For many years I used a name tree service company for tree maintenance, but over the years I was growing unsatisfied with their work. I felt that my trees and shrubs would benefit from better pruning. > > Last year I discovered Les Arbres via their Instagram account which shows numerous examples of their work. I scheduled a meeting with Les to discuss the scope of the work. He was very straightforward about the costs and time required to complete the work. Les has a presence about him that gave me confidence that he would deliver so I hired him on the spot. > On the first day of work they showed up in 3 large well maintained trucks. Every member of his team was courteous and very professional. A great first impression. We went over the work to be done to make sure we were in agreement whereupon they started working. Les encouraged me to inspect their progress to make sure I was satisfied with their work and to avoid any surprises. No problems. The pruning took several days to complete and each night they meticulously cleaned up the property. Les works with his son (Les IV) so there were 2 principals on the job site at all times. > > The finished product was phenomenal. My trees and shrubs have never looked better. I was so happy with their work that I hired them to clean up a steep cliff next to my property (photos are on their Instagram feed) and to install a fence along the cliff. This year (2019) they have transplanted trees and conifers and I have scheduled time for the cleanup of a woodlands area. I have been very impressed with the quality of work and professionalism of Les Arbres. They treated my property as if it was their own. > > Les and his team are enthusiastic about their work. It is fun to work with people who have a passion for plants. Les Arbres is my go to firm for all things related to tree care and landscaping. There is nobody better! ### All 59 reviews **★★★★★ — Lauren (Snow) Roche & Steve Roche, June 2026** > My parents have been long-time customers of Les Arbres Tree Service for many years, and I’ve always been amazed by the quality of their work. When my husband and I purchased our first home, one of the very first things on our to-do list was to have Les and his team come out and work their magic on our gardens for the spring season. > > They absolutely did not disappoint. The transformation was truly night and day—I can hardly recognize our gardens. Everything looks beautiful, healthy, and meticulously cared for. > > What sets Les and his team apart is not only their incredible skill and attention to detail, but also their professionalism, reliability, and genuine care for their clients and their properties. They are simply lovely people to work with, and it’s clear they take great pride in what they do. > > I cannot recommend Les Arbres Tree Service highly enough. We are thrilled with the results and look forward to working with Les and his team year after year for our spring opening and fall closing. **★★★★★ — marcosfecchino, Nov. 2025** > They did a fantastic job! Super happy with the results and looking forward to continuing working with them. > > If you are in need of support, don’t doubt on contacting them, **★★★★★ — pbarakett, Aug. 2025** > I cannot say enough good things about this father-and-son landscaping team. From start to finish, they were an absolute pleasure to work with. Both owners are hands-on, working right alongside their crew, which shows how much pride they take in their business. They were incredibly responsive, professional, and detail-oriented throughout the entire process. > > What impressed me most is not just their work ethic—though they truly work harder than anyone I’ve seen—but also their knowledge. Both father and son are trained in arboriculture and horticulture, and it really shows in the thoughtful way they approach every project. They don’t just “do landscaping,” they bring expertise, care, and artistry that elevate the end result. > > If you’re looking for a company that combines professionalism, skill, and genuine dedication, look no further. I highly recommend them! **★★★★★ — Anna Bannister, July 2023** > Les and his team are the best! We looked around quite a bit before moving forward with Les Arbres, and we are so glad that we did. Can't recommend them enough! The most professional group and lovely landscaping results. Thanks again, Les! **★★★★★ — Charlene Barnes, April 2023** > They are exceptional in every way. I have lived in my current home for over 30 years and they are the only ones I trust with my trees. We have several trees on a narrow lot. Some are 100 year old trees with huge canopies that are several stories high, and we also have japanese maples and ornamental trees that some other tree professionals didn't even recognize. They did a brilliant job pruning the very large trees and I am confident that they are healthy, much safer, and able to survive anything that nature can throw at them. They know about trees' needs, characteristics, and they listened to me and understood what I wanted and how their skills would help me achieve it. > > Their crew was very conscientious and diligently and safely worked over my neighbors' yards and very close to my house while causing as little disruption as possible, and they