There is no single right way to do it, there are a lot of pro's and con's to both. An open foyer makes the home feel larger and maximizes natural light. The downside is there is less privacy, and it's harder to contain the mess from visitors coming over. A closed foyer is a great transition piece and makes a lot of sense in a larger home.
