I am even more eager to learn because we recently built a house in the country and I am so anxious to start planting. I just need some help getting started on what to put where and what to plant. A: Hi, its never too late to try something new. Its great you are challenging yourself. There are several suggestions I have before you plant anything. 1\. Visit a local nursery. You will be able to see the approximate size and textures of plants to get an idea of what you like and what will fill in the spaces over time. There are different hardiness zones so find out what is hardy in your area. Ask the nursery what they recommend. 2\. Get ideas from books on planting design- just look in a local library 3\. Plan out your hardscapes. Is there a path to the front door? Are you planning on adding a patio? An arbor? If you sketch out a masterplan of your house and property, you won't have to worry about planting something which you will have to move. 4\. Consider hiring a designer. Landscape Architects and Landscape designers will look at your soil, drainage, views, etc. There is more to landscaping than plants and you will enjoy the initial investment for decades as a garden matures. 5\. General guidelines: Plant tall evergreens on the corners to anchor the house. Plant shrubs in sets of 3,5,7 etc. Include both deciduous & evergreen plants to have seasonal interest. Consider a grove of small flowering trees as you come in the driveway. Keep in mind mature height of shrubs so you don't cover any windows.