left my yard much cleaner than they found it! **★★★★★ — M S, Nov. 2022** > The Les Arbres team is second to none. We’ve worked with many contractors and subcontractors over the course of a 2 year extensive renovation and without question, Les Arbres has provided the most thoughtful, well-managed and knowledgeable work. What’s more, they have been incredibly communicative both with us as the clients but also with other contractors with whom their work overlaps. I couldn’t recommend them more highly for all your landscaping needs. **★★★★★ — thebiglerbunch, Sept. 2022** > Absolute BEST team!! We recently had them come and prune trees and shrubs. This father/son team are so nice, incredibly knowledgeable and thoughtful arborists, and super responsive. I would absolutely have them return and highly recommend them for any and all landscape design, tree removal, pruning...they are great at it all!! Love working with them! **★★★★★ — jhskipper, Aug. 2022** > During my initial interview with LES LEWIS (senior), he went to his truck and pulled out his pruners and showed me why my Hawthorne tree was not pruned correctly and showed me exactly how it needed to be fixed and explained how improper pruning had most likely contributed to it’s current state of disease. Then and there I knew he was the person to take over the pruning on my property. LES ( junior) shares his father’s passion and knowledge for proper pruning and landscape management. They work hard, they work efficiently and they work KNOWLEDGEABLY ( this is sadly lacking in most companies in Fairfield county in my experience). They are on site with their “team” at all times and their staff have learned proper techniques and have been with them for a long time. They understand what “whole property management” means. They come as a “self -sufficient “ unit with all the tools needed and they take away all debris. I have been working on my property for 28 years in northern Fairfield county and I wish I had known about LES ARBRES at least 15 years ago as my property and I would have been much better off! **★★★★★ — serenaliew, March 2022** > It is always great to work with people who really love what they do. Father and son- The Leses’ and the crew are like artists shaping my trees for the last 8 years. They have showed me that there is a wrong way and a correct way to prune trees and the correct way takes time, patience and maintenance. I highly recommend them because of their skill level and they show up when they say they will. **★★★★★ — Benjamin ., Nov. 2021** > We brought in Les Arbres to perform pruning and removal of overgrown plants on the hillside facing our house. It turned into quite an education about what we had on our property and what we might do with it all. Les and his son, Les Jr., really want their landscaping work to reflect the homeowner, and that begins with a healthy ‘blank canvas’ upon which to work. The landscaping work entailed the removal of dead/dying plants (which were harming surrounding plants) and the pruning of our spruce trees and dogwoods to allow them to breathe and absorb the sun more efficiently. The team also removed invasive species and old stumps, and recommended clearing plant material to expose the beautiful rocks that were hidden beneath. Altogether, three dump trucks of deadwood were carted off to the dump, opening up the hillside and creating a healthy environment for the remaining plants and trees. We always learn so much when we have Les and Les Jr. out to work, and really look forward to continuing to nurture what nature has given us! We strongly recommend Les Arbres for their careful work and kind guidance. We are excited for Spring! **★★★★★ — HU-361693134, Nov. 2021** > We have old and very tall trees that require skill and expertise and we were very fortunate when we found Les Arbres to succeed to our former arborist when he retired. Les Lewis and his son are consummate professionals who bring aesthetics as well as superior expertise and care to tree health care. They have worked for us on a number of projects including planting, tree removal, and thinning our trees that were badly in need thereof, and It has been impressive to see them and their team in action.. The work they have done for us is exceptional **★★★★★ — HU-315780113, Aug. 2021** > Les Arbres has beautifully maintained my trees and shrubs for 30 years. Les Lewis applied his arborist knowledge to salvage > a seaside oak tree which thrives despite the fact that it is growing in very little soil on a shale outcropping. > He also designed and created an intimate koi pond in the shadow of that same oak tree. Finally, he established Nantucket-style > seaside garden which flourishes after many storms and salt-water exposure. > Les' son, Les, has now assumed responsibility for much of the work and management of the crew. They are remarkably artistic and easy to work with. > > Allan Rogers **★★★★★ — Michael Jermyn, Aug. 2021** > The Les Arbres team are true professionals. The work they did pruning an important and challenging tree we wished to preserve on our property that overhangs a portion of our home was done with expert care and success. > We have used less expensive companies to do pruning and removal work in the past, but by far