> Molly McCabe of McCabe By Design is an experienced professional in the design and build of bath and kitchen remodels. She works to understand the needs of the homeowner while knowing the needs of the construction contractor through her years of experience as a builder.
> Our experience with Molly was designing a complete remodel of a small ensuite bathroom in our 1970's home. Both her use of space in our small footprint, and use of eco-friendly materials was very well done. We also enjoyed very much her working personality, it meshed well with us!

> We had a great experience working with Molly McCabe of McCabe By Design on our kitchen design. She brought both creativity and professionalism to the project, delivering a beautiful and functional space that exceeded our expectations. What really stood out was her availability for troubleshooting throughout the process—she was responsive, patient, and always willing to provide guidance when unexpected questions or issues came up. Her support made the renovation process much smoother and less stressful. Molly was collaborative and respectful of our ideas, working within our budget. Her specification of the work for contractors allowed us to compare bids easily and for the installation to run smoothly.
>
> We would absolutely recommend Molly to anyone looking for thoughtful, high-quality kitchen design with strong follow-through and client care.

> I recently had a full kitchen remodel and a small ADU kitchen done, and I can't say enough good things about Molly and McCabe By Design. From the start, she respected my ideas and took the time to understand what we wanted in both spaces. It felt like a true collaboration rather than just her pushing her own vision, and now I have my dream kitchen that is very functional!
>
> Her product knowledge really stood out, she helped me choose the perfect appliances that fit the space and we stayed on budget, which was huge! It was clear she genuinely wanted me to be happy with the choices we made.
>
> Attention to detail was another big plus. During the whole process, she made sure every element was just right, from the layout to the finishes. You could tell she has a real passion for what she does and she is good at it.
>
> Overall, I’m thrilled with the outcome of my kitchen! If you’re considering a remodel, I highly recommend working with Molly and McCabe By Design.

**★★★★★ — Paul Lundy, June 2025**

> This is our second remodel using Molly McCabe of McCabe by Design. After our Master bedroom and bath remodel, we were so enthralled we asked Molly to help with our kitchen.
>
> What a delightful and jam-packed information overload it is to completely re-design a functional cooking and entertaining area. Molly walked and waltzed us through the selection of space, materials and appliances. You really do not appreciate all that goes into a kitchen until Molly does her magic. Well, really not magic, just Molly and her team heralding all the details, getting them into a form that a contractor can use.
>
> And then supporting us through the whole process. Suffice to say, this kitchen is WOW. Functional and beautiful as well. Thank you, Molly.

> We knew for a very long time that we needed to remodel our downstairs and Molly was the perfect fit for helping us plan a design that would work for us. Molly took the time to understand our goals and lifestyle and incorporated as much as possible to achieve these goals. We have lived in our house for almost 20 years, and it was definitely time to update the original kitchen and living areas. The results have been such an improvement in both functionality and livability. Taking most of our downstairs down to stud and all new flooring was a big endeavor. Molly's experience as both a designer and builder are reflected in her depth of knowledge, especially in kitchen and lighting, that we drew upon to ensure our remodel would last a long time and suit our needs. We look forward to working with McCabe By Design in the future!

> We hired Molly McCabe from McCabe by Design for a complete kitchen remodel. Her excellent reputation was a factor in selecting her as our designer and she did not disappoint us. Molly’s unique experience in both general contracting and interior design and her attention to detail enabled her to space plan and bring our kitchen from ordinary and outdated into a more functional and beautiful final design. She worked closely with us to understand our needs and communicated with us regularly throughout the project. Her creativity and expertise were invaluable throughout the process, including providing assistance with selection of products like lighting and tile. We highly recommend Molly to anyone looking to elevate their home!

> Molly McCabe of McCabe by Design, designed our kitchen which required a complete remodel down to the studs. Working with Molly is working with a master professional in kitchen design. Due to the fact that she used to work as a general contractor, she has a practical approach to design, ensuring that our kitchen turned out not only beautifully but improved its functionality ten-fold. Two specific experiences with Molly are worth highlighting: the day she took us to multiple design showrooms to help us make decisions and the day she took careful measurements in our old kitchen. The showroom day would have been super overwhelming without Molly’s expert guidance. Her measurements were precise and detailed enabling our contractor to install our new kitchen efficiently and accurately. We highly recommend working with Molly McCabe on your next remodeling project.

> We hired Molly to design and oversee a remodel of our kitchen, laundry room and master bathroom. We had this house built 30 years ago so an update was due. Other than knowing we would have to work within the existing footprint for all three, we didn't have a lot of preconceived notions. Molly thoroughly walked us through the design and decision process and gently guided us past any bad decisions we might make. She is keenly focused on design that will allow one to gracefully and safely live in the space as we grow older. We are very happy with the completed project, we have more storage, better lighting, much nicer finishes and usability than we had previously all in the exact same space. Guests have been very impressed with the transformation. Whether we will remain here for five years or twenty-five we feel we can do so comfortably and safely and that's a great feeling.

