WILL THE GRAIN/GLOSS WILL PREVENT THEM FROM MATCHING THE NEW Textured 6-Panel Hollow Core Primed Composite Interior Doors WE ARE INSTALLING? Our house is a traditional style built in 1999. It has genuine oak door trim and floor moulding stained golden/honey oak with an almost high gloss finish. The current style for trimwork here in Colorado is painted white or light cream trimwork. This house needs complete updating (all trimwork is golden oak, the doors are raised 6 panel natural stained smooth grained pine, the hardwood floors are light birch, all door handles are bright brass! ). Also, WHAT FINISH IS MORE CURRENT? Brushed nickel or Venetian bronze or polished chrome door handles? Lastly, any cool ideas for RE-PURPOSING THE OAK DOORS after we remove them? (It is probable we will convert this house to a rental property in 5-6 years) A: Also, Venetian Bronze finish ! We have a dining table for this room(Ashley Hamlyn collection 8 seating), but since we do not have a separate living room we also want to add some kind of custom sofa in remaining area in dining room. Is that a good idea? Please see 2 images. One is the dining room size and layout. other is the expected decor. Normally people would add a server/buffet in the area marked by blue lines, but are we right in trying to add a custom seating arrangement here. what are possible design ideas? The aqua color shows the possible location for bookshelves, with the brown square being a coffee table and the purple shapes being a loveseat and an armchair. **Q: Need ideas to fix this ugly exterior** *(in Design Dilemma)* I don't even know where to begin. This exterior is a train wreck. Enclose the garage? Change the roofline somehow? And the front door area that doesn't relate to the rest of the house at all. What can be done to fix this? Any ideas are truly appreciated! A: Is the lot in a desirable neighborhood? If so, you could level this and build new. If this is a first time home or a flip house, make sure that your renovation budget includes structural repairs and/or enough framing materials and labor to reconfigure the roof and add coherence to the front! **Q: What would the original roof have been in 1904?** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are just starting the renovation plans for this 1904 home in Montana. Will be removing the aluminum siding and go back to wood. Would like to know what the original roof material might have been. It is currently a clay product that is no longer made. Any ideas? If not - what are the options we should consider for the area and design? A: I agree with the metal roof suggestions. How about wood hand rails to replace the pipe on the front steps? Looking forward to seeing what you do with this! **Q: Think I've found my color palette! Do they work together?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I've pulled all the colors (besides blue) from our large moss rock fireplace in the living room. The outside of our house is the rock as well. I know the colors work with the house, but do they work together? I'd either use Nantucket Dune or Manchester Tan as the main color throughout with the others being used more as accents, laundry room, powder room, etc. My goal is to have a very restful house that flows from one area to the other without a lot of upset - which is why some of the colors are very close. Would you eliminate some colors? How many are typically used in a house? Our house is pretty open and you can see a little of most rooms from the main area. A: Great discussion! The comment about buying and trying a lot of samples is good advice. Lighting is crucial to having your colors come off looking as fantastic as you hope. **Q: Help give this bathroom a makeover! What will be saved: \- vanity (Baltic Brown Granite, Maple Vanity with Hazelnut glaze) \- White toilet \- Chrome Fixtures (sink faucet, shower fixture, light fixture) What is going: \- brass shower door \- closet door configuration \- shower liner will be removed and replaced with a standard white tub with skirt. I hope to achieve color and material selections that work well with the vanity and the new round (interior) window. The home is on a lake and I was hoping the window would offer a nautical feel as well as some natural light. The window trim will most likely be painted white, along with the new door casing.
