Our Dual Roles: Inspired Design, Meticulous Preservation
IS Architecture pursues two passions: creating beautiful, enduring homes in any style, and preserving historic structures. Our award-winning studio comfortably spans both worlds, offering inspired, timeless solutions whether clients are building anew or preserving the past.

> When we decided to remodel and add onto our 1941 cottage, we knew we needed an architecture firm that understood and appreciated the value and charm of old homes. Ione and Robert listened to what we wanted and were able to provide a design that exceeded our expectations. The house has the look and feel and charm of a 1940s home, but with all the modern amenities. They guided us through the complex permitting requirements and regulations and helped us make numerous decisions for the interior and exterior of the house. The results are outstanding and no one would ever believe that the house wasn't originally built like this in 1941. It's a dream come true.

> When we were looking for an architect for our 1927 Craftsman Bungalow, we wanted a team who had experience with the historic commission, the coastal commission, craftsman homes and the city of San Diego. IS Architecture has a great reputation with all. During the planning stage, IS Architecture gave us many alternatives and suggestions which allowed our home to continue to have the 1927 design and still gives us a comfortable home to live in. The remodel of our home was a large project and was completed on time, even a bit early and in budget due to the detailed plans and excellent communication between IS Architecture, our General Contractor and ourselves. We continue to receive many compliments on our home. We have and will continue to recommend IS Architecture.

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> Thank you! It's always a treat when we get the chance to work on older homes. We really appreciated that you wanted to retain the historic character of the home. We're so glad we were able to make this an updated, comfortable home for you.

**★★★★★ — dfensnet, July 2015**

> We were delighted with the outcome of our home renovation project, and very pleased with the entire process working with Ione, Marissa, Brandy and everyone at IS Architecture in getting to completion, on time and within budget.
>
> This was the complete renovation of a simple, three-bedroom 1957 ranch house, which is now a lovely Arts & Crafts inspired home with a wrap-around covered porch, with well-thought out special touches throughout the home.

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> We thoroughly enjoyed creating a home for you and your family. We made a big print of your house to hang in our office, so it's like we're home with you everyday! Thank you for your review.

**★★★★★ — cblee66, July 2015**

> We have worked with IS Architecture, over the past 20 years, on three different projects. Two of the projects, being on the same home, which is a 1920's Spanish Colonial Revival. They were very sensitive to the style of the home and quite clever to bring it into modern day functionality while still maintaining the integrity of the original home. Not an easy job. Everyone at IS Architecture has always been a pleasure to work with, over the span of 20 years. They are all very talented and great personalities. They are very creative, and have great taste. We highly recommend them for any and all projects and will always use them for our architectural needs.

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> Thank you so much for the wonderful review. You know our firm so well and your review truly captures our firm's internal collaborative design process. We are honored to have been a part of your family for over 20 years.

**★★★★★ — bhamlin00, July 2015**

> We hired IS Architecture to design our custom home, and we couldn't have been more satisfied. Ione's historical knowledge, attention to detail, and design expertise were all exceptional, and she patiently guided us through the entire process.
>
> This was a large and time-consuming project, but we always felt we had her full attention.
>
> We would enthusiastically recommend IS Architecture, and have done so on many occasions.

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> Guiding clients through the design and construction process is still one of the most rewarding aspects of residential projects. We gratefully appreciate your continued support through recommendations like this one. Thank you!

**★★★★★ — scomden, July 2015**

> I used IS Architecture to do architectural plans for a major remodel on a 1929 Spanish Revival home, and to help me secure a historic designation for my home. The entire project had to carefully thought out and meticulously executed as there were many rules/guidelines that had to be followed. Ione Steigler, the principal of IS Architecture, is an absolute master at historic additions, restorations and renovations. She is knowledgable, creative, easy to work with, and budget conscious. I can't recommend her firm highly enough.

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> Thank you for highlighting our firm's historic expertise. When showing photos of your home I will always point out the amazing historic Batchelder tiles you collected for re-use in your home. Your knowledge of ceramic tile, from the time period, made the project a marvelously reciprocal design process.

**★★★★★ — silvanazag, July 2015**

> It was a pleasure working with IS Architecture. Ion and Brandy provided us with great ideas and very thorough plans. They were professional and I felt like I was working with my best friend. I'd recommend them to everybody and use them anytime again.

