**Q: I HATE MY NEW BUILDER'S KITCHEN, PLEASE HELP!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My kitchen in our home that is currently being built has a refrigerator on a wall by itself that is placed between 2 doors.  The oversized island, which is pretty basic, is most likely the reason why no cabinets were placed on the wall with the refrigerator.  The attached photos are of a similar kitchen in the same model (my cabinet size and color/stone/cooktop etc. are different but the layout is basically the same).  I was not aware of the poor layout prior to signing the contract.  What can I do to make this kitchen more appealing?  The builder, K.Hovnanian, is not willing to allow changes so my husband and I will have to pay for a fix after the closing.

A: I agree with the comments that the island should be turned outwards towards us.  However, you do have a good space so if you don't want to go to the lengths of moving an island and then fixing your floors you can replace the countertop with one that overhangs on the two sides (fridge side and outward).  This will give you space for more seating around the island and cozy it up a bit.  A beautiful light fixture or pendants will also go a long way.  Also would add a light backsplash to lighten the space.  In addition, a light rail with task lighting as well as uplighting will really brighten the entire kitchen.  The pantry is extremely functional and really takes the pressure off your kitchen and perhaps a door with frosted glass to hide any mess would update the space.  As for your fridge, it does look a little lost right now however you can always have a carpenter do some carpentry work around it to make it look like it's more built in.  Overall you just need to brighten and warm it up.  Good luck!