Les Arbres team, while more expensive than other options have proven to be the best choice. > Their obvious commitment to client satisfaction with their work (and clean-up), illustrates that they understand your home is not a "job cite", which is often lost on many service providers. > Our highest recommendation goes to Les Arbres > > Michael **★★★★★ — njgard8, July 2021** > Our trees and bushes were in need of professional care after 8 years of having been maintained by 'one size fits all' landscaping companies. In asking around, Les Arbes was the name that came up as being the best in the business - pricey but expert in their approach. Les Jr came out to take a look and thoroughly explained their process and even offered that we could try them for a day and see what we thought. We ended up extending our trial day to a week and having them tend to the entire property. Les Jr and Sr kept me informed of each day's game plan and made sure I was satisfied before they left for the evening. The entire crew was professional and the property clean when they left. > I imagine our bushes and trees are happy to have been pruned and relieved of all their dead growth. They are now primed for healthy growth in the upcoming seasons! **★★★★★ — jebd, March 2021** > Les Arbes deserves my highest praise and compliments for all of the work they recently completed on my property (twice in the last year.) We have a lot of trees. They are true professionals and masters in the art of tree pruning. I’ve never worked with anyone more knowledgeable about the proper way to prune trees to keep them healthy and beautiful than this father and son team. We take of our trees and had them regularly pruned by reputable companies in the past but were never satisfied with the results. They basically tipped pruned and called it good. These guys operate on a whole other level. They climb and prune with careful thought and precision. After a year of storms and devastating loss of trees on our property they came in restored what remained to perfection. As a result, we had barely a twig fall from any of our trees during periods of high winds this past winter. They know what they’re doing and always consider your opinion and want you to be happy. Their crew is professional, respectful and nice. A pleasure to work with. They arrived on time and left the property spotless. You’d never know they were there. The only evidence was seeing the beautiful structure of my trees that were artfully and properly pruned breathing new life into them. Finally I found someone who knows what they’re doing. Not inexpensive but an investment worth making if you care about preserving trees. Worth every penny. I will never use anyone else! > > Jen D **★★★★★ — Stephanie, March 2021** > If you think you have beautiful trees, wait until Les Arbes works their magic and then you will have works of ART! They truly are artists, not just arborists! They pruned our trees to absolute perfection. **★★★★★ — HU-85789034, Feb. 2021** > Our partnership on projects have blossomed into a long lasting relationship with remarkable results. Les and his crew have extensive knowledge in all aspects of horticulture. As a fellow arborist, this company provides the highest quality services in our industry. **★★★★★ — HU-162064656, Jan. 2021** > Les and his team are bar none, the best around. Highly professional and so easy to work with. If you’re looking for high quality tree care, don’t even risk shopping around. **★★★★★ — DJT, Jan. 2021** > Highly and enthusiastically recommended! Les Arbres was here for the first time this week to prune and cable our tallest trees and to trim and rejuvenate our smaller ornamentals. Wow. We were awed by their passion for their craft, their artistry, and technical expertise. The owners generously shared their knowledge, and everyone treated our property with great care and respect. All was done efficiently and professionally. Our trees look better than ever -- the ornamentals artistically shaped, and the towering trees, silhouetted against the winter sky, have taken on a commanding and regal presence. This company is a joy to work with and a real thrill to watch in action. **★★★★★ — aaburt, Jan. 2021** > We called Les Arbres to come and look at a number of trees on our property. Les and Les (father and son) came and walked the property with us advising what did and, importantly, what didn't need doing and why. They were very knowledgable with a clear focus on helping trees be healthy and at their best. They are very open and were clear from the start about their process and costs. We had a lot of trees to prune, including ornamental pruning and also had a number of large trees removed. Prior to commencing the work Les contacted us to suggest they bring in a tree removal company they partner with on jobs from time to time. We walked through the logistics, costs and the time to complete the work. This was a complex project with several logistical challenges, bringing in their partners to focus on the larger tree removals and having the Les Arbres team diligently working on the pruning was very effective and we are glad they proposed that option. > Les and his team were at all times professional, strong on safety and the welfare of their