We wanted to use Charles, but he was booked up. Little did we know, we could have just waited until he was free and probably still finished faster and at a higher quality. > > Unfortunately, that decision caused more issues than we could have imagined. > > SLOW > We kicked off on Sept. 1. Jason said 3 weeks to order and receive materials followed by 3 weeks of install. Knowing contractors are always slow, we added a couple weeks and mentally prepared for early November. > > Thanksgiving came – still a construction site. > December baby shower came – still a construction site. > Christmas came – still a construction site. > 2023! – still a construction site. > > THEY BUILT AN ENTIRE HOUSE DOWN THE STREET DURING THIS TIME. > > Jason didn’t “finish” our project until January, which delayed several other aspects of work on our home in preparation for our 2nd child. Aside from that, we were constantly chasing him for updates. > > With a toddler and a dog, we wanted to be prepared for when we’d have people in our home. But we’d hear nothing for days at a time. We’d chase him by text, phone and, toward the end, email so we could fully document the process. > > If you want someone attentive that will give you a good handle on timelines, look elsewhere. > > NOT DETAIL-ORIENTED > Where to begin. Start to “finish,” this was a brutal process. I have 8 bullets in the full review, but Jason was simply unable to manage his teams in a logical order. Even when they did arrive, the job lacked the attention to detail a homeowner would expect. There are several issues following the job that we are going to finish ourselves to be done with Jason. > > UNABLE TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS > We admit not everyone needs this because they are working with designers, but don’t count on Jason to provide any input. He’ll (almost) do exactly what you ask without thought. > > This was especially obvious in our laundry room. When we had a competitor come out to give us a bid, he quickly identified that some plumbing would have to be moved in order to install a new utility cabinet. Jason...not a word, which of course become an issue. > > CONCLUSION > Our project was small comparatively, but it was still a year of private college tuition. If Jason didn’t have the time or attention, he should have told us up front. > > We still have all our communications if you somehow need more convincing. A: It’s 61” x 114” **Q: What type of floor would you suggest for this area?** *(in Flooring)* Hello all, I can't seem to figure out what type of flooring would be best suited for this area. I am stuck between tile and wood. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated! The area in question here is the carpet. A: I would consider tile since the room has an exterior door and especially if you have a pool or pets. Just to protect the flooring from traffic in/out of that door. Hope this helps! **Q: Distance between island seating and fridge - need input!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are finalizing our cabinet layout and order this week and I want some input on our island size and the distance between the overhang of our island and our refrigerator, which is behind it. I'm inserting a photo for reference of the layout. Right now, in this screen shot, the island is 48"x72" - it has a 12" overhang. The general size of this seems good to us. Here's where our dilemma is: husband would like more than a 12" overhang - he'd like 15 or possibly even 18" (we are a tall family) we don't really need the additional 12" base cabinet in the island for storage, however, I personally think aesthetically, it's going to look very unbalanced to have an overhang beyond 15" without something there to achieve the visual balance with the overhang. husband is not a fan of endcaps or legs for the island overhang either, though I like them and love the finished furniture-look they lend to islands. He hates that it messes up with leg room - that's a driving force behind a lot of this whole discussion. So this is a difference of opinion i suppose, but I doubt I'll come out on the winning side - we'd likely end up with some type of support underneath for the counters where the rubber meets the road - we can't make this room any bigger, and the distance from the overhang in this design to the wall/over-fridge cabinet is 60 inches. We have a counter depth LG so the door handles and actually doors do stick out a bit beyond that. So it's a tiny bit less if we're being real. We currently are fine with the size of our fridge, I suppose there's a possibility someday we'd want a full size fridge, but we've also lived with much smaller. We do have a chest freezer in our basement. So here's my question - what distance between fridge and seating would you recommend here? How do you think we can find a middle ground to get the leg-room we want, island size we want, and not run into traffic problems with the fridge? Are there other considerations I haven't thought of? We're pretty set on the overall design and layout on the major stuff, this is sort of the final thing to be determined. Our designer said we could do a 5" cabinet that's essentially "dead space" behind the regular base cabinets in the island so that it's still the 4x6 size and do the 18" overhang....good or bed idea? Open to suggestions A: I have always used 36" as the absolute minimum for a walk space in a kitchen. So I would use a barstool in the space to see how much room you would need with the barstool pushed out and still have 36" to the refrigerator. Hope this helps. **Q: help! kitchen cabinets and hood style** *(in Design Dilemma)* I need help deciding on upper cabinets. They will go to the ceiling but should I do a small box or one continuous cabinet? I’ll attach inspiration photos and our proposed kitchen design. Hood, I have just a simple box but not sure if I should add some shape, have it curve in from the front or sides, cover it in tile? A: It's really a personal preference on style but I have found the small box adds some interest to the design and breaks up the look of one solid door. The hood is the same story, really personal preference on style. The first picture you provided with the wood-painted hood with the panel sloped back is preferable. My opinion is that the box looks heavy and needs a tall ceiling in a larger kitchen. Hope this helps. **Q: What can I do to increase curb appeal of my house?** *(in Landscape Design)* We just painted our front door a light blue/teal color to go with the renovations we are doing on the inside of our house. I bought wood to wrap our front columns, and we plan on "squaring" them off to have a cleaner look on the porch. I need some ideas on what else we can do to help make the front exterior look better. Should we add shutters? I feel like it is very flat, so any ideas would be appreciated! A: You could also consider some additional colors to add dimension. Possibly darker facia and gutters. Some cedar touches could add some pop to the front as well - window planters, cedar shutters, cedar front porch railing and posts. Did a quick mock up on my phone (far from perfect) and it’s a little busy but showcases how a few updates can make a significant change. **Q: New pulls? Are these too modern?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello! When we built our house I hastily chose the kitchen pulls. Looking back, I would have liked more traditional ones, maybe black/dark. Now though holes have been created for these large pulls, non standard with other pulls. Any suggestions to replace these? A: It's my opinion that cabinet hardware is very personal choice with my clients and each project takes on a different style. The hardware that is installed on your cabinets is a very popular style and I think it works well with your cabinet style. With that being said, if you are not happy with them there is most likely a spread (spacing of screws) available that you could find to replace with something more appealing to you.