> A couple of years ago when we started talking about doing a remodel, discussing it with my partner, I suggested talking to Molly. I’d heard her give a presentation and was so impressed that we decided to reach out to her. Our first criteria was to have both a designer and contractor; someone who would oversee the entire operation as we had neither the experience or desire to tackle that on our own.
>
> Molly had given us referrals who all gave her a glowing report: on budget, on time and leaving them with a house they loved. The pandemic had added some wrinkles to the plan as the supply chain and fewer skilled workers created some delays. That said, Molly made it happen; on time and on budget and also leaving us with a wonderful home we’re now enjoying.

> I had the pleasure of doing a kitchen remodel with Molly McCabe and am very pleased with the results.
>
> When I bought my house in 2021, I knew the kitchen would need a major update. It was dilapidated, dark and dysfunctional. I hired Molly to do a brief design consultation. She agreed with my assessment of the space and listened carefully as I explained what I was hoping to do. She made several excellent suggestions which were later incorporated into the design. I was impressed with her depth of experience and design sensibility.
>
> After talking with other local designers and contractors, I chose Molly to do the design for my new kitchen. I found her easy to work with and the process felt like a true collaboration. She addressed all my must have features and most everything on my wish list. When executed, the design fit exactly into the modest space (14 feet by 14 feet), provided ample storage, improved workflow and efficiency, was well lit, and was beautiful to look at. And to top it all off, the design work came in under budget.
>
> I recommend McCabe by Design without hesitation. Molly knows her stuff and produces superb results.

**★★★★★ — Chris Demarest, Nov. 2023**

> After hearing a presentation by Molly McCabe (AKTW), a few years ago, when it came to considering our own remodel there was no question who to hire. Known for coming in on or below budget Molly met that criteria. It's clear she knows her stuff and for those who think it's easy handling not only different tradespeople, but personalities, particularly being in a 'man's world', she ran a tight but fair ship and all the workers I talked to privately expressed their admiration for her work.
>
> As I sit here and look at all the details in one part of our now open concept downstairs, it's a package that all works: placement of windows, lighting, etc as well as choices of trim. doors, etc. And though ultimately all the choices were ours, she nudged us in areas to find the most practical and aesthetically pleasing elements. I can honestly say, each morning when we enter this space, it's a beautiful sanctuary.

> We worked with Molly McCabe of McCabe By Design (formerly a Kitchen that Works) on our kitchen and dining room remodel. It was a complete transformation – all new cabinets, flooring, appliances, fixtures, and trims. The design process was enjoyable, and she factored in our needs/wants and added suggestions to improve the project that we would never have thought of on our own. She provided guidance on selecting materials that was thoughtful and in-line with our style. Molly was mindful of our budget throughout the process and was skilled at making some minor changes to the design that didn’t affect, and sometimes improved, the overall look of the project, while saving some money. Communication was excellent – throughout the entire project, we were kept updated on timelines and knew what to expect from contractors at each phase. We are extremely happy with our new kitchen and dining room and would highly recommend McCabe by Design.

**★★★★★ — bdudek, Dec. 2022**

> We used A Kitchen That Works for a whole house remodel. Molly was able to guide us in a systematic and organized way, especially with selecting the myriad appliances, fixtures, tiles etc, that can be quite overwhelming. Additionally, this was executed during the height of Covid, with all of the resulting supply chain issues, including some items that were discontinued or not available. Throughout it all, Molly and Clive were open and communicative and managed our expectations with patience and grace. She worked diligently to handle all of the complexities and with the highest ethical standards. We have recently moved back in and are thrilled to be living in such a “dream” space. We would use them again for future projects.

**Comment from McCabe By Design LLC:**

> Thank you Bethany! We are so pleased that you are enjoying your 'new home'!

**★★★★★ — katdlock, Dec. 2022**

> When we bought our house in 2020, we knew one of the first big projects we wanted to take on was a kitchen remodel. The kitchen was dated, small, and hidden behind walls. Absolutely no fun to cook in. A google search brought us to A Kitchen That Works, and Molly. After an extended phone consultation, and then an in-person meeting. The decision to work with Molly was an easy one. She was very knowledgable, and easy to talk to.
>
> We completed the initial design and planning stages in the Winter of 2021. Expectations and schedule were set from the get-go. We knew exactly what needed to be done (by us and her) and when. Molly is so in-tune with the industry…when she heard cabinet prices were going to be increased, she let us know immediately, and we were able to jump on ordering before it happened.
>
> Construction began in March of 2022 and was completed in June 2022. We were living in the house during construction (my husband working from home). The job site was left tidy each day. Molly has a great collection of sub contractors she works with, each one equally knowledgeable and as impeccable as her. And trust me, the poor electricians were really put to the test at our house!
>
> We only had a few small delays, neither of which were Molly’s fault (a pandemic can definitely make things difficult). But, communication was clear, and we always knew what and why something was (or wasn’t) occurring.
>
> I would absolutely work with Molly again and recommend her to anyone. She is not only an amazing designer and general contractor, but an all around good person. I will not hesitate to call her for our next remodel project. Her and Clive are now on our Holiday card list, whether they like it or not!