team, honest, friendly, getting on with it and at the same time checking in appropriately each day and boy they made sure our property was spotless after work was completed at the end of each day. We look forward to working with them again! **★★★★★ — Yan Khamish, Oct. 2020** > Les Arbres are PROs of the highest level. Design, plan and DO! If need that special section of your property or major project these PROs will get it done. I highly recommend this father/son team. **★★★★★ — Lauren Gojkovich, June 2020** > Les and Les are incredible pros (and artists!) at what they do. We were first time homeowners with a lot of specimen trees that needed some love and one major +70’ spruce to take down that was located ~4 feet from the side of our new home. They knew how to zero in on what projects would give us the most “bang for our buck” in terms of aesthetic appeal. They also used the most incredible machinery to safely remove the spruce - it was awe inspiring. What was even better was the ownership Les had for the project - he himself was up in the tippy top of the tree making the cuts because the buck (or massive tree branches!) stopped with him. They also were able to artfully prune our junipers in the house to completely rejuvenate the whole look & feel of the approach to our home. Finally - even though it is not a typical project for them, Les and Les both helped us realize our dream of installing swings in the beech tree in our backyard - they did everything soup to nuts to make it happen - and like the artists they are, the swings were gorgeous custom jobs with our girls’ names carved into them and marine grade rope, etc. It’s no wonder my husband now wears one of his (many - thank you Les!) Les Arbes tee-shirts almost every day. We could not recommend Les Arbes more highly! **★★★★★ — Kevin B, May 2020** > Les and Les Jr were very professional and did a wonderful job on our backyard. They arrived with a small army of men and planted over 20 green giants along the entire back yard in one day. They also planted a special tree in our front yard in remembrance of our son who passed away. Very special and would recommend to anyone! **★★★★★ — Sedef Everest, April 2020** > Having recently purchased a new home in New Canaan with many specimen trees spread among the 4 acre property, I was keenly interested in finding a reputable firm who could do the work required to keep my trees healthy. After completing my due-diligence process the one name that kept coming up in conversation was Les Arbres. I hired Les Arbres to work on my property and couldn’t have been more pleased. An army of workers arrived each morning at 7am to commence with the pruning process led by Les Sr. and Jr. Their attention to detail was superlative and they did a considerable amount of work correcting the poor pruning job that the prior home owner found acceptable. Les’ team worked tirelessly each day and left my property looking beautiful. They are consummate professionals who have a love and passion for their work and it definitely shows. I can’t wait for the trees to blossom. Thank you Les and Les for your hard work. You are true artists. **★★★★★ — Charlotte Matitia, Nov. 2019** > This was my first time working with Les Arbres and I could not be happier with the job they did. They are true artist of tree pruning and despite not having a leaf on them (November), my trees now look incredible and you can really see the difference of a tree pruned correctly. I love my garden and it is hard today to find people that have a true passion for what they do and deliver the high quality of work they promise. Les Arbres is really a family business where skills, attention to detail and professionalism still exists. They came as scheduled, there was no extras from what I was quoted, the employees were all very polite and respectful and left the property clean. **★★★★★ — lolangdon, Sept. 2019** > We hired Les Arbres because our fruit trees were not bearing fruit. After one season of pruning, the trees produced a bumper crop! They also installed a small orchard for us which is not only beautiful but also produced fruit within the first year. Les, his father, and crew were always timely, polite, and conscientious. They always left the worksite tidy and were overall a joy to work with. **★★★★★ — Dianne Wilker, March 2019** > I have worked with Les Lewis for over forty years, and consider him a friend. Les Arbres and their team are responsive, professional, and undaunted by problems. (They once hung a sculpture high in a tree using cabling so complex it was reminiscent of the rigging on the Cutty Sark.) Like most highly skilled workers they are fascinating (sometimes hair-raising) to watch, and now that there are two generations of Lewises I can't foresee ever using another company. **★★★★★ — David Seres, Dec. 2018** > Les Arbres does incredible work. These knowledgeable guys are true artists. They care about their customers and their employees. They are exacting and careful. The work they have done for us has been exceptional. It is a breath of fresh air to have a father and son working in an old-fashioned customer service model. Watching them adjust a 15 foot tree, over and again and by inches to get it sited just right, was quite something, but