## Community Q&A

**Q: What to do for backsplash and wall colour?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are in the process of picking out new counter's.Has anyone seen Wilson art Oiled Soapstone? OR a black granite.
If I USES such a dark colour for the counters should I then use a lighter coloured backsplash? Suggestions would be great.
Also what colour should I put on the walls? Right now they are a white with a green undertone and I'm really tied of them. Would like a colour that warms up the space but doesn't make it feel small. What do I do with the ceiling? Paint it white?
The flooring is lino that has a marble appearance with white, grey and a small amount of brown. The cupboards are oak?

A: Hi farm4gal!

Personally, I would go for contrast. Because your kitchen already has a fair amount of black from the appliances I would go for the soapstone as well to not overwhelm.

As for the backsplash I would use a lighter colored tile that picks up on the highlights within the laminate. Something like Glass Tiles with a Riffle Pattern from DM Decos by Design (link below) in a clear slightly gray color. The subtle nature of these tiles give interest without being too flashy.

**Q: Coverings for 30 ft window wall with nice view but northern climate** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi, I have a long window wall in our family/dining room. Right now I have vertical blinds which I like because I can flip them open during the day but shut them at night. We also have cellular shades behind the blinds for sun control during the evening and heat control during the summer and winter. Our style is Scandinavian modern.

A: To be clear the door is located between the couch and the table?

Wide slat blinds would work if you want to introduce a horizontal theme to the room. Many of the pieces in your space already have a strong horizontal element such as the back of your couch or the shelves on your entertainment center. The blinds could pick up on these and bring the whole room together if they are kept simple. It would be a lot of horizontal but detailed properly it could work.

You could use these Roller Blinds with the honeycombs if you wanted to as they can be mounted "inside" or "outside" which refers to connecting to either the inside of the window frame or to the wall. If attached to the wall (outside mount) you can keep the honeycomb where it is and use them just as you do now.

**Q: Privacy for a shower and bath** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have a beautiful glass window spanning our shower and tub. Does anyone have suggestions about how to achieve privacy?

A: Is this an interior or exterior window? Also ground floor or other story?

DM Decos by Design carries an interesting product that are called "Recycled Glass Panels" and basically what they are are damaged and junked windshields that have been remanufactured and are often used in bathrooms. They add a cool modern interest but probably do not offer as much privacy as frosting might.

**Q: back splash for kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I want to tile a backsplash in my kitchen on only one wall. Is using a carrera marble subway tile over doing it with carrera marble counters.
I don't want to match the green of the wall paint and think white may be too boring.

A: Iridescent Ovals or Gold Rush Squares from DM Decos by Design would be wonderful in your kitchen. I think that picking up on the earth tones is a great idea, and paying special attention to the copper look of your knobs could add some warm interest. The Gold Rush Squares are pictured below and I think they give just enough interest to update the space and make it feel comforting.

These tiles are made by pouring copper aventurine mineral into the molten glass, creating breathtaking swirling threads of copper and gold mineral throughout the body of each tile.

**Q: need help with our walk in shower.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

we love the size of it (5 x 7 inside) but it is dark. one glass door works well but need with ideas to brighten up the space. We need the storage areas we have and cannot make it larger or remove walls any ideas of how to put glass breaks in the walls without using glass block or creating huge cleaning problems?

A: You could try adding more glass if the shower isn't cased on 3 sides. Photos or a plan would be helpful.