**★★★★★ — C Mason, Dec. 2021**

> Our new-to-us home (built in 1973) required extensive renovation to make it suit not only our current needs, but also those of our future aging selves. We discovered Molly and Clive (A Kitchen That Works LLC) on Houzz. Hiring them to shepherd our remodel has turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Molly’s design expertise, especially in kitchens, baths, and aging-in-place, was absolutely tailor-made for this project.
>
> When you contract with Molly and Clive to head up your renovation, not only do you receive their incredible attention to detail, organizational/budgetary/problem-solving skills, ability to listen, caring, honesty, and just plain good sense, but you also get an amazing crew of professional subcontractors and craftspeople. This is no small thing. The very best craftspeople can afford to be particular about who they work with and that they choose Molly and Clive speaks volumes.
>
> Even though we weren’t living in the house during the remodel, Molly always ensured the property was kept as neat as possible at the end of each work day. And because we weren’t living there, she or Clive came by to water the temporarily relocated landscape shrubs and plants.
>
> Because of our own direction to increase the scope of work, followed the pandemic hit, the project schedule and budget expanded somewhat. I can’t emphasize enough how NONE of that was Molly and Clive’s fault, they kept trying to keep us informed how our desire to increase the scope of work was doing correspondingly to the budget. That being said, we still received the very best and highest value for the money spent.
>
> Bottom line: if you don’t change the scope of work, (and no natural disaster suddenly hits), the schedule and budget that Molly and Clive create will be just right.
>
> You can’t go wrong hiring A Kitchen That Works LLC to do your renovation. Not only do you get a talented and gifted designer but also the most thoughtful and highest quality general contractor in Kitsap County.

> Molly and Clive led a complete overhaul of our aging waterfront home and transformed it into a modern, dream home that perfectly suits our family. They deftly handled the inevitable surprises that come with an extensive remodel and assembled an excellent design/build team of subcontractors, craftspeople and an architect who all made our vision a reality. We couldn't be happier with the process or the end result. We just filled our home with friends for Thanksgiving, and it was such a pleasure to entertain in this elegant space. We feel grateful to Molly and Clive for that!

**Comment from McCabe By Design LLC:**

> Thank you! It gives us great pleasure to know that you are enjoying your home and that it is being used to it's full potential!

**★★★★★ — HU-361891289, Nov. 2021**

> Molly & Clive are the real deal. They went above and beyond for us during the challenge of the pandemic to deliver a design we love with utmost care, good value, professionalism and down-right fun. They became friends and family as we worked so closely with them and we cannot thank them or recommend them highly enough. Just awesome!!!

**★★★★★ — HU-20707222, Oct. 2020**

> We’ve worked with Molly and Clive twice now and they’ve completed two kitchen renovations for us. First, they helped us build a small but fully functioning kitchen in the basement of our home. What they’ve done is really impressive given that the space was not meant for a kitchen. It required electrical, plumbing and ventilation work to be done from the ground up. In addition to that, Molly designed a custom layout that fully met our needs. The result is a wonderful and functional space that even won an award in one of the local magazines.
>
> About a year later we embarked on a full remodel of our main kitchen. All cabinets and appliances were removed, and a completely new kitchen was put in. The layout was changed, the appliances were relocated, and the new kitchen is a world apart from what we had when we originally purchased the house. It’s a beautiful, stylish, spacious and very functional space that’s a pleasure to be in. It’s a gorgeous kitchen that truly “works”!
>
> Thank you, Molly and Clive, for all your help and guidance. We couldn’t have done it without you!

> I moved to Bainbridge Island in 2013, and went looking to buy a house 6 months later with the idea of getting a great kitchen. Well, I did buy a house, but the kitchen was anything but great. However, the price of the house gave me enough room to renovate the kitchen when the time came, and it finally did in 2018. I found Molly and Clive as the result of a recommendation by a fellow Islander on Facebook, and I was immediately impressed. At the initial consultation, Molly gave me a questionnaire to fill out. It contained what I thought were very thoughtful questions that would help guide us to selecting the materials and features that would best fit my home and my style of cooking. Although I had to postpone twice, we finally got the project done in fall 2019, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Molly controlled all aspects, leaving me nothing to do except stand back and watch it take shape. After 3 months, my awful, dark, hole of a kitchen with 1990’s appliances was transformed into a gem, with beautiful cabinetry and what feels like miles of counter space by comparison. And did I mention how easy they are to work with? I felt like a partner, not just a client, and I had complete confidence knowing that when something went wrong – and it did! – Molly would find the best solution. Hats off, as well, to the wonderful craftspeople who work with her. So thank you, Molly and Clive, for helping me to realize my kitchen dream, and for becoming friends too!

