> It has been a little over a decade since we moved into our custom-built home in the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County. Recently, I felt compelled to return to Berkeley to thank Fu-Tung Cheng personally, and his collaborative team, for their work on our residence. Cheng Design provided meticulous attention to every detail, superb craftsmanship and timeless style.
>
> Without fail, every time that we have guests, they remark favorably upon the design of our house: the subtle color scheme, the bamboo cabinetry, the black granite island and the Cheng concrete counter tops and fireplace.
>
> We are ever so grateful and delighted to have contracted with them.

> Fu-tung Design designed a beautiful house for me. Even after 10 years it still looks fresh and unique. I am a General Contractor and his firm was great to work with.

> Fu Tung Cheng is the most creative and caring designer/ architect I have met or worked with. He cares about each detail and nuance of each tile and piece of flooring and the art of the overall project. He is straight up creative and can design anything on a piece of paper or a napkin. I am honored to work on projects with Cheng Designs and would recommend them to anyone.

## Selected projects

- [Tiburon House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/tiburon-house-pj-vj~5670505)
 - Location: Tiburon, CA
 - Photos: 18
 - Description: Tiburon House is Cheng Design's eighth custom home project. The topography of the site for Bluff House was a rift cut into the hillside, which inspired the design concept of an ascent up a narrow canyon path. Two main wings comprise a “T” floor plan; the first includes a two-story family living wing with office, children’s rooms and baths, and Master bedroom suite. The second wing features the living room, media room, kitchen and dining space that open to a rewarding 180-degree panorama of the S…
- [Lafayette Residence Remodel](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lafayette-residence-remodel-pj-vj~5470886)
 - Location: Lafayette, CA
 - Photos: 17
 - Description: The “bones” of this house were legitimate 50’s modern vintage, but some of the 60’s overlay such as the stonework and the aluminum windows needed acute attention. Removing the stone façade and inserting the thin profile of steel transforms the 50’s look into a contemporary modern feel.
- [House 7- Los Altos Hills](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/house-7-los-altos-hills-pj-vj~4625969)
 - Location: Los Altos Hills, CA
 - Photos: 20
 - Description: HOUSE 7: CONCRETE VILLAGE HOUSE, LOS ALTOS CA House 7 was designed to engage the family in a daily play between their house and the elements. A celadon-colored, sculpted geological wall at the front entry weeps water like a natural rock face. The pleated, butterfly roof feeds rainwater to both a rusted, plate-steel corner drain at the office; and, at the rear, a Cheng-signature “erosion time-lapse wall” is designed to slowly wear over time and reveal sculptural objects placed within concrete wal…
- [House 6 - Menlo Park](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/house-6-menlo-park-pj-vj~464755)
 - Location: Menlo Park, CA
 - Photos: 21
 - Description: House 6, is Cheng Design’s sixth custom home project, was redesigned and constructed from top-to-bottom. The project represents a major career milestone thanks to the unique and innovative use of concrete, as this residence is one of Cheng Design’s first-ever ‘hybrid’ structures, constructed as a combination of wood and concrete.
- [Pebble Beach Retreat](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/pebble-beach-retreat-pj-vj~2514866)
 - Location: Del Monte Forest, CA
 - Photos: 24
 - Description: Emotion and ergonomics shaped the design plan for this weekend retreat home in Pebble Beach, CA. CHENG Design employed brass elements, coffered ceilings and warm woods throughout the home as well as a unified color palette, custom concrete fireplace surrounds, and an island featuring gull-wing cabinet doors to strike a balance between traditional elements and a modern design perspective. The use of natural tones punctuated by eclectic details, like semi-precious stones inlaid in concrete, keep s…
- [San Francisco High-Rise Home](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/san-francisco-high-rise-home-pj-vj~464761)
 - Location: San Francisco, CA
 - Photos: 19
 - Description: Dynamic, updated materials and a new plan transformed a lifeless San Francisco condo into an urban treasure, reminiscent of the client’s beloved weekend retreat also designed by Cheng Design. The simplified layout provides a showcase for the client’s art collection while tiled walls, concrete surfaces, and bamboo cabinets and paneling create personality and warmth. The kitchen features a rouge concrete countertop, a concrete and bamboo elliptical prep island, and a built-in eating area that show…
