## Community Q&A

**Q: Have some leftover Daltile French Quarter Bourbon Street 3117 tile** *(in Polls)*

Just finished replacing my 22 year floor and have some extra tiles.

12 12”x12” tiles (taupe, gray/taupe, and mauve/plum colors)
9 6”x12” tiles (blue/gray, taupe/gray, and gray/beige colors) plus 1 mauve/plum tile with a cracked tip of the tile -90% intact
2 6”x6” tiles (gray tones)

If interested, please contact me at mtpierson06@verizon.net

A: Clarity in writing is key to understanding. I agree with RNmom and Mark, most readers would have thought that these tiles were extras from your new flooring.

**Q: Benjamin Moore Brewster Gray at 75%?** *(in Paint)*

For those that have used Benjamin Moore Brewster Gray, do you find it leans more blue or more gray?
I got a sample and seems to look quite a bit darker and more gray than the pics I have seen online, which definitely look to have more blue. Thinking of trying it at 75%, to see if it comes a bit closer.

A: The OP wanted something a bit lighter and more blue. Marina Gray is very gray and I don't think it would look very good with Shale--not enough contrast and too gray.

Shale works much better with a darker blue like Water's Edge.

**Q: Help with my dining nook** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Looking for ideas of what I could add to this wall in my little dining nook. I have this antique table on bench, plus a recycled barn wood cabinet. But the wall is blank and need help with some ideas. I have this picture also that I would like to incorporate if possible

A: Have you considered swapping the cabinet and the bench? Then you could put whatever art you want on that wall.

**Q: Sloped Ceilings** *(in Polls)*

Looking for advice. The room above our garage has two slopes sections. They are low. The painter used the ceiling color. But maybe it should it be painted the color of the wall to make it more cohesive. The verticals walls are SW Alabaster. What color should I use on my sloped ceilings?

A: Why two colors at all? They are not a great combination--one is very white and the other more yellow-ish. Too close for contrast. I'd paint the entire room one or the other, whichever works better with the furnishings.

**Q: Need honest, helpful, realistic feedback on nearly-completed kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Let me preface this post by saying that
a) i worked with a fantastic designer
b) my new kitchen has the best flow/work space of any kitchen ive ever cooked in
c) i love it! And so do my kids and husband so i should just let that be enough. Alas…
Of the 25-30 friends who have come over with the specific intention of seeing my new kitchen, about 90% have not said anything complimentary about the kitchen. I get lots of ”oh wow! you guys must be so happy to have a kitchen again!” or ”Do you like it?” Some just dont say anything. Maybe some might compliment my stove (she’s gorgeous) or the backsplash (it is a work of art, esp up close) but only 4 people have actually said they think its beautiful. And interestingly, those 4 friends absolutely GUSHED over it and said it should be in magazines! Ha!
My husband wishes I didnt care what others think. And so do I!!! This is sooo silly!! But when you put this much money into your house, you want to feel like you’ve appreciated the value of your home. And based on the majority of the reactions Ive gotten, I’m not sure we did. (not that we plan to sell…but still)
So my request from this community is constructive feedback. Please tell me if there are any changes I could make that would be relatively inexpensive that might make the kitchen appeal to more people. For example, I can’t do anything about the cabinets, but I could change the hardware. I cant change the counters, but i could swap out decor (easily!) and lighting fixtures.
I really do want honest feedback, but do please be gentle — I’m feeling like an insecure teenage girl here! And im afraid i sound like the skinny girl in middle school who would say how fat she was so others would tell her she’s soooo skinny. Im not seeking praise—just constructive feedback!

A: You asked for low cost suggestions to make the kitchen appeal to more people. Unless you are planning to sell your house in the very near future the answer is NOTHING.seriously why do you want it to appeal to more people??? To get compliments? You might take everyone’s advice and still not get more feedback. I would stop worrying about it and just enjoy the kitchen as is. But I already said that.

**Q: Art Vs Mirror and Wallpaper Advice** *(in Home Decorating)*

Two things: Wondering about taking this mirror out of this dining nook and putting the series of vintage bird prints instead. I also

picked out a wallpaper (Artemis - Dove) for this space to give it some visual interest. The sconces can stay or go as well. Please let me know what you think.

A: Funny story, lalagirl! If you and he love old wood, brick, stone, and natural fiber rugs and window treatments, it's easy to "knock back the newness"! Our primary residence is over 100 years old, so we had good bones to work with, but like you, our vacation home was build 30 years ago, relatively new. Over the years we've made it cozy and lived in--most of the furniture is from estate and tag sales, and even though the most of the home is painted white, we have lots of color, pattern and texture in textiles and rugs.