> From our first meeting to job completion, everything received from Molly and Clive of A Kitchen That Works was of the highest quality. The guidance received was immeasurable and exceeded our expectations. We are more than pleased with what we received as a finished product. Money well spent for a quality job.
> We got a schedule and everything went pretty smooth. It was great knowing when things were going to happen because we were living 22 miles away. Although the scope of the job increased as we went along, everything was completed in a timely manner.
> One aspect that impressed us was the way everyone treated our property. Things were kept clean and tidy as work was going on and we didn’t have a month of cleanup to do after the job was done. There were some very important things regarding the power and water install that were done exactly as wanted. They were also very careful with our landscaping.
> One of the biggest things was we did not have to worry about any issues. Molly took care of everything. Molly was on top of materials and subcontractors making sure things were going as planned. The materials were top notch and the workmanship outstanding. There were things brought to our attention we never thought of, such as aging in place. As the saying goes, “You get what you pay for.” This house is going to outlast us.
> If you are searching for a contractor to remodel your home, we highly recommend A Kitchen That Works.

> We hired Molly and Clive for a substantial kitchen remodel. It was completed on-time and with-in budget. They were responsive, always available, pro-active and problem solvers. Their deep experience was invaluable in parsing out what would work and what would not in design and materials. They have good relationships with all subcontractors and have clear expectations of quality of workmanship and timeliness in project completion. In short, we have asked them to tackle several more remodel projects and would recommend them to any of our friends.

> We contracted with A Kitchen That Works to completely renovate our dated (late 80s) kitchen. Molly McCabe and Clive Pardy did a spectacular job with the project and we couldn’t be happier.
>
> Molly is a truly gifted designer, both creative and practical. Extremely well-versed in current design trends, she recommended features we were unaware of, and all her suggestions proved to be functional and beautiful. The whole design and construction process was a collaborative process. Molly and Clive took time to listen our ideas and work them into the project. They fully embraced the understanding that ultimately it would be our kitchen.
>
> We were particularly impressed with Molly’s outstanding organizational and managerial skills. Throughout the process, Molly kept us totally informed or the project’s progress. When problems arose, as they inevitably do on big projects, Molly and Clive communicated with us immediately, honestly detailing the issues and offering their recommendations for the way ahead. Ultimately, our project came in on time.
>
> A Kitchen That Works is not the cheapest kitchen and bath contractor in Kitsap County, but you get what you pay for, and the value is evident in the quality product they deliver. They are worth every penny we spent.
>
> A Kitchen That Works is an outstanding company. Their design and project management skills are superb, and the results are spectacular. We couldn’t be happier with their work and the product they delivered. We will most definitely work with them again.
>
> Choose A Kitchen That Works. You won’t be disappointed.

> As first time homeowners we were looking for a designer which was not only thoughtful and patient, but also one that was talented with a design eye that matched our aesthetics. Molly and the rest of the AKTW crew were able to assist us through our remodeling journey. She was able to help us with little design touches and considerations that we wouldn't have even thought of on our own.
>
> I would highly recommend her for any homeowner looking to consider remodeling their home.

> We’ve lived in the same house for over thirty years and always loved our kitchen…and after working with Molly and Clive on a remodel…we love it even more! They guided us through all phases of a remodel of our kitchen, pantry and master bath. We appreciated their clear and timely communication as well as their knowledge and skills to manage all aspects of the work. They mapped out the project in a timely way and we knew exactly what to expect along the way. The project was completed on time and within our budget. We enjoyed working with their outstanding group of contractors that were always professional and respectful.
>
> Working with both Molly and Clive was a pleasure as they listened to our ideas and provided the ‘one stop shopping’ that made the entire process low stress…and resulted in a lovely new kitchen that we are all enjoying.

**★★★★★ — Donald Burger, Aug. 2017**

> We needed to update our home and make it ADA compliant for some unique and previously unforseen issues. Molly and Clive listened to our concerns and not only made our home safer, but totally revitalized the look and utility our master bath, kitchen and family room. They managed all the sub-contractors and if and when things varied from the posted timeline, they insured that we were "in the loop," and kept us up to speed on the progess of each job. Whenever we had questions or concerns, we were able to contact them at any time, and always got a quick response. We would gladly work with them in the future.

> Working with Molly and Clive of A Kitchen That Works was truly a great experience! After watching numerous network renovation shows, my wife and I were ready to dive into the remodel of our master bathroom and guest bathroom. With this being our first remodel project, we wanted to make sure it was done correctly with three things in mind – utilized quality products and workmanship, functional and efficient use of space, and incorporated our vision and personality.
>
> First and foremost, the bathrooms were in much need of a fresh update and we wanted a design that matched our personality and needs. Molly made the process stress-free and provided direction to our project. She broke the process down to initial consultation, design, material selection, demolition, construction, and follow up. Throughout the renovation, she gave us ideas that made us excited to complete the project while also keeping us grounded. She was very good at helping us to stay within budget without sacrificing the quality we wanted for our own enjoyment and resale value. With any project of this nature, the inevitable “additions” were met with patience and accommodation. My wife and I worried about the possibility of damage during the renovation. However, the work areas around the project were a priority for A Kitchen That Works. From our wood floors to our stairway banister, Molly and Clive ensured these areas were safely protected.
>
> The subcontractors utilized by A Kitchen That Works were all professional and provided quality workmanship. They showed up at the worksite on time and kept as much debris contained as possible. This was essential as both my wife and I still lived in the home during the renovation process. Whenever a problem arose, Molly pounced on it like it was her own home. Capturing our vision, we now have a master bathroom and guest bathroom which we are truly proud to own and are delighted to use. They fit both our style and needs perfectly. I do a lot of traveling and now come home to a bathroom that I cannot wait to use.