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> We appreciate your review so much. We are very lucky to have amazing clients, like you, that embrace us as friends. Thank you!

**★★★★★ — nscull, July 2015**

> Ione and her team designed our home in La Jolla. We had one simple objective - design a home that was "warm" and reflected our life style with an emphasis on entertaining. Ione gently pushed us into adding beams to our kitchen - I was initially opposed. She knew how to get the right result and she was so right. Another factor for us was having a home that had distinct rooms as opposed to a great room. Again Ione and her team pulled this off. I am not sure anyone else could have done a better job of designing for our site which was a difficult one.

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> Thank you for emphasizing an aspect of the design process that is true for all our projects. We are here to guide and advise but in the end we are designing your home ... not ours. We get no better satisfaction than when a client feels as though the home fits them and their lifestyle perfectly.

**★★★★★ — lindak4, July 2015**

> We had a wonderful experience with IS Architecture. Ione listened to what we wanted and added her own vision and expertise to create a fantastic house that fit our family (e.g, she added a loft so our kids would have more room to play -- I never would have thought of that!). She has a fantastic eye for detail, and she helped us from the beginning of the project to the end. Each room turned out bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The entire office was professional and courteous, and they were an absolute pleasure to work with.

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> We thoroughly enjoyed creating a home for you and the kids. We do love the details! The whimsical touch of the kid's loft was so fun! Your project was a joy to work on and your family was a joy to work with. Thank you for your review.

**★★★★★ — danieljkao, July 2015**

> IS Architecture combines impeccable service with exceptional knowledge to provide a fantastic experience in home design, renovation, and building. They are a full service firm that goes above and beyond to make sure the clients' vision of their dream home is realized. They assist and complete all facets of the process including design, permits, details, etc. They have outstanding technical skills and knowledge as well as an amazing aesthetic pallet and eye that would work well with a variety of tastes and clients. They also work very well with contractors and are well-respected in the community. Best of all, I have always found that for whatever problem or concern, they provide unparalleled, honest, sound advice. I trust them as I would trust family (even more so!)--- and that is to say completely! I would recommend them 100%.

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> We are so happy that we met our mutual goal to create a home, and not just a "house", for your family. Thank you for the complements on our aesthetic acumen, completeness of services provided and advice provided. We will happily join the family!

**★★★★★ — lkruser, April 2015**

> Ione Stiegler/IS Architecture and team, were hired by us in September 2013. Our home is historic-in-nature, given it was built by a known architect, William Kesling, in 1946, Pre-Mid-Century Modern, and it was imperative to us that we maintain/preserve our home accordingly. ISA specializes in historic preservations, rehabilitations, restorations and reconstruction remodels.
>
> In September 2013, ISA began the architectural design process for a kitchen expansion/remodel on our home and a major historic rehabilitation/reconstruction of our entire home and detached garage. This included upgrading electrical, plumbing/sewer and telco/technology, and, new door and windows, lighting, roofing and concrete flatwork. During March thru September 2014, construction took place (more than $100,000 job) and ISA was with us every-step-of-the-way. ISA’s Project Manager Robert Davidson is a bright and upcoming architectural prodigy, whom contributed a wealth of influence, input and oversight into the project.
>
> As a result of ISA’s recommendation, in April 2015, we were selected by Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO) as recipients of a 2015 People in Preservation award; SOHO was impressed by the care and detail that was put into the sensitive addition to our known architect’s designed home.
>
> The architectural design process was completed on-time, especially given the number of revisions imposed, including Historic Review Board (HRB), Topographic Survey and Structural Engineering Drawings/Calculations; and with the upmost degree of precision/quality, honesty/trustworthiness and integrity/professionalism. ISA’s front office team is the absolute best; kind/personable, on-top-of-things and helping to make challenging situations less-challenging.
>
> We highly recommend Ione Stiegler/IS Architecture and team and would not hesitate to hire them again!

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> Thank you so much! It was a pleasure working with you both. This was truly a collaboration with you, the homeowners, and all the design and construction professionals. The end result is a beautiful and functional space that we hope you will enjoy for years to come.

**★★★★★ — User, April 2015**

> Hill Construction Company has teamed with IS Architecture on many outstanding projects over the years. We will continue to work with them because of their great design, dedication to preservation, excellent communication, and great work ethic. They are professional, honest, and a great company overall to work with. We give IS Architecture 5 stars!

