## About

Matthew Bremer, AIA leads Architecture in Formation in New York City. The award-winning firm has a reputation for thoughtful and rigorous projects ranging from bespoke residences to innovative housing and commercial development.

Rather than a defining style or type, AiF approaches each project with a consistent level of sensitive investigation and meticulous development. Equally obsessive about the profile of a sofa leg as the thermal properties of a facade, design is about searching for a solution that satisfies a broad and variable set of criteria.

Unifying the projects is a desire to achieve end results for users that are simultaneously obvious and unexpected. AiF has been recognized with numerous architecture and interior design awards and has been published in newspapers, magazines, and books on every continent.

Matthew studied Architecture at Rice and Yale. He has taught and been guest juror at architecture schools around the country, and in 2009, was recognized by the AIA with the national Young Architects Award.

**★★★★★ — Alexander Lasarenko, Aug. 2016**

> I've had the opportunity to work with Matt Bremer and Architecture In Formation on three occasions, and they were huge successes. Our employees loved the spaces because they inspired them to be creative. AIF's creativity and ingenuity exceeded our expectations every time, without exceeding the agreed-upon budget. Creativity, respect for a budget and genuinely nice people - you can't ask for a better experience.

**★★★★★ — Carlos Junqueira, Aug. 2016**

> Great working with Architecture In Formation team. The project got and still gets a good press and our clientele love it!!!

**★★★★★ — Peter Rappaport, Aug. 2016**

> I thought Matt was excellent to work with. He, and his team, absolutely optimized the space in our apt and delivered exactly what my wife and I were looking for. Would use him again, and strongly recommend him to others.

- [House for a Butcher and an Art Maven](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/house-for-a-butcher-and-an-art-maven-pj-vj~643266)
  - Location: Not specified

  - Description: This house registers a delicate balance between modesty and majesty within the surrounding landscape. The original house, a low-slung 1970s ranch with added 1980s master suite by Andrew Geller, has been resurrected with two simple and precise design solutions – a fold and a stitch. By slicing two diagonals along the original pitched roof, two wings appear to be folded up from the previous roof line of the house. The soaring new public wing created by this gesture pulls light into the double-high…
- [West Pond House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/west-pond-house-pj-vj~1333932)
  - Location: Not specified

  - Description: The owners wanted a house which nodded to the traditional gambrel-style shingle Hamptons vernacular with classic lines, yet reinterpreted and edited with a decidedly 21st century eye - one that could accommodate their fast-growing family, art collection, and entertaining agenda; a state-of-the-art home that was timeless, efficient, gracious, luxurious, and a bit head-turning on the inside. The architecture, interiors, and landscape are also seen here as a single design continuum. Furnishings are…

  - Description: A tiny two-room cottage from the 1890’s was abandoned and on the verge of collapse. Only the two rooms, now consisting of the bedroom, bath, and south (entry) porch, existed originally. Made of German fachwerk construction, a variant of log building, where a mortar is made from the limestone and laid between thick horizontal cedar posts, it was a solid and elegantly hewn thermally insulated structure. It was also sited on the breeziest knoll on the 300 acre ranch; on the stillest and steamiest A…

- [Tribeca Family Duplex](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/tribeca-family-duplex-pj-vj~1332844)
  - Location: Not specified

  - Description: We took a poorly proportioned loft and divided the space into a more classic layout, carving out a four-bedroom duplex of 2,600 square feet within the space. Throughout the home, rift-cut white oak flooring, cerused oak and lacquer built-ins, and custom lighting create a charming environment for the young family that lives here.

  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: Our goals for the interior renovation of this 1,500 SF duplex penthouse, were to “make it a stunning, sexy, one-of-a-kind home; and consummately New York”. We deployed digital design/fabrication methods off-site, including CNC milling to create wall panels resembling the Manhattan nightscape when back-lit with LEDs. With the origami folded-plate steel and Corian stair, the aesthetic and structural criteria were met by CNC water-jet cutting. This project received an award for exemplary use of str…
- [Fractal Pad](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/fractal-pad-pj-vj~116671)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: This project is about a highly glamorized domestic typology: the urban bachelor pad. The client, a very young and successful Wall Street commodities trader wanted to create an entirely interior landscape away from the city and the outside world. Our response was to consider the experience of this primary residence as a daily return to Plato’s Cave; as the conscious exfoliation of exterior stresses through the creation of an enveloping abstract domestic landscape, where light and shadow could sim…
- [Jane Street Loft](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/jane-street-loft-pj-vj~1327994)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: We transformed a formerly rough-and-tumble artist’s live-work loft for a young family in an iconic West Village manufacturing building. A crisp, spare interior defined by white plaster, natural stone, antiqued mirror, and cool woods is inserted into the soaring existing volume defined by perimetral exposed brick framing soaring windows, a monumental central arched window, steel columns, and exposed steel beams. Ample natural light articulates the subtle play of materials and details, both new an…

  - Description: A rather typical one bedroom condo from the 1980’s was transformed to exploit the west-facing Hudson River view, great light, and love of collecting and entertaining.