> Molly and Clive were easy to work with and had excellent ideas on how to remodel our master bathroom. Very organized, detail oriented and willing to spend the time with us to make our vision come to life. Also hired excellent subcontractors and worked diligently with them to solve the inevitable "surprises" that come with a remodel project.

> Molly and Clive of AKTW are an incredibly talented design-build team. Our project expanded our tiny kitchen and master suite, remodeled our guest bathroom and replaced our failing deck and septic system. The project also resolved longstanding issues with drainage, plumbing and ducting throughout the house. This was a large and challenging project.
>
> Molly’s sense of design is impeccable. She really listened to our desires and presented various options to consider for the layout of our rooms. She sent us on excursions to look at tile and other finishes and provided feedback to ensure everything worked well together. Molly beautifully combined form and function to transform our home far beyond what we could have imagined.
>
> Clive provided the leadership and muscle behind the construction (in addition to making some great suggestions for the design). He oversaw an awesome group of subcontractors, who displayed his core values of quality, craftsmanship, creativity, attention to detail, timeliness and tidiness. This doesn’t happen by accident! Both Clive and Molly stepped in to perform construction and oversight tasks as needed to keep the project on track. We always felt they had our best interest in mind.
>
> The result is a gorgeous and extremely livable home filled with tons of storage space and light. The improvements have dramatically enhanced our lifestyle and we could not be more pleased!!

> We live in a rambler that was built in 1972. The kitchen had been updated and the garage incorporated into the living space in 1990. The cupboards were replaced in the update but the layout remained the same as the original kitchen, galley style. It was very small and not very efficient. The original bathroom had not been updated. In the remodel, we asked Molly to change the layout of our kitchen to open it up to the dining and living room as well as update our bathroom.
> In the design phase, Molly was very good at listening to our ideas and desires, helping us develop a budget and choosing materials that made us happy. The thing I appreciated most about her was that she was very up front and knowledgeable in helping us to understand what would and would not work in our design and materials due to the current condition of our home and our budget.
> As for the actual project, we were very impressed by the professionalism and work of our contractor (A Kitchen That Works LLC) and the subcontractors. Everyone was very respectful of our home. Throughout the project, Molly and her crew helped us through the remodel as well as the changes that needed to be done to keep our home up to code and in compliance with current regulations.
> Overall, we are extremely proud and happy with our new spaces, both the kitchen and bathroom. We would not hesitate to recommend A Kitchen That Works LLC. It was a very positive experience.

> We live in an older home with a mid-century Japanese flavor. We wanted to retain the ambience but remodel from the walls in. From the beginning Molly McCabe listened to what we wanted and had us visit showrooms with products we loved. Because we chose a cook top with a venting system which was not yet available, our project was postponed twice. But Molly didn't give up on us. Our new kitchen, with cork flooring, bamboo cabinets and green granite counter tops is amazing. But most of all, what was amazing was Molly's attention to all, I do mean all, the details. The contractor's she used were top notch and followed her plans exactly. There is nothing that I can think of that is missing or incomplete. And there are many finishing touches that I could never even have thought to ask for that just came with the package.

**Comment from McCabe By Design LLC:**

> We are ecstatic about the job Molly McCabe and her team at AKTW did for us in our kitchen. At 40-years old it was ugly and dysfunctional. It is now warm & soothing, drop-dead gorgeous and TOTALLY functional. Almost every day, one of us still says, "Didn't Molly have a good idea about \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_? Isn't it just perfect now?" We discovered Molly on Houzz and had a nice surprise when we walked into a presentation she was giving at a local home remodel/builders' show. We have never regretted our decision to choose her for our first-ever major remodeling project.

> We live in a condominium with very strict remodel rules. We needed a detailed written plan and time schedule, and then we had a site visit by the entire condo board before approval of our plan. With the guidance of AKTW, we passed muster easily. More importantly, we ourselves loved the planning procedure and outcome. All subcontractors came on schedule and performed well -- within 2% of the projected budget. We can't think of anything to complain about or regret.

> Molly gave my wife and I wonderful advice on our kitchen remodel. She went over all the design choices available at her kitchen design studio, which helped us visualize what our kitchen might look like. She went into great detail on counter top surfaces, cook tops, cabinet layouts and even hardware such as drawer pullouts. Molly went over all the details in an extremely knowledgeable and non judgmental fashion, which really worked for my wife and I. Our kitchen remodel really benefited from her expertise and I can see her design influences throughout the kitchen, a kitchen that we really love cooking in.

