A: Yes, the wall is dry laid. We prefer to create dry laid stone walls where possible versus mortared walls, for both the practicality and durability of the construction in New England, and also to honor the tradition and aesthetic. Thanks so much for the comment. **Q: Very nice.** *(in Photo Questions)* I would like to get a low new england fieldstone garden wall, which is very low and not very wide. I love the straight sides and top style with the nice corners. If it is dry set, I am concerned (because there wouldn't be super heavy stones weighing it down), that it may fall apart a bit if bumped into by a lawnmower possibly. And also, some stones would be moved after some time and it will loose it's straight edge appearance. So, maybe some mortar can put further inside and not the top? What would you recommend, dry or mortared, for a garden wall with the roundish rocks about 9" and about a foot wide? TY A: The stones can be secured with 'hidden mortar' on the undersides, but mortar should never be relied on for structural integrity because it will fail eventually due to water wearing it away. There is a lot to the dry stone walling technique but two main aspects are laying stones over seams, never directly on top of each other, to lock them in to a pattern. Also the center of the wall contains hearting which are smaller stones that fill in the core and lock the larger stones into place. Hidden mortar is typically used on the underside of the top stones when they need to stay firmly in place (like on a seat wall). **Q: Rough estimate per foot for a wall like this** *(in Photo Questions)* Hi. Thank you, Maureen Cary massscary@gmail.com A: Hi Maureen, There are a lot of variables in cost for any wall including the cost of stone, type of construction, and jointing. This style is with reclaimed weathered New England fieldstone rounds & flats (not super expensive but not the cheapest material either), dry-laid (no mortar, not much base or footing underground because the stones can move with frost heaving cycles, requires skill for proper laying of stones to interlock for structural integrity but lasts much longer because of this) and double-faced (meaning both sides should look good) freestanding (vs. retaining), so roughly $50/face foot. Face feet are each foot of wall along the length & height that are showing on each side, so this wall has two sides to count. If it was retaining you wouldn't see the back (buried in the grade that you are retaining) so you would only pay for the front face feet. Hope this helps! --- *Source: Houzz professional profile.