typical of the care they bring to their work. We have used them several times, and will continue to do so over the years. **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you for the kind review! You guys are a blast to work for! **★★★★★ — Happy Client, Dec. 2018** > Les and son are responsive, professional and do fabulous work. My property always looks terrific under their care. Their pruning is THE BEST!! **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you for the great review! Touching up your property is always a highlight for us! **★★★★★ — HU-7343221, Aug. 2018** > This is just the kind of family business you want to hire. They are very friendly and clearly online what they recommned and will charge. They follow through well, which is sadly rare. The work on many trees was done fast and so clean it was like they weren’t even there. **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you for the great review, we were really happy to be able to help you guys out with the trees on your property! **★★★★★ — Alison Sternberg, July 2018** > Les Arbres Tree Service is hands down the most knowledgeable and professional tree and landscape service in Fairfield County. Along with Les, his crew was a team of experts who carefully pruned our sugar maples and other specimens that needed attention. I would highly recommend them to you! **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you for the kind review! We pass by your house often and your Sugar Maples are looking AWESOME! **★★★★★ — Loren Boston, April 2018** > I strongly recommend Les Arbres, led by Les Lewis III and his son, Les Lewis IV. I have used several tree service firms over the last 20 years, but the Les Arbres team is special. As I said to Les Sr., they are the "Michelangelos" of tree pruning - true artists capable of making your trees look awesome. Hire them. **★★★★★ — Peggy R, March 2018** > Les and Les Jr. did an amazing job pruning our trees that were encroaching our house. Not only did they do an amazing job but are very professional, efficient, and diligent. We will defiantly have them back in the the future! **★★★★★ — Kevin McCarthy, March 2018** > Les Arbres just completed a project removing several large, problematic trees that were in close proximity to our home. Working with Les and Les was a pleasure. Both men, and their entire crew, were professional and courteous from the initial consultation through the final clean-up. They took great care to provide a comprehensive explanation of the work to be performed, and worked diligently to complete the work in a timely manner. I plan to use Les Arbres for future tree care and landscaping work, and I highly recommend them. **★★★★★ — Seventy Acres Landscape Architecture & Design, Jan. 2018** > It is always a pleasure to work with Les Arbres and I highly recommend them for landscape installation, fine gardening, and expert pruning services. Les Arbres specializes in working with discerning clients who appreciate the finest attention to detail in the landscape. Les Lewis and his son Les bring a high level of expertise and a collaborative spirit to every project. **★★★★★ — victoriamorris, Jan. 2018** > Les Arbres has been pruning my trees for more than 20 years. They are thoughtful, talented arborists. Their work is of the highest quality. I would even say that they are artists. In my many years of gardening, and visiting garedens, I have never seen work to equal theirs. **★★★★★ — Denise R, Jan. 2018** > Les Arbres deserves the highest praise. We received a call back within 24 hours after our initial contact and a date was made to walk our property and determine a budget. The project involved trimming kousa dogwoods and cut leaf Japanese maples that had not been trimmed in over 20 years. Each tree was treated as an individual speciman and was trimmed as only a trained arborist could, bringing back the shape of each tree wonderfully! > We look forward to having Les Arbres continue to beautify our once-neglected property!. > Needless to say, we highly recommend them! **★★★★★ — Lois Baylis, Dec. 2017** > We so look forward to our annual visit from Les Lewis and his son Les Lewis Jr. and the talented crew of Les Arbres. They have been with us for at least 15 years and have helped us create and maintain our intricate landscape. They prune our shrubs and trees with an incredible eye for how best to maximize their beauty on our property. Their knowledge of what will work best in certain conditions is invaluable. Their search for the best tree or shrub for that spot and then their attention to detail when planting it is the best! They get high marks all the way around! **★★★★★ — jjshaws, Nov. 2017** > We have used Les Arbres to take care of the trees and shrubs on our four acre property for over 15 years. They always deliver— expert trimming and pruning, superior service, thoughtful and intelligent advice, immaculate cleanup. Most of the important trees and shrubs on our property have remained standing and in good health with Les, his son and their crew at the helm. They are always a welcome sign of spring!I **★★★★★ — Jolley Frank Interiors, LLC, Nov. 2017** > They spent a day cutting down unwanted trees and saplings. The crew was great and they left everything clean. I would definitely use them again! **★★★★★ — K M, Nov. 2017** > Michelangelo's David. The Aegean sea at dawn. Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in g minor. Michelangelo and Mozart -- creative geniuses. The Aegean sea -- a natural beauty. Watching Les Arbres work is like watching the masters work, the creative geniuses. The time, the thoughtfulness and the talent result in a natural beauty that can be appreciated just as well from afar as from up close. I've worked with a lot of people in this field and there is only one Les Arbres. They are a gift to be treasured for years and years. Thank you Les, you are truly the best. **★★★★★ — Rose-Marie S, Nov. 2017** > If you want an artist to create magic in your landscape - give elegant space to your foliage at the same time protect your trees and healthy growth - then Les Arbres is for you. On the business side - Very professional, superior expertise, efficient and so easy to work with. We look forward to continuing annual maintenance with them. 100% satisfied in all areas. **★★★★★ — Sara Schupf, Oct. 2017** > Les Arbres is the best. We only use LesArbres for our specimen trees and the trees that we see everyday. Whether it is their sense of aesthetics or understanding of tree health care, i trust them implicitly. After a Les Arbres visit i just walk around and look at our trees smiling and enjoying the visual effects that Les Arbres is able to accomplish with their expertise and passion. **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you for the detailed and kind review, Sara! Looking forward to coming back for more pruning! **★★★★★ — Pamela F., Oct. 2017** > Les Lewis and Les Lewis, Jr. and their crew have done an absolutely fantastic job of getting our landscaping under control. They are incredibly knowledgeable about how bushes, shrubs, and trees should be cared for and maintained. They evaluated the plantings throughout our property and identified problem areas, gently suggesting several solutions for implementation now and into the future. They each have a practiced eye for design and the quality of their work, and the work of their crew, is absolutely top-notch. Their professionalism and work ethic, combined with truly encyclopedic knowledge and expertise, put them at the top of the long list of landscapers we have dealt with in 34 years of home ownership. Bravo! **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you so much Pam, it's a pleasure to work for you! **★★★★★ — kjtracey6, May 2017** > Les & Les from Les Arbres came to our house to look into maintaining and enhancing our property. We have been delighted with their brilliant work and expertise. The positive compliments we get from neighbors and strangers driving through our community have been gratifying. After working with the company for more than 20 years, it is fun to see Les Lewis' original vision come to fruition as the plantings mature. He is truly a brilliant landscape designer! **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Snow, we love working for you guys and love working on your properties! **★★★★★ — Caroline Brown, March 2017** > Les Arbres is an exceptional landscape design and maintenance company. We really loved installing your new gardens a few years ago and maintaining your property is a pleasure! **★★★★★ — Abbie's Garden & Design, Feb. 2017** > I have worked with Les Arbres since 2004 on a number of projects. They are highly educated with not only plant care but design and installation as well. They come packed with a huge amount of horticultural knowledge for trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials. They have a wonderful crew, a high attention to detail, respect for their clients and have a very artful and natural eye for shrub and tree maintenance. I love working beside them on a number of properties and highly recommend them. **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you Lisa! You rock and working with you is always the best! **★★★★★ — Christer Lundstrom, Feb. 2017** > I have worked with Les Arbres on many projects starting in 2004 through today. They have always been professional while on site, knowledgeable, honest and hard working. I have recommended them to my clients many times for work ranging from general maintenance, garden design and installation, general tree work and fine ornamental pruning. You will not be disappointed with the work this company does at your home. **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thanks for the great review Christer! Wouldn't want to work along side any other Certified Master Arborist! **★★★★★ — Marion Smith, Feb. 2017** > I purchased my first home in July of last year and knew that I wanted my property to be beautiful, natural and easy to care for. I called a few landscape professionals and I must say as soon as Les & Les from Les Arbres showed up (on time I might add) for our initial appointment I was impressed with their professionalism & knowledge. Within a couple of days they had a plant list, a design plan and an estimate. My landscape was pretty non existent and what was here was bland. They put me on their schedule and within a couple of weeks transformed my yard into a work of art. The plants that were here received a