> A Kitchen That Works remodeled 2 bathrooms and a laundry area-all at the same time. Molly was fantastic, she took the time to really understand what we liked and what would be functional in our day to day use of the rooms. Her suggestions were spot on with what we wanted. Molly and Clive were extremely responsive and professional. I can't wait for them to remodel my kitchen next!

> Molly was just great to work with on our complete bathroom gut and rebuild. She listened (and remembered) our key issues for the room and kept us on track. What we liked: Open, clear communication; attention to detail; great control of the project from start to finish so it started on time and finished very close to schedule despite the usual bumps and surprises of remodels that we were largely able to let her deal with; adherence to our budget and project estimates; tidy jobsite and good subcontractors. Quality is seldom a bargain, but we definitely feel like we got a good value and design without reno headaches.

> We moved from the Midwest and purchased a home we loved - except for the kitchen. Knowing we would soon be hosting family and friends for our son's wedding celebration and being unfamiliar with contractors and suppliers in the area, we hired A Kitchen That Works. We decided to keep our existing cabinets but needed new appliances, countertops, tile, and sink. In addition, Molly suggested we reverse the position of some of the appliances to provide a more functional layout. This necessitated some new custom cabinet doors, panels, and valence which do match the existing cherry cabinets perfectly. It is a true joy to watch a remodel come to completion so professionally and beautifully - and in time for the wedding.

> If you read through a few other reviews of A Kitchen That Works, you will begin to see a pattern… attention to detail; meticulous documentation; exemplary work ethic; meeting or exceeding deadlines; wonderful communication; knowledgeable; organized; working tirelessly. We saw all of this in action. And it’s all true. In addition, Molly McCabe’s follow-through was extraordinary. If she said a sub-contractor was going to arrive at a certain time, she made sure it happened. She made sure that every detail (and there were many) was fulfilled to our satisfaction. If our satisfaction was not as exacting as Molly’s, then it was fulfilled to HER satisfaction.

> Molly, and her partner Clive Pardy, worked with us as designer and contractor for an extensive remodel consisting of the kitchen, family room, three bathrooms, laundry room, and master bedroom. All design work and the beginning of the actual construction occurred while we were living overseas. The logistics of having our dreams, wants, and “need-to-haves” become reality from a distance of over 5,000 miles was daunting, but Molly and Clive made it happen in a timely manner, with ideas that were better than what we had ever envisioned, and in meticulous detail. They were working under a deadline, as we needed to move back into our home within two months of returning from overseas. From the onset of the actual construction we were given a detailed and accurate timeline that Clive produced based upon his construction experience. And even though we added significantly to the original contract, exactly two months after we returned to the States we were able to move into our home. It was amazing to see how well Molly and Clive worked together - with Molly working to her strengths of design, organization and follow-through, and Clive with his construction and financial expertise.

> The idea of building or renovating a home can be a scary and stressful experience. When we originally had our home built 24 years ago by another company that certainly was the case. This time, Molly and Clive made sure that our stress was minimized and that the renovation process went as smoothly as possible. Our thanks to Molly and Clive for a job well done!

She even kept my dog company one day while to modifications were being completed.

As a retirement age couple we wanted to include design features and fixtures that would allow us to age in place without appearing institutional. We love our spacious, low threshold shower and the seated vanity! Molly's attention to detail, her meticulous documentation, and willingness to consult with our contractor resulted in a successful partnership and the timely completion of our project. > My wife and I have done a great deal of construction over the years, including remodels, room additions, damage restoration, and building a house from the ground up; we have had some good experiences and some that were not so good. Our experience with A Kitchen That Works was exceptional, from beginning to end. Molly McCabe and Clive Pardy are both knowledgeable and thoroughly professional.
> Molly aided us with the design, pointing out potential problems inherent in, and improvements to our flights of fancy, while never giving us the feeling that -- as has happened in the past -- that we were imposing on the designer's artistic vision.
> At the outset of the job, Molly gave us a calendar showing which sub would be on the job each day, and followed up with a call or an email nightly to advise us what to expect the following day. The work proceeded according to the calendar, and she held the subs to their appointed days. If delays occurred , she worked to tirelessly to get things back on schedule. The job finished somewhat late, but only due to delays caused by a supplier whom we chose.

