In spite of my lack of knowledge of the area and pickiness, she kept a great attitude and was always motivated to show me more houses, even after a few contracts fell through. When it came time to sell a few years later, there was no doubt I was going to use her again with her good attitude and tenacity to get things done. The shelf is 36 inches and I have a king size bed. Will this look okay? A: I would not it sounds too small over a king-size bed. **Q: Help with boring master bath** *(in Home Decorating)* We recently built a house and are very happy with the design decisions we made throughout. However our master bath came out a bit more boring then I would have like it to. I’m trying to decide if I should tile or wallpaper behind the mirrors? Paint the whole room? Something to make it feel less blah...any ideas? A: I would wallpaper the wall with the window. Something big and bold! Something like this from House of Hackney which would soften it a bit and maybe more substantial pendants. It is beautiful, you must be thrilled. **Q: Need help with backsplash color** *(in Design Dilemma)* Please help with advice on backsplash color. These ivory cabinets & busy granite will be the death of me. :( I'm attaching several photos. The first is the original backsplash (like a taupe/gray). It didn't really match the counters & the busy design clashed with the busy granite. We knew we were going to replace it, so we decided to use it as a pallet to paint a couple different colors to see what it would look like on a big scale with the cabinets & counters. We tried picking up one of the lighter colors in the granite & match the cabinets so it's a good flow (see subway tile in photo - we were considering that simple tile with a matching grout). But that seemed kind of boring/stark, so we tried putting a grayish blue on the wall to match the decor in the rest of our house (kitchen is open to living room). That didn't work out either because it drew attention to the difference in color between the ivory cabinets & white crown molding. We then tried a lighter blue (no photo) which was the same issue, so we went back to the original (Revere Pewter, which is what our whole main open area is). Then for the backsplash we tried to pick up one of the darker colors in the granite, but wasn't sure if that is too dark for a kitchen. Thanks so much for any advice. :) Note- I know the granite looks slightly different, depending if I used flash or not. The flash seems to bring out the peach in it. It does have a somewhat peachy undertone, but not as bad as the flash portrays. A: Unfortunately, it is impossible to pick shades over the internet, too many variables. Revere Pewter is a beautiful color but if you want help with shades I would hire a decorator, a color consult is very affordable. **Q: What did we get into? 1970's chalet/cabin with lots of potential** *(in Landscape Design)* Good Evening Houzz Friends- My husband and I just bought our "on paper" dream home- a base camp for outdoor activities in the NE four seasons- skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. - under 1000 sq ft, situated on some land in the woods. I truly love it and not just because A frames are trendy. it's the perfect place for our little family of three (we have a 4 y/o) to use as base camp for outdoor activities year round. So thankful to have found our base camp but it it's not exactly what I had pictured in terms of a traditional "cabin" with rustic decor. Cozy-check. Location in the woods- check. Loft-check. Fireplaces and wood stove-check. Ski trails-check. Lake check. Knotty pine... carpet... We can make it work. But would truly appreciate some help when it comes to the aesthetics exterior and interior. Looking for some landscaping advice and also some interior/great room guidance. Outside- ???? We need a new door and lighting, some landscaping. Inside-KITCHEN- top priorities are replacing kitchen cabinets with Ikea green-gray cabinets with leather handles. Need help with lighting options above the sink and island. And the living space- for a sofa, we're leaning toward a lovesac sectional but they are pricey. We want an option for guests to sleep over though. (Photos attached are from the sales sheet- we will be eliminating some of the items) Thoughts about lighting fixtures for the open areas? I do like antler chandeliers...I know they are love/hate.Better half comes from a big hunting family so he votes thumbs up. I'd prefer something else. There's so much to do- exciting and fun but overwhelming at the same time. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you! A: My advice would be to take a deep breath. Think about how you will actually live in the house, this should be a relaxing place to rejuvenate your soul. Embrace the natural beauty. I would not do any landscaping other than a nice sturdy walkway and a little cleanup. The last thing you want to do on vacation is yard work. I would have it repainted a dark foresty green and get rid of the white door and window frames. Also, take advantage of some of the vertical space. Maybe replace the large speakers with wall-mounted speakers. There is already so much wood that I would not bring any more in, replace the stools and the little standing chest or at least paint them. The pendant lighting should be a bit bigger and possibly hang lower. I would consider painting the back wall in the kitchen and adding some shelves. I would also paint the ladder and the railing, just to break up all the wood. Don't get me wrong, the wood is beautiful but there is so much of it, its hard to take it all in. Also, a skylight would be fabulous! It would add a ton of light and you could also enjoy more of natures beauty. **Q: Updated kitchen in an old house needs further updating! ;)** *(in The Old House)* Hi everyone! I just purchased my first home, and I am so excited. Some context first - the original part of the house is circa 1750, built of stone, and was used as a coopers shop. There have been several additions since then, including the kitchen. The style was somewhat generously described as colonial (it's more vernacular.) There is also a barn visible from the kitchen window. I love the original, older parts of the house, and these are what pulled at my heart strings. The kitchen is fine. I can't justify replacing something as functional and well-maintained. If I was designing a kitchen from scratch, I'd love soapstone counters and a mix of wood and painted cabinetry that is more like furniture, but another time.. :) Also, these pictures are from the listing and the furniture is not mine. I move in mid-month, but lately all I can do to stay sane during this time inside is think about ways to design the home. Here are some things I'd like to change: The backsplash - The idea was surely to coordinate the tile with the original exposed stone, but the tile is cooler and more blue. I think this is more apparent in the second picture. Also, I don't like the pattern. I have looked through pictures exhaustively trying to find something that works, but I realize now I need help figuring out what exactly that is. I thought of using something simple like bead board, but then read that food becomes caked in the grooves. The hood - I don't care for how it is staggered with the cabinets. Also, do you feel like the matchy-matchiness of the cabinets ought to be broken up? I have considered replacement with everything from plaster to black stove pipe. The pendant lights - is the one over the island Tuscan-style? This might be difficult to replace as the shift in height to the ceiling happens over the island, making placing three independently strung lights tricky. I'm not sure what can be done but I don't care for unit. Nor do I care for the unit over the kitchen table. I'd love to get something with genuine patina, but I haven't been able to find anything yet. I'm also open to other ideas for items not mentioned above, but again, I'm not taking her down to studs. Thank you! A: That's a lot of wood but a beautiful kitchen, you can tell just from the pictures that it is good quality! I would definitely paint the island, black or a dark green like BM Hunter Green or even Salamander. Soapstone would be gorgeous, but I would do a 2.5" edge. That room is so heavy that the counter looks like it could just float away, it needs more weight. Then I would change out the backsplash to a dark green tile, Like this tile from Fireclay or this tile by Bedrosians. **Q: Teak Dressers with Metal Bands** *(in Design Dilemma)* These teak dressers are solid, in good shape but the addition of the metal band is a little odd. Looking for suggestions to update them. We're willing to stain or paint. A: It looks like white oak to me, I wouldn’t do a thing to it. The wood is gorgeous, needs a good cleaning, but I would not use any oil, just a little soap and water. I also think the metal bands are perfect as they are.
