The kitchen is basic and we want to update it. We'll be keeping the lower cabinets, and have more than enough storage, this is to add some interest to the walls and perhaps better storage for dishes. We're changing the counter tops as the custom wood is uneven and hard to food prep on. Some sort of light coloured quartz or ceasarstone. We want to install wall cabinets and shelves - on a practical note, not too many open shelves as this is a weekend house in the country and will fill up with cobwebs too quickly! Thinking a combo of Ikea, maybe even painted out to replace my orange accent wall ( which I love but not married to). Any thoughts or suggestions? And yes, I think the white fridge should go but it works. Thank you! A: Love projects like these. Old churches inherently have a LOT to offer. Good on you! Suggest maximizing your lower cabinets with pullout shelves to get more function out of them, and allow for a more open space with minimal wall cabinets. A traditional stone countertop would work well, if you’re trying to keep the old charm. **Q: Professional Advice Regarding Kitchen Island** *(in Polls)* We will have a 10'6" x 5'10" kitchen island. can we manage to seat 6 people on the 10'6" side? We do have the option to open up a side to have a over hang as well for additional seating but prefer not to do this. Please share your professional advice. A: Starting with finishes is common for homeowners, it's the one thing they can see and even touch, at a retail store. Function however is where it all begins. It serves as the framework upon which to hang almost any look you're after. Get that sorted out first, and you'll find that most decisions will become obvious and generally get easier with that behind you. Kitchens are a big investment and NOT the place to be guessing. Unlike painting a room, if you get it wrong, it will remind you for many years to come. Hire a design pro early and you'll thank yourself for years. They'll provide you with experienced advice and 3D renderings to help put you in the space, before you start spending real money. **Q: How can a lift this small accommodate a wheelchair?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: It depends on both the wheelchair and lift sizes. This lift is by Stiltz, refer to www.stiltzlifts.com for specs on various lifts. **Q: Kitchen cabinet instal: what to do with base board?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I plan to install already assembled kitchen cabinets on this wall, see pictures. The height of wall is 87 inch and height of cabinets is 80 inch, the crown molding is 4 inch high... Shall I keep the baseboard as-is OR do i need to remove ? What I am planning is: \- Keep the baseboard as it is. \- Add adjustable cabinet legs about 4.25 inch high. \- Mount the cabinets to the wall \- Add Toe kick to the cabinet legs... Will this work? A: Best to remove and cut to fit toe kick after cabinet is installed. Your other option is to cope toe kick to match baseboard - much more difficult. Score the line where the baseboard meets the wall with a sharp knife to avoid damaging the painted wall when you remove the baseboard. Start at the end that will be covered by the cabinet and work toward the exposed end. You'll understand why, once you start. **Q: Kitchen help - upper cabinet sizes - how high is too high?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'm working on designing my kitchen -- I work for a millwork company who will be making and installing my kitchen for me (lucky, I know!). Everything will be custom and to my specs. My questions is about upper cabinets. I want them to all be at the same height, as a strong design element in a horizontal line, so they have to be at 30" above the countertops to account for the required height above the stove. I would like them to be deeper than standard 12" -- I'm thinking 400mm (15.75"). My husband and I are both pretty tall (5'8" and 6'1"). Is this too deep? Too high? Anyone have cabinets sized and/or located like this and can give me pros and cons? When you're designing everything you second-guess all the decisions! HELP! A: I'll field the depth Q. There is nothing to prevent you from going deeper, however there are a few considerations: 1\. If it is an inset door, then absolutely you should go deeper than 12" - we typically spec 13" for inset doors to account for face frame & door that consumes ~3/4" vs overlay door. 2\. Deeper allows for larger items, but do you really want these in a wall cabinet? Typically heavier is safer in base cabs. 3\. Overhang creates a head banger and visual shadowing. For a tall person trying to work at the counter, your sight line will be blocked more than a 12", your head will contact the wall cabinet sooner, and you will create a darker counter surface due to increased shadow. 12" depth is not set in stone, but was arrived at thru millions of kitchens before you, so be cautious about your innovative desires causing you to venture too far off. **Q: Small Island with small Peninsula or Huge Island Kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)* These are 2 of my most recent ideas for my kitchen ( I've discarded a lot of ideas already) for our retirement home. The first has a big island (the yellow box is floor to ceiling pantry). The second a smaller island with a small peninsula with seating adjacent to the living room. I was leaning towards the big island plan and then had yet another "what if" moment. The kitchen is in the front of the house. I've put the range in the island because in my current house I find myself wishing I could see the TV while I'm cooking. I had a downdraft vent in my last house and while not ideal, I do NOT want a giant hood over the island. The house is post frame construction. The black squares you see in the exterior walls CANNOT be moved, those are the posts but windows can be shifted between them. (even the front door) (these are NOT the engineered drawings that will exist so don't anyone start worrying about post size, it's just representative of the locations.) I'm open to any and all suggestions (assuming I can get DH to agree) except swapping the living room and kitchen as the view is in the back. I've included the floor plan showing the adjacent living room and the canning/pantry/freezer room with the door to the back yard, and bits of the bedroom side. Because I know someone is going to ask what's on the other side of that wall. Interior walls can be moved, added. removed etc as the floor plan is completely open (which has made it harder to figure out). Ceilings will be 10 feet high. Okay everyone, do your worst! unless you think I've already nailed it (HA, HA). A: Appreciate the work you've started, but please listen to the common advice that is being offered. Suggest that if you aren't prepared to hire a pro, park the design activity and learn some basic principles of kitchen layout. You have a big area to work with, and few limitations.... ripe for careless design. A big kitchen with a weak layout spells years of disappoint for any age, and especially for your family situation and plans to age in place. Investing in learning enough about Universal Design to ask quality questions will yield you quality feedback.