But that did not stop Molly from providing me extensive, highly useful information -- both in her articles and directly in phone and email. The decisions I would need to make was very intimidating. Molly provided me with practical insights and watch-fors that helped me throughout the project -- from my early design choices, materials considerations through evaluating contractors and working effectively with them. Molly's design guidance was invaluable in helping us to choose the look that pleased us and fit in with the style of our NW Craftsman home. The lighted china cabinet fits a niche in the dining room as if built in. The entertainment center and book shelves also appear built in symmetrically about the stone fireplace. > Kitchen and Bath remodel in a 1960's beach cottage. Molly acted as the designer and contractor. She designed the kitchen and bath basically using the same blueprint, but made the spaces more efficient, provided more storage, and used materials that were easier to clean. She helped with the selection of materials including appliances, cabinets, lighting, hardware, etc. Molly was a stickler for detail, quality of products, communication, and professionalism. She also expected this from all the subcontractors. I love the finished result. It is a joy to be in these 2 new rooms and it has made my entire house feel so much nicer. It was a pleasure working with Molly and the entire team.

> From the very simplest lighting design (Molly turned a clear shade of a light fixture down instead of up and the lighting was dramatically better for that one tiny movement) to larger projects (just short of a complete kitchen remodel), Molly has helped us save time and money (my husband's goal in life). We also had quite a few laughs in the process. Molly laughed with us -- especially when she came to our house for a lighting project and found that one of our main lighting problems in our long, dark hallway was that we had installed bathroom fixtures instead of the proper fixtures and while the design fit our rustic look, the lights let out no light! Trying to save money, we purchased some lights but since they were the wrong lights we replaced them six years later and paid double the price!

> I have turned to Molly for design assistance with my various house projects over the years as I trust her skills, integrity, design sense, practicality and long-term view for creating lasting and workable spaces that create ease and comfort. Most recently I hired Molly to review design plans created by another firm for my house in Dallas, Texas. If she had been in Dallas, she would have been designing for me! With a keen eye and knowledge of the latest materials and trends she provided invaluable assistance in assessing the costs and likely outcome of the proposed changes. A number of years ago she designed the kitchen for my 1940's cottage that had an unimproved kitchen. With its efficient flow and beautifully designed features, the kitchen became the focal point of my house, and ultimately its greatest selling point, literally, since I recently sold my house for asking price, cash, after just several weeks on the market. Although it is difficult to say which of Molly's contributions to a project are the most desirable, probably the most important are her ethics. You can trust Molly implicitly, you will get every penny's worth of her time and judgment, and she will not recommend anything she would not use herself in her own house. I look forward to our next project together. Now, if only she would move to Texas!

  - Description: The primary objective of this project was to create the ability to install a refrigerator sized for a family of six. The original 14 cubic foot capacity refrigerator was much too small for a four-bedroom home. Additional objects included providing wider (safer) isles, more counterspace for food preparation and gathering, and more accessible storage. After installing a beaming above the original refrigerator and dual walk-in pantries (missing despite being in the original building plans), this ar…

  - Description: This home’s humble beginnings started in 1944 as a single-story rectangle on a lot that would become a Seatac Airport runway. Fast forward four years and the house is barged to a low bank waterfront lot. A poorly constructed two-story addition and garage were added in 1973. The house desperately needed a seismic retrofit. The homeowner’s loved the water view but were dissatisfied with the 7’-6” ceilings, awkward kitchen layout and the dark chopped up spaces throughout the house. Their initial re…

  - Description: A waterfront home on acreage with stunning views started as a modest Mid-Century Modern and was expanded (by an owner prior to our client) and made into a Craftsman-esque abode. The South-facing Kitchen addition (disproportionate to the overall size of the home, as well as the home’s entertaining value), with its asymmetrical 3-12 pitch gable roof and vaulted ceiling, appears to have been an afterthought (and definitely not inspected) with poor lighting, no ventilation, inadequate storage, and a…

  - Description: The primary objective of this project was to completely change and reorganize the space for better storage and workflow. This home had an improperly installed down draft system, causing the smoke detector to go off frequently, there was a lack of natural light on the west side of the kitchen and the view to the BBQ deck and garden was obstructed. The kitchen and family room were gutted, all materials were replaced, and two windows were added to the west wall of the kitchen. Additionally, a dou…

  - Description: A custom built home was the cat's meow when it was built but with the passing of three decades, it was time to replace the appliances and update the storage and finishes to reflect how the homeowners live today. McCabe By Design assisted the homeowners in the selection of beautiful, soothing color palette along with all the materials in the project. The kitchen island was reconfigured to include a more ergonomic location for the cooktop with an effective downdraft system, a pet feeding station,…

  - Description: This kitchen space used to be comprised of one and one-half bedrooms and a hall with 7'-6" ceilings in the original house. When the home was slated for a whole house remodel, it was time to give the chief cook the kitchen of her dreams. The kitchen was relocated to the opposite end of the house to facilitate proximity to the deck, BBQ and the open plan living & dining rooms and to create a cost effective plumbing wall for the adjacent laundry room. The vaulted ceiling was carried into the kitche…

  - Description: This project is part of a whole house remodel that embraced accessible design and the premise of living-in-place. The objectives for the primary suite closets were to accommodate an extensive woman’s wardrobe including 40+ pairs of shoes while leaving adequate space for the husband’s more modest wardrobe. Further, all items needed to be accessible. The original closet was eliminated by the relocation of the staircase to the second-floor primary suite. A careful analysis of the homeowners’ needs…

  - Description: This bathroom was designed for two professionals who dedicate themselves to the health and wellness of others. The objective of the project was to be able to practice for themselves, what they preach to their patients. The original 90” x 162” primary bathroom had so many pain points (would you to look at a toilet when taking a relaxing bath?), that it should have been an easy task to meet their needs and desires, but it was anything but due to structural issues with the home. Several design layo…

  - Description: The original kitchen had the feel and functionality of an afterthought. The current homeowners craved accessible storage, layered lighting and multiple work stations so all members of their growing family could spend time together in the kitchen safely. By removing the awkward peninsula and incorporating an island with seating along with a built-in breakfast nook, there is now room for everyone to be in the kitchen together harmoniously.