- [San Francisco Four Seasons Apartment](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/san-francisco-four-seasons-apartment-pj-vj~1269547)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 26
 - Description: Though the client was initially reticent about a “modern” aesthetic, the design approach thoughtfully transformed traditional elements (closed spaces, molding and wallpaper) into reconfigured spaces for flow and function. The home breaks from traditional molding and now uses various woods and textured materials to create tactile surfaces and warm spaces. Examples of moving traditional materials and design into a “comfortable modern” arena are the antique tansu in the kitchen and shoji screens in…
- [Natoma Penthouse - San Francisco](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/natoma-penthouse-san-francisco-pj-vj~488881)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 32
 - Description: The design-build of this 4,000-plus s.f. San Francisco penthouse began with only an architectural shell and focused on creating intimate, human-scale spaces. This loft-like home is a complete study in materials, texture and construction. Beautiful cityscape views. Large open spaces. Unique and surprising details. Simple materials executed with master craftsmanship and artistry create a space that is expansive yet intimate, relaxing and full of warmth.
- [Teance Tea Room](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/teance-tea-room-pj-vj~528891)
 - Location: Berkeley, CA
 - Photos: 8
 - Description: Teance Tea Room, located in Berkeley’s upscale Fourth Street shopping district, is a skylit, transcendent environment of sustainable bamboo cabinetry, raked plaster walls and handmade glazed porcelain tiles. Cheng Design conceptualized this unique space around a 10-ft circular concrete tea-sampling bar. Cast in a single pour and embedded with semi-precious gemstones and fossils, this signature feature invites visitors to sit and sip, enjoying the subtleties of the fine tea, the surface of the ba…
- [House 3 - Del Mar](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/house-3-del-mar-pj-vj~465992)
 - Location: Del Mar, CA
 - Photos: 17
 - Description: Airstream trailers and Quonset huts inspired the design for this house docked against a gentle slope near San Diego. The design pits hard-edged industrial materials — concrete block, galvanized siding, steel columns, stainless steel cable and welded I-beams — against softer residential elements, such as stained-wood siding and a grid of exposed wood framing that supports the roof.
- [Meteor Vineyards Kitchen, Napa Valley, CA](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/meteor-vineyards-kitchen-napa-valley-ca-pj-vj~529179)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 28
 - Description: This kitchen by Cheng Design is located within a massive, 12,000 sq. ft. rammed earth home anchoring a working Napa County, California vineyard. Commissioned to create a sculptural yet functional cooking space expressing art and utility, the design approach was to create a monolith — a unified kitchen space of simple low walls and concrete countertops, seamless cabinetry details and hardware, and a clever orchestration of gourmet appliances to echo the mass of the house and anchor the overwhelmi…
- [House 2 - Mammoth Lakes](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/house-2-mammoth-lakes-pj-vj~488841)
 - Location: Mammoth Lakes, CA
 - Photos: 7
 - Description: The entry way is the focal point of this mountain home, with a pared concrete wall leading you into a "decompression" chamber as foyer - a place to shed your coat and come in from the cold in the filtered light of the stacked-glass skylight. The earthy, contemporary look and feel of the exterior is further played upon once inside the residence, as the open-plan spaces reflect solid, substantial lines. Concrete, flagstone, stainless steel and zinc are warmed with the coupling of maple cabinetry a…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Could you tell me what the wall color is? Very soothing!** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thank you for your interest and inquiry, Christine! It's been awhile since we did this project, but I can tell you it is a "celadon green" inspired color. Benjamin Moore usually does a great job with their color selections, hope this helps!

**Q: What wood species of cabinets** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hello - what is the wood species and finish on the cabinets shown in this picture? Are the doors and drawer fronts solid wood or engineered core with veneer? They are gorgeous!!

A: Hello! Thank you for your interest and inquiry into Cheng Design. To answer: The cabinet wood is quartered unfigured Koa; and, it was a veneer over plywood.

**Q: Lovely chandelier!** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thank you, Design Everest Consulting Engineers! It was made by artist David Ward.
