sloped, heavily wooded, rural site. Our clients wanted to be able to renovate the cabin in order to enjoy it year-round, instead of draining the pipes every fall and waiting until spring to use it again. Their budget was very modest, and they were open to making the cabin more modern, open, and light-filed. The cabin’s low pitched gable roof was removed, and a new butterfly roof was built, which allows the cabin to open up to the view. A new, L-shape…
- [Dr. Glass House - Winchester, Virginia](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/dr-glass-house-winchester-virginia-pj-vj~847643)
  - Location: Winchester, VA
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: Built in 1893, this house in Winchester, Virginia is a masculine, heavy, Queen Anne brick house. On both levels, the original house had three large front rooms, two small rear ones, and a grand stair. A later, rear addition contained many small rooms on the first floor, and a semi- conditioned, low ceilinged, glassed-in porch on the second floor. The kitchen was undersized and cramped, and didn’t easily accommodate more than one person. The house is known locally as the Dr. Glass House, because…

  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: This project in Rappahannock County, Virginia involved the renovation of, and addition to, a small house built in the late 1700’s. The house was very primitive, with no heating system or indoor bathroom. The house is situated on a farm in Rappahannock County, with beautiful views of rolling hills and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It had a distinctive, asymmetrical gable roofline, and was built of fachwerk, an old German construction method in which brick infill was placed between heavy timbers. The…
