San Angelo Plumbing was great throughout the duration of the process. The outlets are off center. Sloppy finishing around the baseboards and drywall. They left a lot of drywall putty that stuck to the floors of the basement when they left. Matrix retrieved their leftover supplies but never cleaned up after the project was completed. > > The worst part about the whole process was that they charged out the loan account two months prior to the project being completed. I contacted the loan company who was able to put a hold on it so my payments would stop. The loan company tried multiple times to contact Matrix regarding the issue but they never received a response back. The pictures attached show the state of the bathroom when the account was charged out. Well, the first red flag should’ve been the price they were giving us. 70,000$ to refinish the basement, redo a bathroom located down there, and add an additional room. It was only until after it was too late into the contract that we were informed just how much we were being overcharged by friends in this kind of business. So eventually we took out the bathroom project and it brought us to our current price: $56,500. This job should’ve been easy, right? Even with set backs, it was estimated 10-12 weeks according to the man we signed the contract with. We are now just about at that point and all that’s been accomplished is rough framing, rough electrical, and rough HVAC. Their scheduling is absolutely ridiculous and all they keep telling us is “oh, well set backs happen in construction“. The entire month of December, only one thing is being accomplished (foam insulation install). As well as January (Drywall install). It seems they’re only doing one little part of the project at a time, per month. We’ve tried reaching out to not only our project manager, but the higher ups in the company. Our project manager just tells us “Oh, that’s the soonest we can get those contractors in“. As for the higher ups, they have yet to even acknowledge us and our concerns. The main problem with this project is that it’s leaving one person camping out in a tent (for some semblance of privacy) in our front room, because that was their living space. And it’s really taking a toll on their mental health. Now they have no living space and the company just keeps delaying things far beyond what we were told. And they know this person is displaced. They don’t care. It’s now estimated that a 2.5 month project is going to take 5, being finally finished by March. In addition, we were told about the " Builder Trend" app that we would be able use to keep up to date with project installments and deadlines. It all sounded so great. None of it is true. First, the Builder Trend app is NEVER accurate. The times are wrong, the dates are wrong, there is no follow through at all. We actually had a 14 day period in the middle of our project where we never saw one person- and the app showed the project should have already been completed. Unless you literally can make a full time job out of working around the installer's schedules (which is typically work for an hour or so and take off), I would highly recommend choosing a different company. We did a lot of research upfront, went to their show room, saw their wall system, went to an open house, etc. Spoke w/ one of the owners & were convinced that even though this wall design was more expensive than we wanted to pay, it would be the best long term fit for our home. We scheduled an appointment for Matrix to come and measure/quote our basement. They showed up, measured the basement & provided a quote to us immediately, while still at the house. The quote was $40K & my husband and I needed to talk about this. We were not in a position to make a decision immediatley. This didn't go over well with the estimator who was at our house. While he was a decent guy, he told us he worked 100% commissions & he had to call his manager from our home if we did not commit that day. We let him know that we would take our time deciding & if we wanted to proceed, we would contact them. Fast forward to after we signed the contract. We were given a lead time of approximately 8-10 weeks from start to completion. Needless to say, it was close to 14 weeks before complete. During the construction period, the communication was non-existent. The Project Manager NEVER got back to us. We would go days before he would respond to a text/call/email. The first crew that was working on our house even admitted that he was never available. We were told to start communicating with the crew, not the PM. The problem is, Matrix hires the construction crews & they are not employees of Matrix; therefore, anything that you are not happy with or want to change, has to be approved by Matrix before the crews will do the work. This lead to many delays. There were so many delays with our construction because the workers said they couldn't proceed with certain things until Matrix agreed they were going to pay for the work. We had drawings/plans that showed the work they were supposed to do but there always seemed to be questions/discrepencies. We were so disappointed with the lack of communication that I contacted one of the owners, who was a very nice guy. He lit a fire & communication improved, for all of one week. On top of this, the quality of the work being done was terrible. For example, the crew put the carpet in on the stairs first. Then they walked up & down the stairs every single day, without covering the new carpet. They didn't cover one thing while doing the work (washer, dryer, fridge). And they didn't clean/sweep once. We demanded an on-site meeting with our Project Manager to show him the things we were unhappy with. I believe the worst thing could have been the crown molding that literally dipped down 1/2" on every wall. They never brought out a laser to make sure it was level. There were gaps above & below it through out the entire basement. The installed the electrical outlets literally over 2' above the washer & driver, which looked ridiculous. When they sprayed the ceiling, they didn't pull out any of the old insulation, they just painted on top of it. When they installed the shower, they left close to 1/4" gap in between the flooring & the shower wall. Just careless, lazy workmanship. On top of this, they kept telling us that they couldn't find things that we ordered. We had everything in the garage & they would bring things into the basembent as they needed it. Two times, we found stuff that they told us we needed to buy. It was just in a big pile of crap that they never cleaned up. Example: they just left the bathroom vanity box sitting in the basement until we asked them to throw it out. They put the lighting fixture in a closet under the stairs when they started & then questioned where it was. When the PM came out, he agreed that it looked like crap & was very apologetic. Had it ever showed up and checked on the crew and their work, he would have known. Or if he ever responded to our calls/texts/emails. They ended up getting rid of that crew & hiring a new one to tear out a lot that was done & redo it. The second crew did a much better job & we were happy with their quality of work. The downside, they were also working on another house, so they had to juggle between finishing ours & working on another one. When we had our final walk through, my husband asked them to clean up a back room that they had empty boxes in (from the sink, vanity, etc). They said they would, and of course, they did not. The PM also said he was so sorry & was going to send us some gift cards to make up for our headaches. Those never came. We just received a survey from Matrix & both my husband & I filled it out, being brutally honest with our dissatisfaction. I was contact by someone in marketing who listened to my complaints & was apologietic as well. He ended up sending a $250 gift card & some cookies to us. Obviously marketing doesn't do much with the feedback they received, as today, we received a letter asking us if we wanted to make $500 by referring Matrix to anyone. This outfit really handles the details well. > > Hangups? A couple of minor ones. First, Matrix was right to suggest, in light of some low-hanging duct work, we go with a black ceiling. (If you don't know what that is, check with Matrix and they'll show you.) Great idea, but imperfect delivery. While the concept is excellent, the primer/paint combo they use (which isn't cheap stuff, by the way) does not hold very well to certain pipes, especially exposed copper pipes, and pipe insulation. As a consequence, we found that the black ceiling paint was, and still is, flaking and falling off of a handful of pipes along the ceiling. There are alternatives to painting these items, so if I were you, I'd check with Matrix, so that you and they can learn from our lesson. Other than that, we've discovered a very small amount of tile separation between the bathroom shower wall and floor (both tile). This r-18 rated, water proof, mold proof, mildew proof system (4' by 8' panels) was perfect for protecting my investment. They also did my drop ceiling, all electrical, hvac work and installed the three doors we added. The total process took about 4 weeks. The work crew was very professional. They worked with me in coordinating the parts of this project that I had other contractors complete and made the whole experience very enjoyable. My completed basement blends in with the rest of my house. The insulated panels keeps the humidity down and the temperatures at the same level as my upstairs level.