face lift, the evergreens they planted along the border gave the backyard the privacy it needed, the perennial garden they planted by the road makes my home more welcoming and the garden by driveway not only has beautiful plants but they also took some large rocks from the property and "planted" them in the garden too! The Les' and their crew were a pleasure to work with and I look forward to working with them again. **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thanks for the kind review, Marion. Working at your house was and still is awesome! **★★★★★ — M. Fager, Feb. 2017** > We hired Les Arbres almost 20 years ago after we moved to our home which had a small hundred year orchard on the property. The trees had been dormant for untold years and through Les's regular pruning and fertilizing the trees came back to life in three years. Les and his team are masterful at pruning the trees, and their knowledge is extensive. They are an absolute pleasure to deal with. **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you so much Mrs. Fager! We love the annual Orchard pruning and taking care of all of your great trees on your property! **★★★★★ — Janet McClutchy, Feb. 2017** > I have engaged Les Arbres Tree &Garden for several projects over the last two to three years. They are extremely professional, reliable and creative in their design work. **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you for the kind review Mrs. McClutchy! We have loved all of our projects on your property and look forward to working with you more in the future! **★★★★★ — Valerie Cohen, Dec. 2016** > Our project this October and November was extensive, encompassing large tree pruning and removal, and hedge shaping and trimming. Les Arbres met with me to understand our goals, which were to enhance the beauty and safety of our landscape. We viewed our trees from every angle and discussed our options. The owners of the company listened well, asked many questions, and made their recommendations. They studied our property after our meeting so they could accurately assess the time and equipment needed. > > In our front yard, we wanted to trim and shape five large trees in time for the fall colors. Our pin oak is now spectacular. Our Norway Spruce trees that form a hedge are lighter and brighter after Les Arbres removed the dead wood and restored their correct shape. The sunlight shines through them now, and they are especially lovely with the recent snow. In addition, they removed several unhealthy, large trees that would eventually fall and block our driveway during a storm. > > All of the employees were respectful, unobtrusive, and worked meticulously with the goal of achieving the best possible results. The owners supervised their employees while working along side them. They consulted with me throughout the project to make sure I was happy with the changes. Each of my family members have commented positively on the improvements. I look forward to working with Les Arbres in the future to maintain our beautiful results. **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thank you very much for such a kind and detailed review of our company, Mrs. Cohen! Working for you was truly a pleasure and we look forward to helping you out anytime in the future! **★★★★★ — User, Dec. 2016** > We recently hired Les Arbres to remove a large tree at the end of our shared driveway. This was a complex project with several logistical challenges, including requiring a crane to complete. Les and his team could not have been more professional and expertly removed the tree ahead of schedule and below the estimated cost. He patiently answered my many questions and made sure our property was spotless after work was completed at the end of each day. We look forward to working with them again! **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thanks for the kind review Lisa! Glad we were able to help you out with the tree removal and look forward to helping you with any more of your tree needs! **★★★★★ — jvebes, Nov. 2016** > Les Arbres has done 3 significant jobs on my property, and each job was done professionally and all of the work was very high quality. Also, some of the work was quite complex and the execution required great skill and care. **★★★★★ — Bill Bruce, Nov. 2016** > Never have I come across such knowledge, passion and artistry. > > Nuanced and hand-crafted, with an aesthetic eye focused on detail and precision. > > Plus, the nicest people you can hope to meet: fair, kind and sincere. **★★★★★ — jay contessa, Nov. 2016** > What a transformation…Thanks to you and your team for your vision and execution of our new plantings. The mission was to replace 25 years of mature trees that we learned were not the right species to hold up to our tough New England weather. The entrance to our home was compromised, but now, WOW what a change. The Sweartia’s were strategically placed to create a natural look up the driveway and the new tree planted near the house made it all come together. Thanks for taking the time to create a masterful vision and plan that was executed flawlessly. **★★★★★ — Mitchell Cole, Nov. 2016** > The work done 11/3-11/10/2016 was of extraordinary quality, punctual, and very professional. It was also