**Comment from IS Architecture:**

> It is always a pleasure working with everyone at Hill Construction. They are the definition of efficiency and professionalism. Thanks so much for the review!

 - Description: Tucked between a tree-lined street and a deep, wooded canyon in Mission Hills, this 1917 Craftsman bungalow has a rich heritage. Unfortunately, its 2000 kitchen addition was an architectural misfit. Dim and crowded, the prior kitchen neither enhanced the home’s character nor functioned comfortably for a modern family. A walk-in pantry devoured valuable space, and a peninsula blocked the flow to the breakfast nook, creating traffic jams. Access to the living/family room was nonexistent—the kitche…

The roof and exterior walls have stained wood shingles accented by white trimmed doors and windows, grey cobblestone walls, and brick porches, sidewalks and driveway. The 4,429 sq. ft. house is situated towards the front of the 9,100 sq. ft. property to allow for a sizable private backyard. - Description: This 1910 Craftsman home is situated on a small lot along a heavily tree lined street of Mission Hills. The owners had an extensive collection of period appropriate furniture, antiques and Arts and Crafts pottery; they loved the feeling of their home yet needed more space and modernizing while keeping its original craftsman charm. The house is situated askew from its lot lines posing a difficulty in both expanding the foot print and creating outdoor living spaces. The first floor was minimally e…

 - Description: Tudor style homes are known for their steep pitched roofs, rooms with high ceiling, and the use of beams and heavy timbers. Wood beams were used in both the dining and family rooms. Many details already found in the home were mimicked to blend the new and original house together. The “coved and stepped” ceiling is a detail found in the living room and is seen in homes built around the same time. Tudors often times have gothic archways (arches that come to a point), although the home had elliptic…

 - Description: This Prairie style home sits atop Point Loma with panoramic views to downtown San Diego, the harbor, Coronado Bridge and North Island. Originally built in the late 1940s, only the living room took advantage of the grand views and the kitchen was completely closed off from the living and dining areas of the home. Goals of the remodel were to create a large workable open kitchen that would accommodate entertaining guests and further enhance the homeowners love of cooking. The goal for the second f…

The homeowners love the feel of their old home, but past remodels and additions have left their kitchen and master bathroom very dated by today’s standards. Goals: Preserve the historic front façade. - Description: This primarily one-story Spanish Colonial Revival home was originally designed by Richard Requa in 1927 for Judge Gray’s family. The residence is a “U” shaped floor plan around an interior courtyard. The original residence was designed with open portal walk ways as the circulation access to the bedroom areas. The design followed common theories for “healthy” living with natural air flow. However, one of the portals was never built causing the access to the fourth bedroom to be through the master…

 - Description: This 1937 traditional home is situated on a beautiful lot with views of the bay, downtown & Coronado. Although the home has large, bright open rooms, the only room that was small and dark was the kitchen. The homeowner had cut a “view window” in her existing kitchen wall so she could see out to the bay and it stayed like this for many years. ## Community Q&A

**Q: What brand of tile is on the fireplace?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Thank you

A: The client sourced the tiles in Michigan, from Pewabic Pottery; we do not have a record of the actual tiles they used. This project was completed 11 years ago, so can’t speak to the availability of tiles today.
https://www.pewabic.org/
Thanks,

**Q: What are those pendants?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I am in need of the right pendant...curious on these!

A: We sourced the pendants from PW Vintage Lighting. It's the Holophane Hanging Lamp, 14" with Glass Diffuser.

**Q: Please let me know what white paint color was used for the cabinets.** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Benjamin Moore Split Pea \#2146-30

**Q: what paint color is the island please?** *(in Photo Questions)*

So contemporary and fresh

A: Benjamin Moore Split Pea \#2146-30

**Q: Faucet?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Beautiful bathroom- do you recall the make/model of the faucet? Thank you!

A: Thanks for your comment! A few of the bathrooms in this house used Waterstone for the faucets. I'm not 100% sure that this bathroom was one of them though.

**Q: Elizabeth in Virginia** *(in Photo Questions)*

Could the details for the substantial curtain rod holding the shade be supplied here? That is just what I need!

A: Thank you for your comment. We don't have this information, this was selected by the homeowner and interior designer.