  - Description: Our client purchased what had been a custom home built in 1973 on a high bank waterfront lot. They did their due diligence with respect to the septic system, well and the existing underground fuel tank but little did they know, they had purchased a house that would fit into the Three Little Pigs Story book. The original idea was to do a thorough cosmetic remodel to bring the home up to date using all high durability/low maintenance materials and provide the homeowners with a flexible floor plan…

Working within the existing footprint, the project objectives were originally viewed as a ‘refresh’ that would include: • Ability to have 2 cooks in the kitchen working efficiently/safely. • Improve the lighting and aesthetic appeal of the kitchen with durable low maintenance products and replace failing appliances. • Improve the layout to maximize overall functionality, ergonomic sto…

  - Description: A beautiful custom home, designed for a bachelor, was unable to accommodate the needs of a married couple who not only lived and parented together but also worked together. To maintain matrimonial harmony, it was time to transform the primary bathroom into a room built for two with two sinks being at the top of the needs list (the original sink and dinky mirror were located between the two exterior windows). Finishes throughout were also ready for an update. The bathroom was gutted which provide…

  - Description: A few years after completing their master bath, the client asked us to return to make their very dysfunctional kitchen...functional. Failing appliances, tile countertops with large grout joints, inadequate lighting/storage and terracotta tile floors made for an unattractive space that was difficult to work in. On the top of the wish list was more functional storage (pull-out pantries, chef's pantry, pop-up mixer, tray divers, pull-out trash, pot and pan drawers, roll-outs and more), more counter…

The shower was moved to the prior location of the vanity which provided more space for the shower, the ability to connect to a steam generator and allows the bather to enjoy a lovely view out of the windows while showering. Storage has been significantly improved as has the lighting.

  - Description: Lack of storage and tired finishes in this 1980’s condo prompted the owner to remodel this frequently used guest bathroom. The bathroom was gutted and updated with a tall storage cabinet that has a right hinged bottom door for easy access to laundry supplies and a left hinged top door for easy access from the bathroom sink. The soothing gray and white color palate make a perfect backdrop for color rich accessories. The tile shower surround and wainscotting adds texture and interest to this land…

## Community Q&A

**Q: where to get lamps** *(in Photo Questions)*

Where are the orange dancer floor lamp and the walking person bedside table lamp from?
Thanks!

A: Try this - https://www.etsy.com/listing/4463031663/modern-wooden-figure-floor-lamp-orange?ls=a&ref=sold\_out\_ad-2&plkey=EusK4U0Oq27zP6etc5wuPg6xby0a%3ALT4f644f081d01729ccb0362e2a868ba2bbc0d0148

**Q: Cabinet color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What paint color is the cabinets??

A: Dear Michelle,
This project is now 13 years old. Regrettably the cabinet manufacturer has discontinued the color, sorry.
Check out Dura Supreme Cabinetry's Evergreen Fog paint finish, it is gorgeous.

**Q: Love the tub!** *(in Photo Questions)*

Which Fleurco tub model is this?

A: My apologies but this project is over 10 years old and we do not hold records after seven years.

**Q: Match to “Electrolux” white?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Do you happen to recall what color cabinet paint was used here? It’s a good match to the Electrolux appliances.

A: Dear Brooklyn-Townhouse,
The cabinets are by Bellmont Cabinet Company, 1900 series, Porto door style in Matte White.
All the best,
Molly McCabe

**Q: Love the door! Where is it from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Trying to update an entryway and looking for unique doors with unusual glass patterns.

A: Dear Andrea,
The door is manufactured by Simpson Door Company. The material is Douglas fir and finish is a clear lacquer. Simpson offers this door in several different species and glass styles.
All the best,

**Q: Can a mini-split heat a whole house?** *(in Photo Questions)*

In most cases, yes. The maximum number of air handlers connected to a single condenser in a mini-split configuration depends on the system itself, but is generally between 5 and 8. This means a single, multi-zone mini-split system can provide comfort to most American homes, with much larger properties perhaps requiring a second outdoor condenser unit.

https://thebestminisplit.com/

A: This master suite is the only space on the second floor of this home. The master bath has electric resistant in floor heat. The home has hydronic heating in 3/4 of first floor and two additional mini splits in the home running off one condenser sized for three heads.