very thoughtful about what needed to be done to effect the best result for the trees and for their visual impact. You can waste time, energy and money on other arborists; I have. Les and his team are a clear 6; oops, 5 is the highest rating! **Comment from Les Arbres Tree Service & Fine Gardening:** > Thanks for the awesome review, Mitch! We are really looking forward to seeing you later in the fall! ## Selected projects - [Expansive Park-Like Estate](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/expansive-park-like-estate-pj-vj~5887601) - Location: Darien, CT - Photos: 55 - [17 & 21 Brush Island](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/17-and-21-brush-island-pj-vj~5421928) - Location: Darien, CT - Photos: 42 - [Asian Garden Pruning and Planting](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/asian-garden-pruning-and-planting-pj-vj~2144733) - Location: Darien, CT - Photos: 41 - [Lilac](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lilac-pj-vj~5887639) - Location: Greenwich, CT - Photos: 22 - [Country Fruit Tree Pruning](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/country-fruit-tree-pruning-pj-vj~5887400) - Location: Katonah, NY - Photos: 17 - Description: A wide array of Apple Trees and American Dogwoods which we have guided over the course of many years. He said if everyone did pears like this there would be no problems. He said it has to be repeated every few years. What do you think? A: Interesting the difference between people who “studied” pruning and those who are licensed and have practical, hands on experience. Sure, topping forces mass suckers and regenerative growth but Bradfords are already extremely fast growing and sucker out like crazy. They fill a need because they are inexpensive, fast growing trees which flower and most people who recommend them don’t know the difference between a bad plant and a plant of long term value. Bradfords are so fast growing that their internal cell structure cannot interlock fully (which I’m sure you know from your collegiate studies). The fact that they grow so fast makes them extremely tall and dense and does not fare well with allowing air to flow through the tree or sun penetration (which are essentials for plant health). That weight causes excess “sail” and the tree, as all Bradfords do, fails. Also, topping may be acceptable in a textbook and to those who don’t have a discerning eye, but health wise and aesthetically, it’s terrible. That’s coming from a multi licensed arborist who deals with these plants for a living. **Q: Flowering Tree Suggestion** *(in Trees)* I want to plant a flowering tree and am looking for some suggestions. Something to give some spring color. I'm looking at a Red Dogwood and American Redbud. Any thoughts on those, or maybe something else? I live along the northern coast in South Carolina. Are there any "trash" issues with these? By that I mean - in the fall am I picking up gumballs, pine cones, seed pods, ...? Thanks in advance, CR A: Have you considered a Stewartia? Beautiful trees, branches grow on 45 degree angles and have beautiful flowers in late spring/early summer. Also, an attractive future all year is the bark. **Q: New Boxwood Pruning** *(in Design Dilemma)* I installed three Green Mountain boxwood plants a few weeks ago and would like to know whether they should be pruned at all in their first year getting established? If so, how much should these be taken back and any tips/techniques would help. Thanks so much! A: I agree with the light pruning, it is very important to let the boxwoods establish. When you do get to pruning avoid using shears of any kind, the best pruning is with handsnips. It takes more time but allows for a better look for the plants and allows for better health for the plants. Make sure to deadwood the boxwoods seasonally and clean up leaves from under the plants as often as needed (boxwoods drop their leaves two times per growing season) The link below shows what hand pruning looks like: **Q: can I prune a quercus robur (english oak) without killing it** *(in Design Dilemma)* We have a large oak which needs to be pruned or removed A: You can absolutely prune it. Begin by filling out all deadwood and then work select suckers and onto crossing branches and prune for structure. Be sure not to take too much and 'lion tail' your branches. **Q: Pruning Fruit Trees** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'd love to see an article that describes the best practices for pruning fruit trees. It would provide an assortment of fruit trees and describe when is the best time to prune them, how to prune them and when to fertilize them. :-) A: Take at our apple orchard pruning, if it's up your ally we are happy to give advice and tips! **Q: Pruning hornbeams** *(in Photo Questions)* How difficult do you think it would be to keep these hornbeams trimmed to a somewhat shorter height? Do you think it's feasible? Also, how long do they remain bare in the winter? A: It is important when pruning to maintain a 'cant'. Simply put, you want the top to be pruned slightly inward (not apparent to the eye) so that light can penetrate the trees from top to bottom and also so the trees don't become top heavy. --- *Source: Houzz professional profile.
